2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. 3 A voice of one crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.’” the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”
4 John [the] Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 7 And this is what he proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. 15 “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. 16 As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
17 Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
18 Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. At once they left their nets and followed him.
19 He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
20 Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. 21 Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
22 The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. 23 In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,
24 he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”
26 The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27 All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
28 His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
29 On leaving the synagogue he entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30 Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
31 He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32 When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
33 The whole town was gathered at the door. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. The whole town gathered at the door,
34 He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
35 Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
36 Simon and those who were with him pursued him And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, Simon and his companions went to look for him,
37 and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
38 He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”
39 So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
40 A leper came to him [and kneeling down] begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
42 The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
43 Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
44 Then he said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
45 The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere. But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter. Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
