The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”
John was immersing in the wilderness, and preaching the immersion of repentance in order to the remission of sins. John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And all the country of Judea and the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him, and were all immersed by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
And John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a girdle of leather around his loins, and he ate locusts and wild honey: Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
and he preached, saying: There comes after me One mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
I immerse you in water; but he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was immersed by John in the Jordan. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And immediately on coming up from the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
And there was a voice from the heavens: Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I delight. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
And immediately the Spirit compelled him to go forth into the wilderness. The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
And he was there in the wilderness forty days, to be tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him. and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
But after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
and saying: The time has fully come, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe the gospel. and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
And as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew the brother of Simon, throwing a net about in the sea; for they were fishers. Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them: Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
And immediately they left their nets, and followed him. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. At once they left their nets and followed him.
And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship, mending their nets. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
And he immediately called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
And they went into Capernaum; and immediately, on the sabbath, he entered the synagogue, and taught. And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
And they were astonished at his teaching; for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
And there was in their synagogue a man who had an unclean spirit; and he cried out, And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,
saying: Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Nazarene? Hast thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
And Jesus rebuked him, saying: Be silent, and come out of him. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”
And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, and cried with a loud voice, and came out of him. And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
And all were amazed, so that they questioned one another, saying: What means this? What new teaching is this, that with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him? And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
And his fame immediately went abroad into all the surrounding country of Galilee. And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
And forthwith, having gone out of the synagogue, they went into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
Now the mother-in-law of Simon lay sick of a fever. And at once they told him of her. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
And he went to her, and took her by the hand, and raised her up, and the fever left her instantly; and she ministered to them. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
And at evening, when the sun had gone down, they brought to him all that were sick, and those who were possessed with demons. That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
And the whole city came together to the door. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. The whole town gathered at the door,
And he cured many that were sick of various diseases, and cast out many demons, and did not suffer the demons to speak, because they knew him. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
And very early in the morning, while it was yet dark, he arose and went out, and departed to a desert place, and there prayed. And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
And Simon, and those who were with him, followed after him. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, Simon and his companions went to look for him,
And when they had found him, they said to him: All are seeking for thee. and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
And he said to them: Let us go into the neighboring towns, that I may preach there also; for I have come forth for this purpose. And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”
And throughout the whole of Galilee he continued to preach in their synagogues, and to cast out demons. And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
And there came to him a leper, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying to him: If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
And Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched forth his hand, and touched him, and said to him: I will; be clean. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
And when he had spoken, the leprosy immediately departed from him, and he was cleansed. And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
And he strictly charged him, and forthwith sent him away, And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
and said to him: See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
But he went out, and began to proclaim it much, and to publish the matter abroad, so that he was no longer able to enter a city openly, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter. But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter. Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
