כִּי֩ הִנֵּ֨ה הָאָד֜וֹן יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת מֵסִ֤יר מִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וּמִ֣יהוּדָ֔ה מַשְׁעֵ֖ן וּמַשְׁעֵנָ֑ה כֹּ֚ל מִשְׁעַן־ לֶ֔חֶם וְכֹ֖ל מִשְׁעַן־ מָֽיִם׃ | For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; | See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water, |
גִּבּ֖וֹר וְאִ֣ישׁ מִלְחָמָ֑ה שׁוֹפֵ֥ט וְנָבִ֖יא וְקֹסֵ֥ם וְזָקֵֽן׃ | the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, | the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, |
שַׂר־ חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וּנְשׂ֣וּא פָנִ֑ים וְיוֹעֵ֛ץ וַחֲכַ֥ם חֲרָשִׁ֖ים וּנְב֥וֹן לָֽחַשׁ׃ | the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. | the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter. |
וְנָתַתִּ֥י נְעָרִ֖ים שָׂרֵיהֶ֑ם וְתַעֲלוּלִ֖ים יִמְשְׁלוּ־ בָֽם׃ | And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. | “I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them.” |
וְנִגַּ֣שׂ הָעָ֔ם אִ֥ישׁ בְּאִ֖ישׁ וְאִ֣ישׁ בְּרֵעֵ֑הוּ יִרְהֲב֗וּ הַנַּ֙עַר֙ בַּזָּקֵ֔ן וְהַנִּקְלֶ֖ה בַּנִּכְבָּֽד׃ | And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. | People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored. |
כִּֽי־ יִתְפֹּ֨שׂ אִ֤ישׁ בְּאָחִיו֙ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יו שִׂמְלָ֣ה לְכָ֔ה קָצִ֖ין תִּֽהְיֶה־ לָּ֑נוּ וְהַמַּכְשֵׁלָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את תַּ֥חַת יָדֶֽךָ׃ | For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; | A man will seize one of his brothers in his father’s house, and say, “You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!” |
יִשָּׂא֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַה֤וּא ׀ לֵאמֹר֙ לֹא־ אֶהְיֶ֣ה חֹבֵ֔שׁ וּבְבֵיתִ֕י אֵ֥ין לֶ֖חֶם וְאֵ֣ין שִׂמְלָ֑ה לֹ֥א תְשִׂימֻ֖נִי קְצִ֥ין עָֽם׃ | in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” | But in that day he will cry out, “I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people.” |
כִּ֤י כָשְׁלָה֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וִיהוּדָ֖ה נָפָ֑ל כִּֽי־ לְשׁוֹנָ֤ם וּמַֽעַלְלֵיהֶם֙ אֶל־ יְהוָ֔ה לַמְר֖וֹת עֵנֵ֥י כְבוֹדֽוֹ׃ | For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. | Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. |
הַכָּרַ֤ת פְּנֵיהֶם֙ עָ֣נְתָה בָּ֔ם וְחַטָּאתָ֛ם כִּסְדֹ֥ם הִגִּ֖ידוּ לֹ֣א כִחֵ֑דוּ א֣וֹי לְנַפְשָׁ֔ם כִּֽי־ גָמְל֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם רָעָֽה׃ | For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. | The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves. |
אִמְר֥וּ צַדִּ֖יק כִּי־ ט֑וֹב כִּֽי־ פְרִ֥י מַעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ | Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. | Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds. |
א֖וֹי לְרָשָׁ֣ע רָ֑ע כִּֽי־ גְמ֥וּל יָדָ֖יו יֵעָ֥שֶׂה לּֽוֹ׃ | Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. | Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done. |
עַמִּי֙ נֹגְשָׂ֣יו מְעוֹלֵ֔ל וְנָשִׁ֖ים מָ֣שְׁלוּ ב֑וֹ עַמִּי֙ מְאַשְּׁרֶ֣יךָ מַתְעִ֔ים וְדֶ֥רֶךְ אֹֽרְחֹתֶ֖יךָ בִּלֵּֽעוּ׃ ס | My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. | Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path. |
נִצָּ֥ב לָרִ֖יב יְהוָ֑ה וְעֹמֵ֖ד לָדִ֥ין עַמִּֽים׃ | The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. | The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people. |
יְהוָה֙ בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט יָב֔וֹא עִם־ זִקְנֵ֥י עַמּ֖וֹ וְשָׂרָ֑יו וְאַתֶּם֙ בִּֽעַרְתֶּ֣ם הַכֶּ֔רֶם גְּזֵלַ֥ת הֶֽעָנִ֖י בְּבָתֵּיכֶֽם׃ | The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. | The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses. |
[מלכם] (מַה־) (לָּכֶם֙) תְּדַכְּא֣וּ עַמִּ֔י וּפְנֵ֥י עֲנִיִּ֖ים תִּטְחָ֑נוּ נְאֻם־ אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִ֖ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃ ס | What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. | What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. |
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֗ה יַ֚עַן כִּ֤י גָֽבְהוּ֙ בְּנ֣וֹת צִיּ֔וֹן וַתֵּלַ֙כְנָה֙ [נטוות] (נְטוּי֣וֹת) גָּר֔וֹן וּֽמְשַׂקְּר֖וֹת עֵינָ֑יִם הָל֤וֹךְ וְטָפֹף֙ תֵּלַ֔כְנָה וּבְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם תְּעַכַּֽסְנָה׃ | The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, | The LORD says, “The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles. |
וְשִׂפַּ֣ח אֲדֹנָ֔י קָדְקֹ֖ד בְּנ֣וֹת צִיּ֑וֹן וַיהוָ֖ה פָּתְהֵ֥ן יְעָרֶֽה׃ ס | therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. | Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald.” |
בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא יָסִ֣יר אֲדֹנָ֗י אֵ֣ת תִּפְאֶ֧רֶת הָעֲכָסִ֛ים וְהַשְּׁבִיסִ֖ים וְהַשַּׂהֲרֹנִֽים׃ | In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; | In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, |
הַנְּטִיפ֥וֹת וְהַשֵּׁיר֖וֹת וְהָֽרְעָלֽוֹת׃ | the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; | the earrings and bracelets and veils, |
הַפְּאֵרִ֤ים וְהַצְּעָדוֹת֙ וְהַקִּשֻּׁרִ֔ים וּבָתֵּ֥י הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ וְהַלְּחָשִֽׁים׃ | the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; | the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, |
הַטַּבָּע֖וֹת וְנִזְמֵ֥י הָאָֽף׃ | the signet rings and nose rings; | the signet rings and nose rings, |
הַמַּֽחֲלָצוֹת֙ וְהַמַּ֣עֲטָפ֔וֹת וְהַמִּטְפָּח֖וֹת וְהָחֲרִיטִֽים׃ | the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; | the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses |
וְהַגִּלְיֹנִים֙ וְהַסְּדִינִ֔ים וְהַצְּנִיפ֖וֹת וְהָרְדִידִֽים׃ | the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. | and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls. |
וְהָיָה֩ תַ֨חַת בֹּ֜שֶׂם מַ֣ק יִֽהְיֶ֗ה וְתַ֨חַת חֲגוֹרָ֤ה נִקְפָּה֙ וְתַ֨חַת מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה מִקְשֶׁה֙ קָרְחָ֔ה וְתַ֥חַת פְּתִיגִ֖יל מַחֲגֹ֣רֶת שָׂ֑ק כִּי־ תַ֖חַת יֹֽפִי׃ | Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. | Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding. |
מְתַ֖יִךְ בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֑לוּ וּגְבוּרָתֵ֖ךְ בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ | Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. | Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle. |
וְאָנ֥וּ וְאָבְל֖וּ פְּתָחֶ֑יהָ וְנִקָּ֖תָה לָאָ֥רֶץ תֵּשֵֽׁב׃ | And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. | The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground. |
