1After two days it was the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a treacherous way to arrest and kill Him."

1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

2Not during the festival," they said, "or there may be rioting among the people."

2“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”

3While He was in Bethany at the house of Simon who had a serious skin disease, as He was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of pure and expensive fragrant oil of nard. She broke the jar and poured it on His head.

3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.

4But some were expressing indignation to one another: "Why has this fragrant oil been wasted?

4Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked.

5For this oil might have been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to the poor." And they began to scold her.

5“It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.

6Then Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for Me.

6But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?

7You always have the poor with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have Me.

7 You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.

8She has done what she could; she has anointed My body in advance for burial.

8 She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.

9I assure you: Wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her."

9 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to hand Him over to them.

11And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him silver. So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him.

12On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb, His disciples asked Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare the Passover so You may eat it?"

12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”

13So He sent two of His disciples and told them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him.

13So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.

14Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, The Teacher says, "Where is the guest room for Me to eat the Passover with My disciples?"'

14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’

15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there."

15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”

16So the disciples went out, entered the city, and found it just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17When evening came, He arrived with the Twelve.

18While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, "I assure you: One of you will betray Me--one who is eating with Me!"

18As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”

19They began to be distressed and to say to Him one by one, "Surely not I?"

19Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”

20He said to them, "It is one of the Twelve--the one who is dipping bread with Me in the bowl.

20He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.

21For the Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."

21 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

22As they were eating, He took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body."

22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”

23Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them, and so they all drank from it.

23And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24He said to them, "This is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many.

24And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.

25I assure you: I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it in a new way in the kingdom of God."

25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”

26After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

27Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will run away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.

27On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

28But after I have been resurrected, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."

28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”

29Peter told Him, "Even if everyone runs away, I will certainly not!"

29Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.”

30"I assure you," Jesus said to him, "today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times!"

30Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

31But he kept insisting, "If I have to die with You, I will never deny You!" And they all said the same thing.

31“No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

32Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples, "Sit here while I pray."

32They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.”

33He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified.

34Then He said to them, "My soul is swallowed up in sorrow--to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake."

34He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

35Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.

35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.

36And He said, "Abba, Father! All things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will."

36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

37Then He came and found them sleeping. "Simon, are you sleeping?" He asked Peter. "Couldn't you stay awake one hour?

37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?

38Stay awake and pray so that you won't enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

38 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

39Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing.

39Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.

40And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to Him.

40When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say.

41Then He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

41When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42Get up; let's go! See--My betrayer is near."

42 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!” Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

43While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.

43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.

44His betrayer had given them a signal. "The One I kiss," he said, "He's the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard."

44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.”

45So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, "Rabbi!"--and kissed Him.

45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.

46Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him.

47And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his ear.

48But Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal, to capture Me?

48Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?

49Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex, and you didn't arrest Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."

49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”

50Then they all deserted Him and ran away.

51Now a certain young man, having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him,

51One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,

52but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes convened.

53They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.

54Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest's courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police, warming himself by the fire.

54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.

55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they could find none.

55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any.

56For many were giving false testimony against Him, but the testimonies did not agree.

56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.

57Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating, "

57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony:

58We heard Him say, 'I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.'"

58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’”

59Yet their testimony did not agree even on this.

59But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!

60Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, "Don't You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?"

60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”

61But He kept silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest questioned Him, "Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"

61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

62"I am," said Jesus, "and all of you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."

62Jesus said, “ I Am . And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. ”

63Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "Why do we still need witnesses?

63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses?

64You have heard the blasphemy! What is your decision?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.

64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!”

65Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, "Prophesy!" The temple police also took Him and slapped Him.

65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away. Peter Denies Jesus

66While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest's servants came.

67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus."

67and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth. ”

68But he denied it: "I don't know or understand what you're talking about!" Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.

68But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.

69When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, "This man is one of them!"

69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!”

70But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, "You certainly are one of them, since you're also a Galilean!"

70But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.”

71Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, "I don't know this man you're talking about!"

71Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." When he thought about it, he began to weep.

72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.
