| 1At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | 1Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived. |
| 2(Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet with her hair.) | 2(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) |
| 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick.” | 3So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, look, the one you love is sick." |
| 4When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” | 4When Jesus heard this, he said, "This sickness will not lead to death, but to God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." |

| 8“Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there?” | 8The disciples replied, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death! Are you going there again?" |
| 9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. | 9Jesus replied, "Are there not twelve hours in a day? If anyone walks around in the daytime, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. |
| 10But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.” | 10But if anyone walks around at night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." |
| 11After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up.” | 11After he said this, he added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. But I am going there to awaken him." |
| 12His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better.” | 12Then the disciples replied, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." |
| 13They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus. | 13(Now Jesus had been talking about his death, but they thought he had been talking about real sleep.) |
| 14So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, | 14Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died, |
| 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” | 15and I am glad for your sake that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." |

| 28After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.” | 28And when she had said this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, saying privately, "The Teacher is here and is asking for you." |

| 38Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. | 38Jesus, intensely moved again, came to the tomb. (Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed across it.) |
| 39“Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man. “It has already been four days.” | 39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, replied, "Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, because he has been buried four days." |
| 40Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” | 40Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?" |
| 41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. | 41So they took away the stone. Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you that you have listened to me. |
| 42I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me.” | 42I knew that you always listen to me, but I said this for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me." |

| 47Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. | 47So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the council together and said, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs. |
| 48If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” | 48If we allow him to go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away our sanctuary and our nation." |
| 49But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! | 49Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, "You know nothing at all! |
| 50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” | 50You do not realize that it is more to your advantage to have one man die for the people than for the whole nation to perish." |
| 51Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation, | 51(Now he did not say this on his own, but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish nation, |
| 52and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one. | 52and not for the Jewish nation only, but to gather together into one the children of God who are scattered.) |
| 53So from that day on they plotted to kill Him. | 53So from that day they planned together to kill him. |
| 54As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. | 56They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts, “What do you think?
