1The descendants of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.

1בְּנֵ֖י יְהוּדָ֑ה פֶּ֧רֶץ חֶצְר֛וֹן וְכַרְמִ֖י וְח֥וּר וְשׁוֹבָֽל׃

2Reaiah son of Shobal was the father of Jahath, and Jahath was the father of Ahumai and Lahad. These were the clans of the Zorathites.

2וּרְאָיָ֤ה בֶן־ שׁוֹבָל֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ יַ֔חַת וְיַ֣חַת הֹלִ֔יד אֶת־ אֲחוּמַ֖י וְאֶת־ לָ֑הַד אֵ֖לֶּה מִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת הַצָּֽרְעָתִֽי׃ ס

3These were the sons of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma, and Idbash. And their sister was named Hazzelelponi.

3וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ אֲבִ֣י עֵיטָ֔ם יִזְרְעֶ֥אל וְיִשְׁמָ֖א וְיִדְבָּ֑שׁ וְשֵׁ֥ם אֲחוֹתָ֖ם הַצְלֶלְפּֽוֹנִי׃

4Penuel was the father of Gedor, and Ezer was the father of Hushah. These were the descendants of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrath and the father of Bethlehem:

4וּפְנוּאֵל֙ אֲבִ֣י גְדֹ֔ר וְעֵ֖זֶר אֲבִ֣י חוּשָׁ֑ה אֵ֤לֶּה בְנֵי־ חוּר֙ בְּכ֣וֹר אֶפְרָ֔תָה אֲבִ֖י בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

5Ashhur was the father of Tekoa and had two wives, Helah and Naarah.

5וּלְאַשְׁחוּר֙ אֲבִ֣י תְק֔וֹעַ הָי֖וּ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֑ים חֶלְאָ֖ה וְנַעֲרָֽה׃

6Naarah bore to him Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were the descendants of Naarah.

6וַתֵּ֨לֶד ל֤וֹ נַעֲרָה֙ אֶת־ אֲחֻזָּ֣ם וְאֶת־ חֵ֔פֶר וְאֶת־ תֵּימְנִ֖י וְאֶת־ הָאֲחַשְׁתָּרִ֑י אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י נַעֲרָֽה׃

7The sons of Helah were Zereth, Zohar, and Ethnan,

7וּבְנֵ֖י חֶלְאָ֑ה צֶ֥רֶת [יצחר] (וְצֹ֖חַר) וְאֶתְנָֽן׃

8and Koz, who was the father of Anub, Zobebah, and the clans of Aharhel son of Harum.

8וְק֣וֹץ הוֹלִ֔יד אֶת־ עָנ֖וּב וְאֶת־ הַצֹּבֵבָ֑ה וּמִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת אֲחַרְחֵ֖ל בֶּן־ הָרֽוּם׃

9Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”

9וַיְהִ֣י יַעְבֵּ֔ץ נִכְבָּ֖ד מֵאֶחָ֑יו וְאִמּ֗וֹ קָרְאָ֨ה שְׁמ֤וֹ יַעְבֵּץ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כִּ֥י יָלַ֖דְתִּי בְּעֹֽצֶב׃

10And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would bless me and enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.

10וַיִּקְרָ֣א יַ֠עְבֵּץ לֵאלֹהֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל לֵאמֹ֗ר אִם־ בָּרֵ֨ךְ תְּבָרֲכֵ֜נִי וְהִרְבִּ֤יתָ אֶת־ גְּבוּלִי֙ וְהָיְתָ֤ה יָדְךָ֙ עִמִּ֔י וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ מֵּרָעָ֖ה לְבִלְתִּ֣י עָצְבִּ֑י וַיָּבֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ שָׁאָֽל׃

11Kelub the brother of Shuhah was the father of Mehir, who was the father of Eshton.

11וּכְל֥וּב אֲחִֽי־ שׁוּחָ֖ה הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ מְחִ֑יר ה֖וּא אֲבִ֥י אֶשְׁתּֽוֹן׃

12Eshton was the father of Beth-rapha, of Paseah, and of Tehinnah the father of Ir-nahash. These were the men of Recah.

12וְאֶשְׁתּ֗וֹן הוֹלִ֞יד אֶת־ בֵּ֤ית רָפָא֙ וְאֶת־ פָּסֵ֔חַ וְאֶת־ תְּחִנָּ֖ה אֲבִ֣י עִ֣יר נָחָ֑שׁ אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁ֥י רֵכָֽה׃ ס

13The sons of Kenaz: Othniel and Seraiah. The sons of Othniel: Hathath and Meonothai.

13וּבְנֵ֣י קְנַ֔ז עָתְנִיאֵ֖ל וּשְׂרָיָ֑ה וּבְנֵ֥י עָתְנִיאֵ֖ל חֲתַֽת׃

14Meonothai was the father of Ophrah, and Seraiah was the father of Joab, the father of those living in Ge-harashim, which was called this because they were craftsmen.

14וּמְעוֹנֹתַ֖י הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ עָפְרָ֑ה וּשְׂרָיָ֗ה הוֹלִ֤יד אֶת־ יוֹאָב֙ אֲבִי֙ גֵּ֣יא חֲרָשִׁ֔ים כִּ֥י חֲרָשִׁ֖ים הָיֽוּ׃ פ

15The sons of Caleb son of Jephunneh: Iru, Elah, and Naam. The son of Elah: Kenaz.

15וּבְנֵי֙ כָּלֵ֣ב בֶּן־ יְפֻנֶּ֔ה עִ֥ירוּ אֵלָ֖ה וָנָ֑עַם וּבְנֵ֥י אֵלָ֖ה וּקְנַֽז׃

16The sons of Jehallelel: Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria, and Asarel.

16וּבְנֵ֖י יְהַלֶּלְאֵ֑ל זִ֣יף וְזִיפָ֔ה תִּירְיָ֖א וַאֲשַׂרְאֵֽל׃

17The sons of Ezrah: Jether, Mered, Epher, and Jalon. And Mered’s wife Bithiah gave birth to Miriam, Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa.

17וּבֶן־ עֶזְרָ֔ה יֶ֥תֶר וּמֶ֖רֶד וְעֵ֣פֶר וְיָל֑וֹן וַתַּ֙הַר֙ אֶת־ מִרְיָ֣ם וְאֶת־ שַׁמַּ֔י וְאֶת־ יִשְׁבָּ֖ח אֲבִ֥י אֶשְׁתְּמֹֽעַ׃

18These were the sons of Pharaoh’s daughter Bithiah. Mered also took a Judean wife, who gave birth to Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah.

18וְאִשְׁתּ֣וֹ הַיְהֻדִיָּ֗ה יָלְדָ֞ה אֶת־ יֶ֨רֶד אֲבִ֤י גְדוֹר֙ וְאֶת־ חֶ֙בֶר֙ אֲבִ֣י שׂוֹכ֔וֹ וְאֶת־ יְקֽוּתִיאֵ֖ל אֲבִ֣י זָנ֑וֹחַ וְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵי֙ בִּתְיָ֣ה בַת־ פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָקַ֖ח מָֽרֶד׃ ס

19The sons of Hodiah’s wife, the sister of Naham, were the fathers of Keilah the Garmite and of Eshtemoa the Maacathite.

19וּבְנֵי֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת הֽוֹדִיָּ֔ה אֲח֣וֹת נַ֔חַם אֲבִ֥י קְעִילָ֖ה הַגַּרְמִ֑י וְאֶשְׁתְּמֹ֖עַ הַמַּעֲכָתִֽי׃

20The sons of Shimon: Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-hanan, and Tilon. The descendants of Ishi: Zoheth and Ben-zoheth.

20וּבְנֵ֣י שִׁימ֔וֹן אַמְנ֣וֹן וְרִנָּ֔ה בֶּן־ חָנָ֖ן [ותולון] (וְתִיל֑וֹן) וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׁעִ֔י זוֹחֵ֖ת וּבֶן־ זוֹחֵֽת׃

21The sons of Shelah son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah and the clans of the linen workers at Beth-ashbea,

21בְּנֵי֙ שֵׁלָ֣ה בֶן־ יְהוּדָ֔ה עֵ֚ר אֲבִ֣י לֵכָ֔ה וְלַעְדָּ֖ה אֲבִ֣י מָרֵשָׁ֑ה וּמִשְׁפְּח֛וֹת בֵּית־ עֲבֹדַ֥ת הַבֻּ֖ץ לְבֵ֥ית אַשְׁבֵּֽעַ׃

22Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and Joash and Saraph, who ruled in Moab and Jashubi-lehem. (These names are from ancient records.)

22וְיוֹקִ֞ים וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י כֹזֵבָ֗א וְיוֹאָ֧שׁ וְשָׂרָ֛ף אֲשֶׁר־ בָּעֲל֥וּ לְמוֹאָ֖ב וְיָשֻׁ֣בִי לָ֑חֶם וְהַדְּבָרִ֖ים עַתִּיקִֽים׃

23These were the potters who lived at Netaim and Gederah. They lived there in the service of the king.

23הֵ֚מָּה הַיּ֣וֹצְרִ֔ים וְיֹשְׁבֵ֥י נְטָעִ֖ים וּגְדֵרָ֑ה עִם־ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ בִּמְלַאכְתּ֖וֹ יָ֥שְׁבוּ שָֽׁם׃ ס

24The descendants of Simeon: Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul.

24בְּנֵ֖י שִׁמְע֑וֹן נְמוּאֵ֣ל וְיָמִ֔ין יָרִ֖יב זֶ֥רַח שָׁאֽוּל׃

25The sons of Shaul: Shallum, Mibsam, and Mishma.

25שַׁלֻּ֥ם בְּנ֛וֹ מִבְשָׂ֥ם בְּנ֖וֹ מִשְׁמָ֥ע בְּנֽוֹ׃

26The sons of Mishma: Hammuel, Zaccur, and Shimei.

26וּבְנֵ֖י מִשְׁמָ֑ע חַמּוּאֵ֥ל בְּנ֛וֹ זַכּ֥וּר בְּנ֖וֹ שִׁמְעִ֥י בְנֽוֹ׃

27Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children, so their whole clan did not become as numerous as the sons of Judah.

27וּלְשִׁמְעִ֞י בָּנִ֨ים שִׁשָּׁ֤ה עָשָׂר֙ וּבָנ֣וֹת שֵׁ֔שׁ וּלְאֶחָ֕יו אֵ֖ין בָּנִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים וְכֹל֙ מִשְׁפַּחְתָּ֔ם לֹ֥א הִרְבּ֖וּ עַד־ בְּנֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃ ס

28They lived in Beersheba, Moladah, Hazar-shual,

28וַיֵּֽשְׁב֛וּ בִּבְאֵֽר־ שֶׁ֥בַע וּמוֹלָדָ֖ה וַחֲצַ֥ר שׁוּעָֽל׃

29Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad,

29וּבְבִלְהָ֥ה וּבְעֶ֖צֶם וּבְתוֹלָֽד׃

30Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag,

30וּבִבְתוּאֵ֥ל וּבְחָרְמָ֖ה וּבְצִֽיקְלָֽג׃

31Beth-marcaboth, Hazar-susim, Beth-biri, and Shaaraim. These were their cities until the reign of David.

31וּבְבֵ֤ית מַרְכָּבוֹת֙ וּבַחֲצַ֣ר סוּסִ֔ים וּבְבֵ֥ית בִּרְאִ֖י וּֽבְשַׁעֲרָ֑יִם אֵ֥לֶּה עָרֵיהֶ֖ם עַד־ מְלֹ֥ךְ דָּוִֽיד׃

32And their villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, and Ashan—five towns—

32וְחַצְרֵיהֶם֙ עֵיטָ֣ם וָעַ֔יִן רִמּ֥וֹן וְתֹ֖כֶן וְעָשָׁ֑ן עָרִ֖ים חָמֵֽשׁ׃

33and all their surrounding villages as far as Baal. These were their settlements, and they kept a genealogical record:

33וְכָל־ חַצְרֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֧ר סְבִיב֛וֹת הֶעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה עַד־ בָּ֑עַל זֹ֚את מוֹשְׁבֹתָ֔ם וְהִתְיַחְשָׂ֖ם לָהֶֽם׃

34Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah son of Amaziah,

34וּמְשׁוֹבָ֣ב וְיַמְלֵ֔ךְ וְיוֹשָׁ֖ה בֶּן־ אֲמַצְיָֽה׃

35Joel, Jehu son of Joshibiah, the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel,

35וְיוֹאֵ֑ל וְיֵהוּא֙ בֶּן־ י֣וֹשִׁבְיָ֔ה בֶּן־ שְׂרָיָ֖ה בֶּן־ עֲשִׂיאֵֽל׃

36Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah,

36וְאֶלְיוֹעֵינַ֡י וְֽיַעֲקֹ֡בָה וִ֠ישׁוֹחָיָה וַעֲשָׂיָ֧ה וַעֲדִיאֵ֛ל וִישִׂימִאֵ֖ל וּבְנָיָֽה׃

37and Ziza son of Shiphi, the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah.

37וְזִיזָ֨א בֶן־ שִׁפְעִ֧י בֶן־ אַלּ֛וֹן בֶּן־ יְדָיָ֥ה בֶן־ שִׁמְרִ֖י בֶּן־ שְׁמַֽעְיָֽה׃

38These men noted by name were the leaders of their clans. Their families increased greatly,

38אֵ֚לֶּה הַבָּאִ֣ים בְּשֵׁמ֔וֹת נְשִׂיאִ֖ים בְּמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָ֑ם וּבֵית֙ אֲב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם פָּרְצ֖וּ לָרֽוֹב׃

39and they journeyed to the entrance of Gedor, to the east side of the valley, in search of pasture for their flocks.

39וַיֵּלְכוּ֙ לִמְב֣וֹא גְדֹ֔ר עַ֖ד לְמִזְרַ֣ח הַגָּ֑יְא לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ מִרְעֶ֖ה לְצֹאנָֽם׃

40There they found rich, good pasture, and the land was spacious, peaceful, and quiet, for some Hamites had lived there formerly.

40וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ מִרְעֶה֙ שָׁמֵ֣ן וָט֔וֹב וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ רַחֲבַ֣ת יָדַ֔יִם וְשֹׁקֶ֖טֶת וּשְׁלֵוָ֑ה כִּ֣י מִן־ חָ֔ם הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים שָׁ֖ם לְפָנִֽים׃

41These who were noted by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites and Meunites there in their dwellings and devoted them to destruction, as is evident to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks.

41וַיָּבֹ֡אוּ אֵלֶּה֩ הַכְּתוּבִ֨ים בְּשֵׁמ֜וֹת בִּימֵ֣י ׀ יְחִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־ יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּכּ֨וּ אֶת־ אָהֳלֵיהֶ֜ם וְאֶת־ [המעינים] (הַמְּעוּנִ֨ים) אֲשֶׁ֤ר נִמְצְאוּ־ שָׁ֙מָּה֙ וַיַּחֲרִימֻם֙ עַד־ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ תַּחְתֵּיהֶ֑ם כִּֽי־ מִרְעֶ֥ה לְצֹאנָ֖ם שָֽׁם׃

42And five hundred of these Simeonites led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, went to the hill country of Seir

42וּמֵהֶ֣ם ׀ מִן־ בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֗וֹן הָלְכוּ֙ לְהַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר אֲנָשִׁ֖ים חֲמֵ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וּפְלַטְיָ֡ה וּ֠נְעַרְיָה וּרְפָיָ֧ה וְעֻזִּיאֵ֛ל בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׁעִ֖י בְּרֹאשָֽׁם׃

43and struck down the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped. And they have lived there to this day.

43וַיַּכּ֕וּ אֶת־ שְׁאֵרִ֥ית הַפְּלֵטָ֖ה לַעֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ שָׁ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
