After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias).1After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs He was performing on the sick.2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.
Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.3Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.
Now the Jewish Feast of the Passover was near.4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?”5Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”
But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”
One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
“Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”
“Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted.11Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.
And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”
So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.
When the people saw the sign that Jesus had performed, they began to say, “Truly this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by Himself.15Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.
When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified.19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.
But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.26Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”28Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”
Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform, so that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?30So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
“Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.”34They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.
Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me.38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”41So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven?’ ”42They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus replied.43Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me—45It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—
not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.46not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.47Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life.48I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die.50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.”51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you.53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink.55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever.”58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
Jesus said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.59Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?”60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you?61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?
Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
However, there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray Him.)64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.”65And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
From that time on many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.66After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”67So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”70Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.71He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.
