Healing the Leper. The beginning, etc. This is a sort of title. The whole history of Jesus is an unfolding of the gospel. Gospel. Good news. Jesus. The personal name given by the angel (Mt 1:21), meaning Savior. Christ. The official title of the Lord. It means the anointed. Kings and priests were anointed in Israel, and Jesus, the Lord's Anointed (see 1Sa 24:10) is our Priest and King. They were anointed with oil; Jesus with the Holy Spirit (Ac 10:38). As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 1:2,3 As it is written in the prophets. Isa 40:3 Mal 3:1. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness. For account of the wilderness and John the Baptist, see PNT Mt 3:1.
And preach the baptism of repentance. He preached, as well as baptized. Only those who repented were fit subjects of baptism. Hence it was called the baptism of repentance. Repentance signifies not only sorrow for sin, but the resolve to sin no more. For the remission of sins. This indicates the object of repentance and baptism. Those who repented and were baptized were pardoned. Both were needful to remission. Compare Ac 2:38. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. 1:5 There went out unto him. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; 1:6 John was clothed with camel's hair. See PNT Mt 3:4.
And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. 1:7 There cometh one... after me. See PNT Mt 3:11.
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. 1:8 He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. See PNT Mt 3:11.
And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. 1:9 In those days. When John had been preaching and baptizing about six months. For the account of the baptism of Jesus see notes on Mt 3:13,17.
And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: 1:10 Straightaway coming up out of the water. The Greek preposition translated out of is ek, which means out from within. This could only be true of immersion. Thus all great and candid Pedo-baptist scholars concede that Christ was baptized.
And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. 1:13 Tempted of Satan. See notes on Mt 4:1-11.
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 1:14 Now after John was put in prison. Mark proceeds to the account of the Savior's public ministry in Galilee. Between Christ's baptism and this occurred the events narrated in John, chapters 2,3, and 4. And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 1:16 He saw Simon and Andrew. For notes on the call of the four apostles see Mt 4:18-22.
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 1:21 They went into Capernaum. For account of Capernaum, see PNT Mt 4:13.
Entered into the synagogue. For description of Jewish synagogue, see PNT Mt 4:23. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. 1:22 They were astonished at his doctrine. See PNT Mt 7:28.
Scribes. For account of scribes, see PNT Mt 5:20. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 1:23 A man with an unclean spirit. See PNT Mt 8:28. Compare Lu 4:31-37. The New Testament plainly teaches that demoniac possession was a real and actual possession of the soul by a fallen spirit.
Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. 1:24 What have we to do with thee? A common Jewish way of saying, Do not trouble us.
Art thou come to destroy us? An admission that Christ came to destroy the devil and his works. I know thee. The demon made a better confession that most of the Jews. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. 1:26 He came out of him. At the command. The whole account shows that there was a real possession by an evil spirit.
And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. 1:27 They were all amazed. Those in the synagogue.
And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee. 1:28 His fame spread abroad. For notes on the increasing fame of Christ, see Mt 4:25.

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. 1:35 And in the morning. See PNT Mt 8:17.
And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. 1:36 Simon. Peter.
They that were with him. The other disciples. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. 1:38 Let us go into the next towns. The villages of Galilee.
And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils. 1:39 Throughout all Galilee. This was the first missionary circuit of Galilee. Galilee was then densely peopled. Josephus says it contained 240 towns and villages.
And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 1:40 There came a leper. See notes on Mt 8:2-4. Compare also Lu 5:12-15. This miracle occurred after the Sermon on the Mount. Leprosy, that terrible scourge of the East, is unknown in our times, or even in the United States.
And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 1:44 Show thyself to the priest. At Jerusalem.

But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter. 1:45 Came to him from every quarter.
