Isaiah 28

The Captivity of Ephraim

1  ה֗וֹי (Woe) עֲטֶ֤רֶת (to the crown) גֵּאוּת֙ (of pride), שִׁכֹּרֵ֣י (to the drunkards) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim),

וְצִ֥יץ (and flower) נֹבֵ֖ל (withering) צְבִ֣י (the beauty) תִפְאַרְתּ֑וֹ (of his glory),

אֲשֶׁ֛ר (which is) עַל־ (at) רֹ֥אשׁ (the head) גֵּֽיא־ (of the valley) שְׁמָנִ֖ים (of fatness),

הֲל֥וּמֵי (those having been struck down) יָֽיִן׃ (by wine).

2  הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), חָזָ֤ק (a mighty) וְאַמִּץ֙ (and strong one)

לַֽאדֹנָ֔י (is unto the Lord),

כְּזֶ֥רֶם (like a storm) בָּרָ֖ד (of hail) שַׂ֣עַר (and a tempest) קָ֑טֶב (of destruction),

כְּ֠זֶרֶם (like a flood) מַ֣יִם (of waters) כַּבִּירִ֥ים (mighty) שֹׁטְפִ֛ים (overflowing),

הִנִּ֥יחַ (He will bring it) לָאָ֖רֶץ (to the earth) בְּיָֽד׃ (with the hand).

3  בְּרַגְלַ֖יִם (With his feet) תֵּֽרָמַ֑סְנָה (will be trampled) עֲטֶ֥רֶת (the crown) גֵּא֖וּת (of the pride),

שִׁכּוֹרֵ֥י (of the drunkards) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (of Ephraim),

4  וְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה (and will be) צִיצַ֤ת (the flower) נֹבֵל֙ (fading) צְבִ֣י (the beauty)

תִפְאַרְתּ֔וֹ (of his glory) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עַל־ (is on) רֹ֖אשׁ (the head) גֵּ֣יא (of the valley),

שְׁמָנִ֑ים (of fatness) כְּבִכּוּרָהּ֙ (like a ripe fig) בְּטֶ֣רֶם (before) קַ֔יִץ (summer),

אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) יִרְאֶ֤ה (sees) הָֽרֹאֶה֙ (the one seeing); אוֹתָ֔הּ (it)

בְּעוֹדָ֥הּ (and with it still) בְּכַפּ֖וֹ (in his palm) יִבְלָעֶֽנָּה׃ס (he swallows it).

5  בַּיּ֣וֹם (Day) הַה֗וּא (in that) יִֽהְיֶה֙ (will be) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts)

לַעֲטֶ֣רֶת (as a crown) צְבִ֔י (of glory), וְלִצְפִירַ֖ת (and a diadem) תִּפְאָרָ֑ה (of beauty) לִשְׁאָ֖ר (for the remnant) עַמּֽוֹ׃ (of His people),

6  וּלְר֖וּחַ (and as a spirit) מִשְׁפָּ֑ט (of justice) לַיּוֹשֵׁב֙ (for the one sitting) עַל־ (in) הַמִּשְׁפָּ֔ט (judgment),

וְלִ֨גְבוּרָ֔ה (and as strength) מְשִׁיבֵ֥י (for those turning back) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (the battle) שָֽׁעְרָה׃ס (at the gate).

7  וְגַם־ (And also) אֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) בַּיַּ֣יִן (through wine), שָׁג֔וּ (have erred)

וּבַשֵּׁכָ֖ר (and with strong drink) תָּע֑וּ (have wandered);

כֹּהֵ֣ן (priest) וְנָבִיא֩ (and prophet) שָׁג֨וּ (have erred) בַשֵּׁכָ֜ר (through strong drink),

נִבְלְע֣וּ (and are swallowed up) מִן־ (by) הַיַּ֗יִן (the wine),

תָּעוּ֙ (they go astray) מִן־ (through) הַשֵּׁכָ֔ר (strong drink);

שָׁגוּ֙ (they err) בָּֽרֹאֶ֔ה (in vision), פָּק֖וּ (they have stumbled) פְּלִילִיָּֽה׃ (in judgment).

8  כִּ֚י (For) כָּל־ (all) שֻׁלְחָנ֔וֹת (the tables) מָלְא֖וּ (are full of) קִ֣יא (vomit)

צֹאָ֑ה (and filth), בְּלִ֖י (without) מָקֽוֹם׃ס (a place to stand).

9  אֶת־ (To) מִי֙ (whom) יוֹרֶ֣ה (will He teach) דֵעָ֔ה (knowledge)?

וְאֶת־ (And) מִ֖י (to whom) יָבִ֣ין (will he explain) שְׁמוּעָ֑ה (the message)?

גְּמוּלֵי֙ (Those weaned) מֵֽחָלָ֔ב (from milk),

עַתִּיקֵ֖י (those removed) מִשָּׁדָֽיִם׃ (from the breasts).

10  כִּ֣י (For)

צַ֤ו (Order) לָצָו֙ (on order), צַ֣ו (order) לָצָ֔ו (on order);

קַ֥ו (line) לָקָ֖ו (on line), קַ֣ו (line) לָקָ֑ו (on line);

זְעֵ֥יר (a little), שָׁ֖ם (here) זְעֵ֥יר (a little); שָֽׁם׃ (there).

11  כִּ֚י (Indeed) בְּלַעֲגֵ֣י (with mocking) שָׂפָ֔ה (lips) וּבְלָשׁ֖וֹן (and a tongue) אַחֶ֑רֶת (foreign)

יְדַבֵּ֖ר (He will speak) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֥ם (the people) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 12  אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (Whom) אָמַ֣ר (He said), אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to)

זֹ֤את (This is) הַמְּנוּחָה֙ (the resting) הָנִ֣יחוּ (may they give rest); לֶֽעָיֵ֔ף (to the weary)

וְזֹ֖את (and this is) הַמַּרְגֵּעָ֑ה (the refreshing),

וְלֹ֥א (they were not) אָב֖וּא (willing) שְׁמֽוֹעַ׃ (to listen).

13  וְהָיָ֨ה (And will become) לָהֶ֜ם (to them) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH)

צַ֣ו (Order) לָצָ֞ו (on order), צַ֤ו (order) לָצָו֙ (on order);

קַ֤ו (line) לָקָו֙ (on line), קַ֣ו (line) לָקָ֔ו (on line);

זְעֵ֥יר (a little), שָׁ֖ם (here) זְעֵ֣יר (a little); שָׁ֑ם (there)

לְמַ֨עַן (that) יֵלְכ֜וּ (they might go), וְכָשְׁל֤וּ (and stumble) אָחוֹר֙ (backward),

וְנִשְׁבָּ֔רוּ (and be broken), וְנוֹקְשׁ֖וּ (and ensnared), וְנִלְכָּֽדוּ׃פ (and captured).

14  לָכֵ֛ן (Therefore) שִׁמְע֥וּ (hear) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), אַנְשֵׁ֣י (O men), לָצ֑וֹן (of scorning)

מֹֽשְׁלֵי֙ (rulers) הָעָ֣ם (of the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who are) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

15  כִּ֣י (For) אֲמַרְתֶּ֗ם (you⁺ have said), כָּרַ֤תְנֽוּ (We have cut) בְרִית֙ (a covenant) אֶת־ (with) מָ֔וֶת (death),

וְעִם־ (and with) שְׁא֖וֹל (Sheol) עָשִׂ֣ינוּ (we have made) חֹזֶ֑ה (an agreement);

שִׁיט (the scourge) שׁוֹטֵ֤ף (overflowing) כִּֽי־ (when) עָבַר (it passes over),

לֹ֣א (not) יְבוֹאֵ֔נוּ (it will come to us)

כִּ֣י (for) שַׂ֧מְנוּ (we have made) כָזָ֛ב (falsehood) מַחְסֵ֖נוּ (our refuge),

וּבַשֶּׁ֥קֶר (and in deception) נִסְתָּֽרְנוּ׃ס (we have hidden ourselves).

16  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH),

הִנְנִ֛י (Behold) יִסַּ֥ד (I lay for a foundation) בְּצִיּ֖וֹן (in Zion) אָ֑בֶן (a stone),

אֶ֣בֶן (a stone), בֹּ֜חַן (tested)

פִּנַּ֤ת (a cornerstone) יִקְרַת֙ (precious) מוּסָ֣ד (foundation), מוּסָּ֔ד (a sure)

הַֽמַּאֲמִ֖ין (for the one firm in faith) לֹ֥א (not) יָחִֽישׁ׃ (will be in haste).

17  וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י (And I will make) מִשְׁפָּט֙ (justice) לְקָ֔ו (the measuring line),

וּצְדָקָ֖ה (and righteousness) לְמִשְׁקָ֑לֶת (the plumbline);

וְיָעָ֤ה (and will sweep away) בָרָד֙ (the hail) מַחְסֵ֣ה (the refuge) כָזָ֔ב (of lies),

וְסֵ֥תֶר (and the hiding place) מַ֖יִם (the waters) יִשְׁטֹֽפוּ׃ (will overflow).

18  וְכֻפַּ֤ר (And will be dissolved), בְּרִֽיתְכֶם֙ (your⁺ covenant) אֶת־ (with) מָ֔וֶת (death)

וְחָזוּתְכֶ֥ם (and your⁺ agreement) אֶת־ (with) שְׁא֖וֹל (Sheol) לֹ֣א (not) תָק֑וּם (will stand);

שׁ֤וֹט (the scourge) שׁוֹטֵף֙ (overflowing) כִּ֣י (when) יַֽעֲבֹ֔ר (it passes over),

וִהְיִ֥יתֶם (then you⁺ will be) ל֖וֹ (by it) לְמִרְמָֽס׃ (trampled).

19  מִדֵּ֤י (As often as) עָבְרוֹ֙ (it passes over)

יִקַּ֣ח (it will take) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺)

כִּֽי־ (for) בַבֹּ֧קֶר (morning) בַּבֹּ֛קֶר (by morning) יַעֲבֹ֖ר (it will pass over),

בַּיּ֣וֹם (and by day) וּבַלָּ֑יְלָה (and by night),

וְהָיָ֥ה (then it will be) רַק־ (only) זְוָעָ֖ה (a terror)

הָבִ֥ין (to understand) שְׁמוּעָֽה׃ (the report).

20  כִּֽי־ (For) קָצַ֥ר (is too short) הַמַּצָּ֖ע (the bed) מֵֽהִשְׂתָּרֵ֑עַ (for stretching out)

וְהַמַּסֵּכָ֥ה (and the covering) צָ֖רָה (too narrow) כְּהִתְכַּנֵּֽס׃ (for wrapping oneself).

21  כִּ֤י (For) כְהַר־ (as at Mount) פְּרָצִים֙ (Perazim) יָק֣וּם (will rise up) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

כְּעֵ֖מֶק (as in the Valley) בְּגִבְע֣וֹן (of Gibeon), יִרְגָּ֑ז (He will rouse Himself)

לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת (to do) מַעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ (His work), זָ֣ר (strange) מַעֲשֵׂ֔הוּ (His work);

וְלַֽעֲבֹד֙ (and to perform) עֲבֹ֣דָת֔וֹ (His task), נָכְרִיָּ֖ה (unusual) עֲבֹדָתֽוֹ׃ (His work).

22  וְעַתָּה֙ (And now) אַל־ (not) תִּתְלוֹצָ֔צוּ (do mock),

פֶּֽן־ (lest) יֶחְזְק֖וּ (be made strong); מֽוֹסְרֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ bonds)

כִּֽי־ (for) כָלָ֨ה (destruction), וְנֶחֱרָצָ֜ה (is decreed) שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי (I have heard) מֵאֵ֨ת (from) אֲדֹנָ֧י (the Lord) יְהוִ֛ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts)

עַל־ (upon) כָּל־ (all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).

Listen and Hear

23  הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ (Give ear), וְשִׁמְע֖וּ (and hear) קוֹלִ֑י (my voice);

הַקְשִׁ֥יבוּ (pay attention), וְשִׁמְע֖וּ (and hear) אִמְרָתִֽי׃ (my speech).

24  הֲכֹ֣ל (All) הַיּ֔וֹם (the day) יַחֲרֹ֥שׁ (plow) הַחֹרֵ֖שׁ (the one plowing) לִזְרֹ֑עַ (to sow)?

יְפַתַּ֥ח (He opens) וִֽישַׂדֵּ֖ד (and harrows) אַדְמָתֽוֹ׃ (his ground)?

25  הֲלוֹא֙ (Not) אִם־ (when) שִׁוָּ֣ה (he has leveled) פָנֶ֔יהָ (its face)

וְהֵפִ֥יץ (and does he scatter) קֶ֖צַח (caraway), וְכַמֹּ֣ן (and cummin), יִזְרֹ֑ק (sow)

וְשָׂ֨ם (and put) חִטָּ֤ה (the wheat) שׂוֹרָה֙ (in a row) וּשְׂעֹרָ֣ה (and the barley)

נִסְמָ֔ן (in the appointed place) וְכֻסֶּ֖מֶת (and the spelt) גְּבֻלָתֽוֹ׃ (at its border)?

26  וְיִסְּר֥וֹ (And He instructs him) לַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט (in judgment),

אֱלֹהָ֥יו (His God) יוֹרֶֽנּוּ׃ (teaches him).

27  כִּ֣י (For) לֹ֤א (not) בֶֽחָרוּץ֙ (with a sledge), י֣וּדַשׁ (is threshed) קֶ֔צַח (caraway)

וְאוֹפַ֣ן (and the wheel) עֲגָלָ֔ה (of a cart) עַל־ (over) כַּמֹּ֖ן (the cumin); יוּסָּ֑ב (is not rolled)

כִּ֧י (but) בַמַּטֶּ֛ה (with the staff), יֵחָ֥בֶט (is beaten out) קֶ֖צַח (caraway)

וְכַמֹּ֥ן (and the cummin) בַּשָּֽׁבֶט׃ (with the rod).

28  לֶ֣חֶם (Bread) יוּדָ֔ק (must be ground);

כִּ֛י (but) לֹ֥א (not) לָנֶ֖צַח (forever) אָד֣וֹשׁ (the one threshing) יְדוּשֶׁ֑נּוּ (he does thresh it)

וְ֠הָמַם (and he runs it over) גִּלְגַּ֧ל (with the wheels) עֶגְלָת֛וֹ (of his cart),

וּפָרָשָׁ֖יו (and his horses) לֹֽא־ (not) יְדֻקֶּֽנּוּ׃ (do crush it).

29  גַּם־ (Also) זֹ֕את (this) מֵעִ֛ם (from) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) יָצָ֑אָה (has gone forth),

הִפְלִ֣יא (wonderful) עֵצָ֔ה (in counsel),

הִגְדִּ֖יל (great) תּוּשִׁיָּֽה׃ס (in wisdom).
