1	After these Jesus departed beyond the sea of Galilee, of Tiberias.	After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.	Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),
2	And a great crowd followed him, for they saw his signs which he did upon the sick.	And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.	and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.
3	And Jesus went up into the mount, and sat there with his disciples.	Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.	Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
4	And the pascha was near, the festival of the Jews.	Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.	The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5	Then Jesus having lifted up the eyes, and seen that a great crowd comes to him, says to Philip, Whence shall we buy loaves that these might eat?	Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”	When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
6	And this he said trying him: for himself knew what he was about to do.	He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.	He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7	Philip answered him. Loaves of two hundred drachmas will not suffice them, that each of them should take some little.	Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”	Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8	One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him,	One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,	Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,

10	And Jesus said, Make the men recline. And there was much grass in the place. Then the men reclined, the number about five thousand.	Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.	Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
11	And Jesus took the loaves; and having given thanks, distributed to his disciples, and the disciples to the reclining; and likewise of the small fishes, as many as they wished.	Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.	Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12	And when they were filled, he says to his disciples, Gather the fragments remaining over, that nothing should be lost.	And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”	When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
13	Then gathered they, and filled twelve baskets of the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over to them having eaten.	So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.	So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14	Then the men, having seen the sign which Jesus did, said, That this is truly the prophet coming into the world.	When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”	After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
15	Then Jesus having known that they were about to come and carry him of forcibly, that they might make him king, departed again to the mount alone.	Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.	Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

17	And having entered into a ship, they came beyond the sea to Capernaum. And already was there darkness, and Jesus had not come to them.	got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20	And he says to them, I am; be not afraid.	But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”	But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
21	Then they wished to take him into the ship: and the ship was quickly at land to which they retired.	Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.	Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22	The morrow, the crowd standing beyond the sea having seen that no other small vessel was there, except that one into which his disciples had entered, and that Jesus entered not with his disciples into the small vessel, but his disciples departed alone;	On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.	The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.
23	(But also other small vessels came out of Tiberias near to the place where they ate bread, the Lord having returned thanks:)	Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.	Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24	When the crowd therefore saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they also entered into ships, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.	So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.	Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
25	And having found them beyond the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou here?	When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”	When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26	Jesus answered them and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but for that ye ate of the loaves, and were satisfied.	Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.	Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27	Work not for food perishing, but food remaining to eternal life, which the Son of man will give you: for him God the Father sealed.	Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”	Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28	Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?	Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”	Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29	Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye should believe in him whom he has sent.	Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”	Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30	Then said they to him, What sign doest thou, that we might see, and believe thee? what workest thou?	So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?	So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
31	Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.	Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”	Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32	Then said Jesus to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses has not given you bread from heaven; but my Father gives you true bread from heaven.	Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.	Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
33	For the bread of God is he coming down from heaven, and giving life to the world.	For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”	For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34	Then said they to him, Lord, always give us this bread.	They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”	“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35	And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he coming to me should not hunger; and he believing in me should not thirst.	Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.	Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36	But I said to you, That ye have seen me, and believe not.	But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.	But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
37	All that the Father gives me shall come to me; and he coming to me I will not cast out.	All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.	All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
38	For I have come down from heaven, not that I might do my will, but the will of him having sent me.	For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.	For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
39	And this is the will of the Father having sent me, that all which he has given me, I should not loose of it, but raise it up in the last day.	And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.	And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
40	And this is the will of him having sent me, that every one seeing the Son, and believing in him, should have eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day.	For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”	For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41	Then murmured the Jews about him, because he said, I am the bread having come down from heaven.	So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”	At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
42	And they said, Is not this Jesus, Joseph's son, whose father and mother we know? how then says he, That I have come down from heaven?	They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”	They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43	Then answered Jesus and said to them, Murmur not with one another.	Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.	“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered.
44	None can come to me, except the Father having sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.	No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.	“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.
45	It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one therefore having heard and learned of the Father, comes to me.	It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—	It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
46	Not that any one has seen the Father, except he being from God, he has seen the Father.	not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.	No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.
47	Truly, truly, I say to you, he believing in me has eternal life.	Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.	Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
48	I am the bread of life.	I am the bread of life.	I am the bread of life.
49	Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and died.	Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.	Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50	This is the bread which coming down from heaven, that whoever should eat of it, and he should not die.	This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.	But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.
51	I am the living bread which having come down from heaven: if any one eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and also the bread which I shall give is my flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.	I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”	I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52	Then the Jews contended with one another, saying, How can he give us the flesh to eat.	The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”	Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53	Then said Jesus to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves.	So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.	Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54	He chewing my flesh, and drinking my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.	Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.	Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
55	For my flesh is truly food, and my blood is truly drink.	For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.	For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
56	He chewing my flesh, and drinking my blood, remains in me, and I in him.	Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.	Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.
57	As the living Father sent me, and I live through the Father: also he chewing me, the same also shall live through me.	As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.	Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
58	This is the bread which having come down from heaven: not as your fathers ate manna, and died: he chewing this bread shall live forever.	This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”	This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
59	He said these, teaching in the synagogue, in Capernaum.	Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.	He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60	Then many of his disciples, having heard, said, This is a hard word; who can hear it.	When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”	On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61	And Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmur for this, said to them, Does this offend you?	But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?	Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?
62	If then ye see the Son of man going up where he was before.	Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?	Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!
63	It is the spirit making alive; the flesh profits nothing: the words which I speak to you are spirit, and are life.	It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.	The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.
64	But there are some of you who believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they are not believing, and who he is going to deliver him up.	But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)	Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.
65	And he said, Therefore have I said to you, that no one can come to me, except it be given him of my Father.	And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”	He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66	From this many of his disciples went away back, and walked no more with him.	After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.	From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67	Then said Jesus to the twelve, And ye will not go away?	So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”	“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68	Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go away? thou hast the words of eternal life.	Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,	Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69	And we have believed, and known, that thou art Christ, Son of the living God.	and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”	We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70	Jesus answered them, Have I not chosen you twelve, and of you one is a devil?	Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”	Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
71	And he spake of Judas Iscariot, of Simon: for he was about to deliver him up, being one of the twelve.	He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.	(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
