1	AFTER these things, Jesus went to the port of the sea of Galilee, at Tiberias.	After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.	Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),
2	And a great many people followed him, because they saw the miracles which he performed on sick people.	And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.	and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.
3	So Jesus went up to the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples.	Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.	Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.

5	And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and saw a large crowd coming to him, and he said to Philip, Where can we buy bread that all these may eat?	Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”	When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
6	He said this merely to test him; for he knew what he would do.	He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.	He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7	Philip said to him, Two hundred pennies worth of bread would not be sufficient for them, even if each one should take a little.	Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”	Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8	One of his disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,	One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,	Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,
9	There is a boy here, who has with him five barley loaves and two fishes; but what are these for all of them?	“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”	“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
10	Jesus said to them, Make all the men sit down. There was much grass in that place. So the males sat down, five thousand in number.	Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.	Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
11	And Jesus took the bread, and blessed it, and distributed it to those who were sitting down; likewise the fish also, as much as they wanted.	Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.	Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12	When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, so that nothing is lost.	And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”	When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
13	And they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces, which were left over by those who ate from five barley loaves. 14	Then the men who saw the miracle which Jesus performed said, Truly this is the prophet who is to come into the world.	When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”	After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
15	But Jesus knew that they were ready to come and seize him to make him a king, so he departed to the mountain alone.	Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.	Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going. 22	The next day, the multitude which stood waiting at the seaport saw no other boat there, except the boat in which the disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples.	On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.	The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.
23	But other boats had come from Tiberias, near the place where they had eaten bread, when Jesus blessed it.	Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.	Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24	And when the people saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they entered the boats and came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus.	So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.	Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
25	And when they found him at the seaport, they said to him, Teacher, when did you come here?	When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”	When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26	Jesus answered and said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but just because you ate bread and were filled.	Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.	Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27	Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures unto life everlasting, which the Son of man will give you; for this one God the Father has sealed.	Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”	Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28	They said to him, What shall we do to work the works of God?	Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”	Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29	Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you should believe in him whom he has sent.	Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”	Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30	They said to him, What miracle do you perform that we may see and believe in you? What have you performed?	So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?	So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
31	Our forefathers ate manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.	Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”	Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32	Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, It was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.	Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.	Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36	But I have said to you, that you have seen me and yet you do not believe.	But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.	But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
37	Everyone whom my Father has given me shall come to me; and he who comes to me, I will not cast him out.	All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.	All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
38	For I came down from heaven, not merely to do my own will, but to do the will of him who sent me.	For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.	For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
39	This is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but should raise it up at the last day.	And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.	And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
40	For this is the will of my Father, that whoever sees the Son and believes in him, shall have life everlasting; and I will raise him up at the last day.	For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”	For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41	Now the Jews murmured against him, for he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.	So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”	At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
42	And they said, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how can he say, I have come down from heaven?	They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”	They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43	Jesus answered and said to them, Do not murmur one with another.	Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.	“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered.
44	No man can come to me, except the Father who sent me draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day.	No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.	“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.
45	For it is written in the prophet, They shall all be taught by God. Everyone therefore who hears from the Father and learns from him, will come to me.	It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—	It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
46	No man can see the Father, except he who is from God, he can see the Father.	not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.	No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.
47	Truly, truly, I say to you, He who believes in me has eternal life.	Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.	Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
48	I am the bread of life.	I am the bread of life.	I am the bread of life.
49	Your forefathers ate manna in the wilderness, and yet they died.	Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.	Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50	This is the bread which came down from heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die.	This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.	But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.
51	I am the living bread because I came down from heaven; if any man eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread which I will give, is my body, which I am giving for the sake of the life of the world.	I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”	I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52	The Jews argued one with another, saying, How can this man give us his body to eat?	The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”	Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53	Jesus said to them. Truly, truly I say to you, Unless you eat the body of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves,	So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.	Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54	He who eats of my body, and drinks of my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him at the last day.	Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.	Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
55	For my body truly is the food, and my blood truly is the drink.	For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.	For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
56	He who eats my body and drinks my blood, will abide with me, and I with him.	Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.	Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.
57	Just as the living Father sent me, and I am living because of the Father, so whoever eats me, will also live because of me.	As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.	Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
58	This is the bread which came down from heaven; it is not like that manna which your forefathers ate and died; he who eats of this bread shall live forever.	This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”	This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
59	These things he said in the synagogue, while he was teaching at Capernaum.	Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.	He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60	Many of his disciples who heard it said, This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?	When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”	On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61	Jesus knew in himself that his disciples were murmuring about this; so he said to them, Does this cause you to stumble?	But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?	Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?
62	What then if you should see the Son of man ascending to the place where he was before?	Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?	Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!
63	It is the spirit that gives life; the body is of no account; the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and life.	It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.	The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.
64	But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew for a long while who were those who did not believe, and who was to betray him.	But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)	Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.
65	And he said to them, For this reason I have told you that no man can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.	And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”	He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66	Just because of this saying, a great many of his disciples turned away, and did not walk with him.	After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.	From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67	So Jesus said to his twelve, Why, do you also want to go away?	So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”	“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68	Simon Peter answered and said, My Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life.	Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,	Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69	And we have believed and known that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.	and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”	We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70	Jesus said to them, Did not I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is Satan?	Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”	Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
71	He said it concerning Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot; for he was the one of the twelve who was going to betray him.	He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.	(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
