1	After these things, Jesus traveled across the sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.	After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.	Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),
2	And a great multitude was following him, for they saw the signs that he was accomplishing toward those who were infirm.	And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.	and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.
3	Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.	Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.	Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
4	Now the Passover, the feast day of the Jews, was near.	Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.	The Jewish Passover Festival was near.
5	And so, when Jesus had lifted up his eyes and had seen that a very great multitude came to him, he said to Philip, “From where should we buy bread, so that these may eat?”	Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”	When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
6	But he said this to test him. For he himself knew what he would do.	He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.	He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7	Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii of bread would not be sufficient for each of them to receive even a little.”	Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”	Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8	One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him:	One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,	Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,
9	“There is a certain boy here, who has five barley loaves and two fish. 10	Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat. Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).
11	Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.	Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.	Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12	Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”	And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”	When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
13	And so they gathered, and they filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which were left over from those who had eaten.	So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.	So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14	Therefore, those men, when they had seen that Jesus had accomplished a sign, they said, “Truly, this one is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”	When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”	After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
15	And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.	Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.	Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
16	Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.	When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,	When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
17	And when they had climbed into a boat, they went across the sea to Capernaum. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.
20	But he said to them: “It is I. Do not be afraid.”	But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”	But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
21	Therefore, they were willing to receive him into the boat. But immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.	Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going. 22	On the next day, the crowd which was standing across the sea saw that there were no other small boats in that place, except one, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had departed alone.	On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.	The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.
23	Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.	Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.	Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24	Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.	So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.	Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
25	And when they had found him across the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”	When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”	When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26	Jesus answered them and said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you seek me, not because you have seen signs, but because you have eaten from the bread and were satisfied.	Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.	Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27	Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”	Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”	Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28	Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”	Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”	Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29	Jesus responded and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he sent.”	Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”	Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30	And so they said to him: “Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?	So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?	So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
31	Our fathers ate manna in the desert, just as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”	Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”	Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
32	Therefore, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.	Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.	Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
33	For the bread of God is he who descends from heaven and gives life to the world.”	For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”	For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34	And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”	They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”	“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35	Then Jesus said to them: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.	Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.	Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36	But I say to you, that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.	But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.	But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
37	All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.	All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.	All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
38	For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.	For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.	For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
39	Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.	And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.	And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.
40	So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”	For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”	For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41	Therefore, the Jews murmured about him, because he had said: “I am the living bread, who descended from heaven.”	So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”	At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
42	And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ”	They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”	They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
43	And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.	Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.	“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered.
44	No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.	No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.	“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.
45	It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.	It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—	It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
46	Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God; this one has seen the Father.	not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.	No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.
47	Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.	Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.	Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.
48	I am the bread of life.	I am the bread of life.	I am the bread of life.
49	Your fathers ate manna in the desert, and they died.	Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.	Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50	This is the bread which descends from heaven, so that if anyone will eat from it, he may not die.	This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.	But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.
51	<V 6:51>I am the living bread, who descended from heaven. <V 6:52>If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.”	I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”	I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52	<V 6:53>Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”	The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”	Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53	<V 6:54>And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you.	So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 59	<V 6:60>He said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.	Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.	He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60	<V 6:61>Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”	When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”	On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61	<V 6:62>But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: “Does this offend you?	But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?	Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?
62	<V 6:63>Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?	Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?	Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!
63	<V 6:64>It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh does not offer anything of benefit. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.	It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.	The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.
64	<V 6:65>But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.	But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)	Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.
65	<V 6:66>And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”	And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”	He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66	<V 6:67>After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.	After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.	From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67	<V 6:68>Therefore, Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”	So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”	“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68	<V 6:69>Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.	Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,	Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69	<V 6:70>And we have believed, and we recognize that you are the Christ, the Son of God.”	and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”	We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
70	<V 6:71>Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”	Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”	Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”
71	<V 6:72>Now he was speaking about Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. For this one, even though he was one of the twelve, was about to betray him.	He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.	(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
