The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai: " |
"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD. | 2Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you enter the land I am giving you, the land will observe a Sabbath to the LORD. |
For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. | 3You may sow your field for six years, and you may prune your vineyard and gather its produce for six years. |
But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. | 4But there will be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land in the seventh year, a Sabbath to the LORD: you are not to sow your field or prune your vineyard. |
Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest. | 5You are not to reap what grows by itself from your crop, or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. It must be a year of complete rest for the land. |
Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you--for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, | 6Whatever the land produces during the Sabbath year can be food for you--for yourself, your male or female slave, and the hired hand or foreigner who stays with you. |
as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten. | 7All of its growth may serve as food for your livestock and the wild animals in your land." |
"'Count off seven sabbath years--seven times seven years--so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. | 8You are to count seven sabbatical years, seven times seven years, so that the time period of the seven sabbatical years amounts to 49. |
Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. | 9Then you are to sound a trumpet loudly in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month; you will sound it throughout your land on the Day of Atonement. |
Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan. | 10You are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all its inhabitants. It will be your Jubilee, when each of you is to return to his property and each of you to his clan. |
The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines. | 11The fiftieth year will be your Jubilee; you are not to sow, reap what grows by itself, or harvest its untended vines. |
For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields. | 12It is to be holy to you because it is the Jubilee; you may only eat its produce directly from the field." |
"'In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to their own property. | 13In this Year of Jubilee, each of you will return to his property. |
"'If you sell land to any of your own people or buy land from them, do not take advantage of each other. | 14If you make a sale to your neighbor or a purchase from him, do not cheat one another. |
You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. | 15You are to make the purchase from your neighbor based on the number of years since the last Jubilee. He is to sell to you based on the number of remaining harvest years. |
When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. | 16You are to increase its price in proportion to a greater amount of years, and decrease its price in proportion to a lesser amount of years, because what he is selling to you is a number of harvests. |
Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God. | 17You are not to cheat one another, but fear your God, for I am Yahweh your God." |
"'Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. | 18You are to keep My statutes and ordinances and carefully observe them, so that you may live securely in the land. |
Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. | 19Then the land will yield its fruit, so that you can eat, be satisfied, and live securely in the land. |
You may ask, "What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?" | 20If you wonder: 'What will we eat in the seventh year if we don't sow or gather our produce?' |
I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. | 21I will appoint My blessing for you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years. |
While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in. | 22When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating from the previous harvest. You will be eating this until the ninth year when its harvest comes in." |
"'The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. | 23The land is not to be permanently sold because it is Mine, and you are only foreigners and temporary residents on My land. |
Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land. | 24You are to allow the redemption of any land you occupy. |
"'If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold. | 25If your brother becomes destitute and sells part of his property, his nearest relative may come and redeem what his brother has sold. |
If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, | 26If a man has no family redeemer, but he prospers and obtains enough to redeem his land, |
they are to determine the value for the years since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property. | 27he may calculate the years since its sale, repay the balance to the man he sold it to, and return to his property. |
But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property. | 28But if he cannot obtain enough to repay him, what he sold will remain in the possession of its purchaser until the Year of Jubilee. It is to be released at the Jubilee, so that he may return to his property." |
"'Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. | 29If a man sells a residence in a walled city, his right of redemption will last until a year has passed after its sale; his right of redemption will last a year. |
If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer's descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. | 30If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the walled city is permanently transferred to its purchaser throughout his generations. It is not to be released on the Jubilee. |
But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee. | 31But houses in villages that have no walls around them are to be classified as open fields. The right to redeem such houses stays in effect, and they are to be released at the Jubilee." |
"'The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which they possess. | 32Concerning the Levitical cities, the Levites always have the right to redeem houses in the cities they possess. |
So the property of the Levites is redeemable--that is, a house sold in any town they hold--and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. | 33Whatever property one of the Levites can redeem--a house sold in a city they possess--must be released at the Jubilee, because the houses in the Levitical cities are their possession among the Israelites. |
But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession. | 34The open pastureland around their cities may not be sold, for it is their permanent possession." |
"'If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. | 35If your brother becomes destitute and cannot sustain himself among you, you are to support him as a foreigner or temporary resident, so that he can continue to live among you. |
Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you. | 36Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you. |
You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit. | 37You are not to lend him your silver with interest or sell him your food for profit. |
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God. | 38I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God." |
"'If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. | 39If your brother among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, you must not force him to do slave labor. |
They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. | 40Let him stay with you as a hired hand or temporary resident; he may work for you until the Year of Jubilee. |
Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. | 41Then he and his children are to be released from you, and he may return to his clan and his ancestral property. |
Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. | 42They are not to be sold as slaves, because they are My slaves that I brought out of the land of Egypt. |
Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God. | 43You are not to rule over them harshly but fear your God. |
"'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. | 44Your male and female slaves are to be from the nations around you; you may purchase male and female slaves. |
You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. | 45You may also purchase them from the foreigners staying with you, or from their families living among you--those born in your land. These may become your property. |
You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly. | 46You may leave them to your sons after you to inherit as property; you can make them slaves for life. But concerning your brothers, the Israelites, you must not rule over one another harshly." |
"'If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner's clan, | 47If a foreigner or temporary resident living among you prospers, but your brother living near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the foreigner living among you, or to a member of the foreigner's clan, |
they retain the right of redemption after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives may redeem them: | 48he has the right of redemption after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him. |
An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper, they may redeem themselves. | 49His uncle or cousin may redeem him, or any of his close relatives from his clan may redeem him. If he prospers, he may redeem himself. |
They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker for that number of years. | 50The one who purchased him is to calculate the time from the year he sold himself to him until the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years. It will be set for him like the daily wages of a hired hand. |
If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. | 51If many years are still left, he must pay his redemption price in proportion to them based on his purchase price. |
If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly. | 52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, he will calculate and pay the price of his redemption in proportion to his remaining years. |
They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly. | 53He will stay with him like a man hired year by year. A foreign owner is not to rule over him harshly in your sight. |
"'Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, | 54If he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released at the Year of Jubilee. |
for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. | 55For the Israelites are My slaves. They are My slaves that I brought out of the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your God." |
