| 1The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, |
| 2"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD. | 2“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you, the land shall keep a Sabbath to the LORD. |
| 3For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. | 3For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, |
| 4But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. | 4but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the LORD. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. |
| 5Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest. | 5You shall not reap what grows of itself in your harvest, or gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. |
| 6Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you--for yourself, your male and female servants, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you, | 6The Sabbath of the land shall provide food for you, for yourself and for your male and female slaves and for your hired worker and the sojourner who lives with you, |
| 7as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten. | 7and for your cattle and for the wild animals that are in your land: all its yield shall be for food. |
| 8"'Count off seven sabbath years--seven times seven years--so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. | 8“You shall count seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, so that the time of the seven weeks of years shall give you forty-nine years. |
| 9Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. | 9Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. |
| 10Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. | 15You are to buy from your own people on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And they are to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops. | 15You shall pay your neighbor according to the number of years after the jubilee, and he shall sell to you according to the number of years for crops. |
| 16When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, because what is really being sold to you is the number of crops. | 16If the years are many, you shall increase the price, and if the years are few, you shall reduce the price, for it is the number of the crops that he is selling to you. |
| 17Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God. | 17You shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God, for I am the LORD your God. |
| 18"'Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. | 18“Therefore you shall do my statutes and keep my rules and perform them, and then you will dwell in the land securely. |
| 19Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. | 19The land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and dwell in it securely. |
| 20You may ask, "What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?" | 20And if you say, ‘What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we may not sow or gather in our crop?’ |
| 21I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. | 21I will command my blessing on you in the sixth year, so that it will produce a crop sufficient for three years. |
| 22While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in. | 22When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating some of the old crop; you shall eat the old until the ninth year, when its crop arrives. |
| 23"'The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. | 23“The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me. |
| 24Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land. | 24And in all the country you possess, you shall allow a redemption of the land. |
| 25"'If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold. | 25“If your brother becomes poor and sells part of his property, then his nearest redeemer shall come and redeem what his brother has sold. |
| 26If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, | 26If a man has no one to redeem it and then himself becomes prosperous and finds sufficient means to redeem it, |
| 27they are to determine the value for the years since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property. | 27let him calculate the years since he sold it and pay back the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and then return to his property. |
| 28But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property. | 28But if he does not have sufficient means to recover it, then what he sold shall remain in the hand of the buyer until the year of jubilee. In the jubilee it shall be released, and he shall return to his property. |
| 29"'Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. | 29“If a man sells a dwelling house in a walled city, he may redeem it within a year of its sale. For a full year he shall have the right of redemption. |
| 30If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer's descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. | 30If it is not redeemed within a full year, then the house in the walled city shall belong in perpetuity to the buyer, throughout his generations; it shall not be released in the jubilee. |
| 31But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee. | 31But the houses of the villages that have no wall around them shall be classified with the fields of the land. They may be redeemed, and they shall be released in the jubilee. |
| 32"'The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which they possess. | 32As for the cities of the Levites, the Levites may redeem at any time the houses in the cities they possess. |
| 33So the property of the Levites is redeemable--that is, a house sold in any town they hold--and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. | 33And if one of the Levites exercises his right of redemption, then the house that was sold in a city they possess shall be released in the jubilee. For the houses in the cities of the Levites are their possession among the people of Israel. |
| 34But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession. | 34But the fields of pastureland belonging to their cities may not be sold, for that is their possession forever. |
| 35"'If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. | 35“If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. |
| 36Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you. | 36Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you. |
| 37You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit. | 37You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. |
| 38I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God. | 38I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God. |
| 39"'If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. | 39“If your brother becomes poor beside you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave: |
| 40They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. | 40he shall be with you as a hired worker and as a sojourner. He shall serve with you until the year of the jubilee. |
| 41Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. | 41Then he shall go out from you, he and his children with him, and go back to his own clan and return to the possession of his fathers. |
| 42Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. | 42For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves. |
| 43Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God. | 43You shall not rule over him ruthlessly but shall fear your God. |
| 44"'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. | 44As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. |
| 45You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. | 45You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. |
| 46You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly. | 46You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly. |
| 47"'If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner's clan, | 47“If a stranger or sojourner with you becomes rich, and your brother beside him becomes poor and sells himself to the stranger or sojourner with you or to a member of the stranger’s clan, |
| 48they retain the right of redemption after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives may redeem them: | 48then after he is sold he may be redeemed. One of his brothers may redeem him, |
| 49An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper, they may redeem themselves. | 49or his uncle or his cousin may redeem him, or a close relative from his clan may redeem him. Or if he grows rich he may redeem himself. |
| 50They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker for that number of years. | 50He shall calculate with his buyer from the year when he sold himself to him until the year of jubilee, and the price of his sale shall vary with the number of years. The time he was with his owner shall be rated as the time of a hired worker. |
| 51If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. | 51If there are still many years left, he shall pay proportionately for his redemption some of his sale price. |
| 52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly. | 52If there remain but a few years until the year of jubilee, he shall calculate and pay for his redemption in proportion to his years of service. |
| 53They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly. | 53He shall treat him as a worker hired year by year. He shall not rule ruthlessly over him in your sight. |
| 54"'Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, | 54And if he is not redeemed by these means, then he and his children with him shall be released in the year of jubilee. |
| 55for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. | 55For it is to me that the people of Israel are servants. They are my servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. |
