The Day of Atonement
(Leviticus 23:26–32; Numbers 29:7–11)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר (And spoke) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) מ֔וֹת (the death) שְׁנֵ֖י (of the two) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) אַהֲרֹ֑ן (of Aaron), בְּקָרְבָתָ֥ם (when they drew near) לִפְנֵי־ (before the face) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) וַיָּמֻֽתוּ׃ (and they died). 2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), דַּבֵּר֮ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֣ן (Aaron) אָחִיךָ֒ (your brother), וְאַל־ (and not) יָבֹ֤א (he shall come in) בְכָל־ (at any) עֵת֙ (time) אֶל־ (to) הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ (the Holy Place) מִבֵּ֖ית (inside) לַפָּרֹ֑כֶת (the veil) אֶל־ (before) פְּנֵ֨י (the face) הַכַּפֹּ֜רֶת (of the mercy seat) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that is) עַל־ (on) הָאָרֹן֙ (the ark), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָמ֔וּת (he will die); כִּ֚י (for) בֶּֽעָנָ֔ן (in the cloud) אֵרָאֶ֖ה (I appear) עַל־ (above) הַכַּפֹּֽרֶת׃ (the mercy seat).

3  בְּזֹ֛את (In this way) יָבֹ֥א (shall come) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron) אֶל־ (to) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (the Holy Place) בְּפַ֧ר (with a bull), בֶּן־ (a son) בָּקָ֛ר (of the herd) לְחַטָּ֖את (for a sin offering), וְאַ֥יִל (and a ram) לְעֹלָֽה׃ (for a burnt offering). 4  כְּתֹֽנֶת־ (The tunic) בַּ֨ד (linen) קֹ֜דֶשׁ (holy) יִלְבָּ֗שׁ (he shall put on), וּמִֽכְנְסֵי־ (and the undergarments) בַד֮ (linen) יִהְי֣וּ (he shall have) עַל־ (on) בְּשָׂרוֹ֒ (his flesh), וּבְאַבְנֵ֥ט (and with a sash) בַּד֙ (linen) יַחְגֹּ֔ר (he shall gird himself) וּבְמִצְנֶ֥פֶת (and with the turban) בַּ֖ד (linen) יִצְנֹ֑ף (he shall wrap himself); בִּגְדֵי־ (garments) קֹ֣דֶשׁ (holy) הֵ֔ם (these are). וְרָחַ֥ץ (And he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֛יִם (in the water) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂר֖וֹ (his flesh) וּלְבֵשָֽׁם׃ (and he shall put them on). 5  וּמֵאֵ֗ת (And from) עֲדַת֙ (the congregation) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) יִקַּ֛ח (he shall take) שְׁנֵֽי־ (two) שְׂעִירֵ֥י (kids) עִזִּ֖ים (of the goats) לְחַטָּ֑את (for a sin offering), וְאַ֥יִל (and ram) אֶחָ֖ד (one) לְעֹלָֽה׃ (for a burnt offering).

6  וְהִקְרִ֧יב (And shall bring near) אַהֲרֹ֛ן (Aaron) אֶת־ (-) פַּ֥ר (the bull) הַחַטָּ֖את (of the sin offering), אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) ל֑וֹ (for himself), וְכִפֶּ֥ר (and he shall make atonement) בַּעֲד֖וֹ (on behalf of himself) וּבְעַ֥ד (and on behalf of) בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ (his house). 7  וְלָקַ֖ח (And he shall take) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵ֣י (two) הַשְּׂעִירִ֑ם (the goats) וְהֶעֱמִ֤יד (and he shall present) אֹתָם֙ (them) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) פֶּ֖תַח (at the door) אֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting).

8  וְנָתַ֧ן (And shall give) אַהֲרֹ֛ן (Aaron) עַל־ (upon) שְׁנֵ֥י (two) הַשְּׂעִירִ֖ם (the goats) גּוֹרָל֑וֹת (lots), גּוֹרָ֤ל (lot) אֶחָד֙ (one) לַיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH) וְגוֹרָ֥ל (and lot) אֶחָ֖ד (one) לַעֲזָאזֵֽל׃ (for Azazel). 9  וְהִקְרִ֤יב (And shall bring near) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂעִ֔יר (the goat) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָלָ֥ה (came up) עָלָ֛יו (on it) הַגּוֹרָ֖ל (the lot) לַיהוָ֑ה (for YHWH), וְעָשָׂ֖הוּ (and he shall do it) חַטָּֽאת׃ (as a sin offering). 10  וְהַשָּׂעִ֗יר (And the goat) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) עָלָ֨ה (came up) עָלָ֤יו (on it) הַגּוֹרָל֙ (the lot) לַעֲזָאזֵ֔ל (for Azazel) יָֽעֳמַד־ (shall be presented) חַ֛י (alive) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְכַפֵּ֣ר (to make atonement) עָלָ֑יו (upon it) לְשַׁלַּ֥ח (to send away) אֹת֛וֹ (it) לַעֲזָאזֵ֖ל (to Azazel) הַמִּדְבָּֽרָה׃ (into the wilderness).

11  וְהִקְרִ֨יב (And shall bring near) אַהֲרֹ֜ן (Aaron) אֶת־ (-) פַּ֤ר (the bull) הַֽחַטָּאת֙ (of the sin offering) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) ל֔וֹ (for himself), וְכִפֶּ֥ר (and he shall make atonement) בַּֽעֲד֖וֹ (on behalf of himself) וּבְעַ֣ד (and on behalf of) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house), וְשָׁחַ֛ט (and he shall slaughter) אֶת־ (-) פַּ֥ר (the bull) הַֽחַטָּ֖את (of the sin offering) אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) לֽוֹ׃ (for himself). 12  וְלָקַ֣ח (And he shall take) מְלֹֽא־ (the fullness) הַ֠מַּחְתָּה (of the firepan) גַּֽחֲלֵי־ (of burning coals) אֵ֞שׁ (of fire) מֵעַ֤ל (from on) הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ (the altar) מִלִּפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וּמְלֹ֣א (and the fullness) חָפְנָ֔יו (of his handfuls) קְטֹ֥רֶת (incense) סַמִּ֖ים (of spices) דַּקָּ֑ה (fine), וְהֵבִ֖יא (and he shall bring it) מִבֵּ֥ית (inside) לַפָּרֹֽכֶת׃ (the veil). 13  וְנָתַ֧ן (And he shall put) אֶֽת־ (-) הַקְּטֹ֛רֶת (the incense) עַל־ (on) הָאֵ֖שׁ (the fire) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְכִסָּ֣ה׀ (and shall cover) עֲנַ֣ן (the cloud) הַקְּטֹ֗רֶת (of incense) אֶת־ (-) הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת (the mercy seat) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) עַל־ (on) הָעֵד֖וּת (the Testimony), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יָמֽוּת׃ (he will die). 14  וְלָקַח֙ (And he shall take) מִדַּ֣ם (from the blood) הַפָּ֔ר (the bull) וְהִזָּ֧ה (and he shall sprinkle it) בְאֶצְבָּע֛וֹ (with his finger) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הַכַּפֹּ֖רֶת (of the mercy seat) קֵ֑דְמָה (on the east side); וְלִפְנֵ֣י (and before the face) הַכַּפֹּ֗רֶת (of the mercy seat) יַזֶּ֧ה (he shall sprinkle) שֶֽׁבַע־ (seven) פְּעָמִ֛ים (times) מִן־ (from) הַדָּ֖ם (the blood) בְּאֶצְבָּעֽוֹ׃ (with his finger).

15  וְשָׁחַ֞ט (And he shall slaughter) אֶת־ (-) שְׂעִ֤יר (the goat) הַֽחַטָּאת֙ (of the sin offering), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) לָעָ֔ם (for the people), וְהֵבִיא֙ (and he shall bring) אֶת־ (-) דָּמ֔וֹ (its blood) אֶל־ (to) מִבֵּ֖ית (the inside) לַפָּרֹ֑כֶת (of the veil), וְעָשָׂ֣ה (and he shall do) אֶת־ (with) דָּמ֗וֹ (its blood) כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (as) עָשָׂה֙ (he did) לְדַ֣ם (with the blood) הַפָּ֔ר (of the bull), וְהִזָּ֥ה (and he shall sprinkle) אֹת֛וֹ (it) עַל־ (on) הַכַּפֹּ֖רֶת (the mercy seat), וְלִפְנֵ֥י (and before the face) הַכַּפֹּֽרֶת׃ (of the mercy seat).

16  וְכִפֶּ֣ר (And he shall make atonement) עַל־ (upon) הַקֹּ֗דֶשׁ (the Holy Place) מִטֻּמְאֹת֙ (from the uncleannesses) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וּמִפִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֖ם (and from their transgressions) לְכָל־ (for all) חַטֹּאתָ֑ם (their sins); וְכֵ֤ן (and thus) יַעֲשֶׂה֙ (he shall do) לְאֹ֣הֶל (for the Tent) מוֹעֵ֔ד (of Meeting), הַשֹּׁכֵ֣ן (the one dwelling) אִתָּ֔ם (with them) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) טֻמְאֹתָֽם׃ (of their uncleannesses). 17  וְכָל־ (And any) אָדָ֞ם (man) לֹא־ (not) יִהְיֶ֣ה׀ (shall be) בְּאֹ֣הֶל (in the Tent) מוֹעֵ֗ד (of Meeting) בְּבֹא֛וֹ (when he goes in) לְכַפֵּ֥ר (to make atonement) בַּקֹּ֖דֶשׁ (in the Holy Place), עַד־ (until) צֵאת֑וֹ (he comes out), וְכִפֶּ֤ר (and he may make atonement) בַּעֲדוֹ֙ (on behalf of himself) וּבְעַ֣ד (and on behalf of) בֵּית֔וֹ (his house), וּבְעַ֖ד (and on behalf of) כָּל־ (all) קְהַ֥ל (the assembly) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

18  וְיָצָ֗א (And he shall go out) אֶל־ (to) הַמִּזְבֵּ֛חַ (the altar) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) לִפְנֵֽי־ (before the face) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) וְכִפֶּ֣ר (and he shall make atonement) עָלָ֑יו (upon it); וְלָקַ֞ח (and he shall take) מִדַּ֤ם (from the blood) הַפָּר֙ (of the bull), וּמִדַּ֣ם (and from the blood) הַשָּׂעִ֔יר (of the goat), וְנָתַ֛ן (and he shall put it) עַל־ (on) קַרְנ֥וֹת (the horns) הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (of the altar) סָבִֽיב׃ (all around). 19  וְהִזָּ֨ה (And he shall sprinkle) עָלָ֧יו (on it) מִן־ (from) הַדָּ֛ם (of the blood) בְּאֶצְבָּע֖וֹ (with his finger) שֶׁ֣בַע (seven) פְּעָמִ֑ים (times), וְטִהֲר֣וֹ (and he shall cleanse it) וְקִדְּשׁ֔וֹ (and he shall sanctify it) מִטֻּמְאֹ֖ת (from the uncleannesses) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

20  וְכִלָּה֙ (And he shall finish) מִכַּפֵּ֣ר (from making atonement) אֶת־ (-) הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ (upon the Holy Place) וְאֶת־ (and) אֹ֥הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֖ד (of Meeting), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (the altar), וְהִקְרִ֖יב (and he shall bring near) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂעִ֥יר (the goat) הֶחָֽי׃ (living). 21  וְסָמַ֨ךְ (And shall lay) אַהֲרֹ֜ן (Aaron) אֶת־ (-) שְׁתֵּ֣י (his two) יָדוֹ (hands) עַ֨ל (on) רֹ֣אשׁ (the head) הַשָּׂעִיר֮ (of the goat) הַחַי֒ (living), וְהִתְוַדָּ֣ה (and he shall confess) עָלָ֗יו (over it) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עֲוֺנֹת֙ (the iniquities) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) פִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֖ם (their transgressions) לְכָל־ (for all) חַטֹּאתָ֑ם (their sins), וְנָתַ֤ן (and he shall put) אֹתָם֙ (them) עַל־ (on) רֹ֣אשׁ (the head) הַשָּׂעִ֔יר (of the goat) וְשִׁלַּ֛ח (and he shall send it away) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) אִ֥ישׁ (of a man) עִתִּ֖י (suitable) הַמִּדְבָּֽרָה׃ (into the wilderness). 22  וְנָשָׂ֨א (And shall carry) הַשָּׂעִ֥יר (the goat) עָלָ֛יו (on itself) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) עֲוֺנֹתָ֖ם (their iniquities), אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) גְּזֵרָ֑ה (inaccessible); וְשִׁלַּ֥ח (and he shall send away) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂעִ֖יר (the goat) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (into the wilderness).

23  וּבָ֤א (And shall come) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) אֶל־ (into) אֹ֣הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֔ד (of Meeting), וּפָשַׁט֙ (and he shall take off) אֶת־ (-) בִּגְדֵ֣י (the garments) הַבָּ֔ד (linen) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לָבַ֖שׁ (he put on) בְּבֹא֣וֹ (when he went) אֶל־ (into) הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (the Holy Place), וְהִנִּיחָ֖ם (and he shall leave them) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 24  וְרָחַ֨ץ (And he shall bathe) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂר֤וֹ (his flesh) בַמַּ֙יִם֙ (with the water) בְּמָק֣וֹם (in a place) קָד֔וֹשׁ (holy), וְלָבַ֖שׁ (and he shall put on) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדָ֑יו (his garments), וְיָצָ֗א (and he shall come out), וְעָשָׂ֤ה (and he shall do) אֶת־ (-) עֹֽלָתוֹ֙ (his burnt offering) וְאֶת־ (and) עֹלַ֣ת (the burnt offering) הָעָ֔ם (of the people), וְכִפֶּ֥ר (and he shall make atonement) בַּעֲד֖וֹ (on behalf of himself) וּבְעַ֥ד (and on behalf of) הָעָֽם׃ (the people). 25  וְאֵ֛ת (And) חֵ֥לֶב (the fat) הַֽחַטָּ֖את (of the sin offering) יַקְטִ֥יר (he shall burn) הַמִּזְבֵּֽחָה׃ (on the altar).

26  וְהַֽמְשַׁלֵּ֤חַ (And the one sending away) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׂעִיר֙ (the goat) לַֽעֲזָאזֵ֔ל (to Azazel) יְכַבֵּ֣ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֔יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂר֖וֹ (his flesh) בַּמָּ֑יִם (in the water), וְאַחֲרֵי־ (and) כֵ֖ן (afterward) יָב֥וֹא (he shall come) אֶל־ (into) הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (the camp).

27  וְאֵת֩ (And) פַּ֨ר (the bull) הַֽחַטָּ֜את (of the sin offering), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) שְׂעִ֣יר (the goat) הַֽחַטָּ֗את (of the sin offering), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whose) הוּבָ֤א (was brought in) אֶת־ (-) דָּמָם֙ (blood) לְכַפֵּ֣ר (to make atonement) בַּקֹּ֔דֶשׁ (in the Holy Place), יוֹצִ֖יא (shall be brought out) אֶל־ (to) מִח֣וּץ (the outside) לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (of the camp); וְשָׂרְפ֣וּ (and they shall burn) בָאֵ֔שׁ (in the fire) אֶת־ (-) עֹרֹתָ֥ם (their skins), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּשָׂרָ֖ם (their flesh), וְאֶת־ (and) פִּרְשָֽׁם׃ (their dung). 28  וְהַשֹּׂרֵ֣ף (And the one burning) אֹתָ֔ם (them) יְכַבֵּ֣ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֔יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂר֖וֹ (his flesh) בַּמָּ֑יִם (in the water), וְאַחֲרֵי־ (and) כֵ֖ן (afterward) יָב֥וֹא (he shall come) אֶל־ (into) הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (the camp).

29  וְהָיְתָ֥ה (And it shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (for you⁺) לְחֻקַּ֣ת (a statute) עוֹלָ֑ם (everlasting): בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ (In the month) הַ֠שְּׁבִיעִי (the seventh) בֶּֽעָשׂ֨וֹר (on the tenth) לַחֹ֜דֶשׁ (of the month), תְּעַנּ֣וּ (you⁺ shall afflict) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ souls), וְכָל־ (and any) מְלָאכָה֙ (work) לֹ֣א (not) תַעֲשׂ֔וּ (you⁺ shall do), הָֽאֶזְרָ֔ח (the native), וְהַגֵּ֖ר (and the sojourner) הַגָּ֥ר (who is sojourning) בְּתוֹכְכֶֽם׃ (in your⁺ midst). 30  כִּֽי־ (For) בַיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַזֶּ֛ה (this), יְכַפֵּ֥ר (he shall make atonement) עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (upon you⁺) לְטַהֵ֣ר (to cleanse) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺) מִכֹּל֙ (from all) חַטֹּ֣אתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ sins) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), תִּטְהָֽרוּ׃ (and you⁺ shall be clean). 31  שַׁבַּ֨ת (A Sabbath) שַׁבָּת֥וֹן (of complete rest) הִיא֙ (it is) לָכֶ֔ם (for you⁺), וְעִנִּיתֶ֖ם (and you⁺ shall afflict) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ souls); חֻקַּ֖ת (it is statute) עוֹלָֽם׃ (everlasting).

32  וְכִפֶּ֨ר (And shall make atonement) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יִמְשַׁ֣ח (he anoints) אֹת֗וֹ (-) וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and whom) יְמַלֵּא֙ (he fills) אֶת־ (-) יָד֔וֹ (his hand) לְכַהֵ֖ן (to minister as priest) תַּ֣חַת (in place) אָבִ֑יו (of his father), וְלָבַ֛שׁ (and he shall put on) אֶת־ (-) בִּגְדֵ֥י (the garments) הַבָּ֖ד (linen), בִּגְדֵ֥י (the garments) הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃ (holy). 33  וְכִפֶּר֙ (And he shall make atonement) אֶת־ (-) מִקְדַּ֣שׁ (upon the Sanctuary) הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ (of Holiness), וְאֶת־ (and) אֹ֧הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֛ד (of Meeting), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (upon the altar) יְכַפֵּ֑ר (he shall make atonement); וְעַ֧ל (and upon) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (the priests), וְעַל־ (and upon) כָּל־ (all) עַ֥ם (the people) הַקָּהָ֖ל (of the assembly) יְכַפֵּֽר׃ (he shall make atonement). 34  וְהָֽיְתָה־ (And shall be) זֹּ֨את (this) לָכֶ֜ם (for you⁺) לְחֻקַּ֣ת (a statute) עוֹלָ֗ם (everlasting), לְכַפֵּ֞ר (to make atonement) עַל־ (upon) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), מִכָּל־ (from all) חַטֹּאתָ֔ם (their sins) אַחַ֖ת (once) בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה (in the year).

וַיַּ֕עַשׂ (And he did) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶֽׁה׃פ (Moses).
