The Uncleanness of Men
(Deuteronomy 23:9–14)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (unto) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) וְאֶֽל־ (and to) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  דַּבְּרוּ֙ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם (and you shall say) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them), אִ֣ישׁ (Any) אִ֗ישׁ (man) כִּ֤י (when) יִהְיֶה֙ (there is) זָ֣ב (a discharge) מִבְּשָׂר֔וֹ (from his flesh), זוֹב֖וֹ (his discharge) טָמֵ֥א (unclean) הֽוּא׃ (it is). 3  וְזֹ֛את (And this) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) טֻמְאָת֖וֹ (his uncleanness) בְּזוֹב֑וֹ (in regard to his discharge), רָ֣ר (whether runs) בְּשָׂר֞וֹ (his flesh) אֶת־ (with) זוֹב֗וֹ (his discharge), אֽוֹ־ (or) הֶחְתִּ֤ים (is stopped up) בְּשָׂרוֹ֙ (his flesh) מִזּוֹב֔וֹ (from his discharge); טֻמְאָת֖וֹ (his uncleanness) הִֽוא׃ (it is).

4  כָּל־ (Every) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ב (bed) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) יִשְׁכַּ֥ב (lies) עָלָ֛יו (on) הַזָּ֖ב (the one discharging) יִטְמָ֑א (is unclean), וְכָֽל־ (and every) הַכְּלִ֛י (vessel) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (he sits) עָלָ֖יו (on) יִטְמָֽא׃ (shall be unclean). 5  וְאִ֕ישׁ (And a man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יִגַּ֖ע (touches) בְּמִשְׁכָּב֑וֹ (his bed) יְכַבֵּ֧ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 6  וְהַיֹּשֵׁב֙ (And the one sitting) עַֽל־ (on) הַכְּלִ֔י (the vessel) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (sits) עָלָ֖יו (on) הַזָּ֑ב (the one discharging) יְכַבֵּ֧ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

7  וְהַנֹּגֵ֖עַ (And the one touching) בִּבְשַׂ֣ר (the flesh) הַזָּ֑ב (of the one discharging) יְכַבֵּ֧ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 8  וְכִֽי־ (And if) יָרֹ֛ק (spits) הַזָּ֖ב (the one discharging) בַּטָּה֑וֹר (on one who is clean), וְכִבֶּ֧ס (then he shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

9  וְכָל־ (And any) הַמֶּרְכָּ֗ב (saddle) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) יִרְכַּ֥ב (rides) עָלָ֛יו (on) הַזָּ֖ב (the one discharging) יִטְמָֽא׃ (shall be unclean). 10  וְכָל־ (And anyone) הַנֹּגֵ֗עַ (who touches) בְּכֹל֙ (anything) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יִהְיֶ֣ה (was) תַחְתָּ֔יו (under him) יִטְמָ֖א (shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָ֑רֶב (the evening), וְהַנּוֹשֵׂ֣א (and the one carrying) אוֹתָ֔ם (them) יְכַבֵּ֧ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

11  וְכֹ֨ל (And all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יִגַּע־ (touch) בּוֹ֙ (against) הַזָּ֔ב (the one discharging), וְיָדָ֖יו (and his hands) לֹא־ (not) שָׁטַ֣ף (he has rinsed) בַּמָּ֑יִם (in the water), וְכִבֶּ֧ס (then he shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 12  וּכְלִי־ (And the vessel) חֶ֛רֶשׂ (earthen) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִגַּע־ (touches) בּ֥וֹ (in it) הַזָּ֖ב (the one discharging), יִשָּׁבֵ֑ר (shall be broken), וְכָל־ (and every) כְּלִי־ (vessel) עֵ֔ץ (of wood) יִשָּׁטֵ֖ף (shall be rinsed) בַּמָּֽיִם׃ (in the water).

The Cleansing of Men

13  וְכִֽי־ (And when) יִטְהַ֤ר (is clean) הַזָּב֙ (the one discharging) מִזּוֹב֔וֹ (from his discharge), וְסָ֨פַר (and he shall count) ל֜וֹ (for himself) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִ֛ים (days) לְטָהֳרָת֖וֹ (for his cleansing), וְכִבֶּ֣ס (and he shall wash) בְּגָדָ֑יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֧ץ (and he shall bathe) בְּשָׂר֛וֹ (his flesh) בְּמַ֥יִם (in water) חַיִּ֖ים (living), וְטָהֵֽר׃ (and he shall be clean). 14  וּבַיּ֣וֹם (And on the day) הַשְּׁמִינִ֗י (the eighth) יִֽקַּֽח־ (he shall take) לוֹ֙ (for himself) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) תֹרִ֔ים (turtledoves), א֥וֹ (or) שְׁנֵ֖י (two) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) יוֹנָ֑ה (of a pigeon), וּבָ֣א׀ (and he shall come) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) פֶּ֙תַח֙ (the door) אֹ֣הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵ֔ד (of Meeting), וּנְתָנָ֖ם (and he shall give them) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (the priest). 15  וְעָשָׂ֤ה (And shall do) אֹתָם֙ (them) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), אֶחָ֣ד (one) חַטָּ֔את (as a sin offering), וְהָאֶחָ֖ד (and the one) עֹלָ֑ה (as a burnt offering). וְכִפֶּ֨ר (And shall make atonement) עָלָ֧יו (upon him) הַכֹּהֵ֛ן (the priest) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) מִזּוֹבֽוֹ׃ס (from his discharge).

16  וְאִ֕ישׁ (And a man) כִּֽי־ (if) תֵצֵ֥א (goes out) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (from him) שִׁכְבַת־ (from lying) זָ֑רַע (a seed), וְרָחַ֥ץ (then he shall wash) בַּמַּ֛יִם (in the water); אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בְּשָׂר֖וֹ (his flesh) וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 17  וְכָל־ (And every) בֶּ֣גֶד (garment) וְכָל־ (and every) ע֔וֹר (skin) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there is) עָלָ֖יו (on) שִׁכְבַת־ (from lying) זָ֑רַע (a seed), וְכֻבַּ֥ס (and it shall be washed) בַּמַּ֖יִם (with the water) וְטָמֵ֥א (and it shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃פ (the evening). 18  וְאִשָּׁ֕ה (And a woman) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִשְׁכַּ֥ב (lies) אִ֛ישׁ (a man) אֹתָ֖הּ (with her) שִׁכְבַת־ (and there is from lying) זָ֑רַע (a seed), וְרָחֲצ֣וּ (then they shall bathe) בַמַּ֔יִם (in the water) וְטָמְא֖וּ (and they be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

The Uncleanness of Women

19  וְאִשָּׁה֙ (And a woman) כִּֽי־ (when) תִהְיֶ֣ה (she is) זָבָ֔ה (discharging) דָּ֛ם (of blood), יִהְיֶ֥ה (consisting) זֹבָ֖הּ (her discharge) בִּבְשָׂרָ֑הּ (from her flesh), שִׁבְעַ֤ת (seven) יָמִים֙ (days) תִּהְיֶ֣ה (she shall be) בְנִדָּתָ֔הּ (in her menstruation), וְכָל־ (and anyone) הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ (who touches) בָּ֖הּ (her) יִטְמָ֥א (shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 20  וְכֹל֩ (And everything) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) תִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (she lies) עָלָ֛יו (on) בְּנִדָּתָ֖הּ (in her menstruation) יִטְמָ֑א (shall be unclean), וְכֹ֛ל (and everything) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) תֵּשֵׁ֥ב (she sits) עָלָ֖יו (on) יִטְמָֽא׃ (shall be unclean). 21  וְכָל־ (And anyone) הַנֹּגֵ֖עַ (who touches) בְּמִשְׁכָּבָ֑הּ (her bed) יְכַבֵּ֧ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

22  וְכָל־ (And anyone) הַנֹּגֵ֔עַ (who touches) בְּכָל־ (any) כְּלִ֖י (vessel) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) תֵּשֵׁ֣ב (she sits) עָלָ֑יו (on) יְכַבֵּ֧ס (shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 23  וְאִ֨ם (And if) עַֽל־ (on) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֜ב (the bed) ה֗וּא (it is), א֧וֹ (or) עַֽל־ (on) הַכְּלִ֛י (the vessel) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הִ֥וא (she) יֹשֶֽׁבֶת־ (sits) עָלָ֖יו (upon), בְּנָגְעוֹ־ (in his touching) ב֑וֹ (it), יִטְמָ֖א (he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

24  וְאִ֡ם (And if) שָׁכֹב֩ (lying) יִשְׁכַּ֨ב (he lies) אִ֜ישׁ (any man) אֹתָ֗הּ (with her), וּתְהִ֤י (and is) נִדָּתָהּ֙ (her menstruation) עָלָ֔יו (on him), וְטָמֵ֖א (and he shall be unclean) שִׁבְעַ֣ת (seven) יָמִ֑ים (days); וְכָל־ (and every) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֛ב (bed) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִשְׁכַּ֥ב (he lies) עָלָ֖יו (upon) יִטְמָֽא׃פ (shall be unclean).

25  וְאִשָּׁ֡ה (And a woman) כִּֽי־ (when) יָזוּב֩ (her discharge) ז֨וֹב (is a discharge) דָּמָ֜הּ (of her blood) יָמִ֣ים (days) רַבִּ֗ים (for many) בְּלֹא֙ (not in) עֶת־ (the time) נִדָּתָ֔הּ (of her menstruation), א֥וֹ (or) כִֽי־ (if) תָז֖וּב (she discharges) עַל־ (beyond) נִדָּתָ֑הּ (her menstruation), כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֞י (the days) ז֣וֹב (of the discharge) טֻמְאָתָ֗הּ (of her uncleanness) כִּימֵ֧י (like the days) נִדָּתָ֛הּ (of her menstruation), תִּהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) טְמֵאָ֥ה (unclean) הִֽוא׃ (she is). 26  כָּל־ (Every) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֞ב (bed) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) תִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (she lies) עָלָיו֙ (on) כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) זוֹבָ֔הּ (of her discharge), כְּמִשְׁכַּ֥ב (like the bed) נִדָּתָ֖הּ (of her menstruation) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) לָּ֑הּ (to her); וְכָֽל־ (and every) הַכְּלִי֙ (vessel) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) תֵּשֵׁ֣ב (she sits) עָלָ֔יו (on), טָמֵ֣א (unclean) יִהְיֶ֔ה (shall be) כְּטֻמְאַ֖ת (like the uncleanness) נִדָּתָֽהּ׃ (of her menstruation). 27  וְכָל־ (And anyone) הַנּוֹגֵ֥עַ (who touches) בָּ֖ם (them) יִטְמָ֑א (shall be unclean), וְכִבֶּ֧ס (and he shall wash) בְּגָדָ֛יו (his clothes), וְרָחַ֥ץ (and he shall bathe) בַּמַּ֖יִם (in the water), וְטָמֵ֥א (and he shall be unclean) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening).

The Cleansing of Women

28  וְאִֽם־ (And if) טָהֲרָ֖ה (she is clean) מִזּוֹבָ֑הּ (from her discharge), וְסָ֥פְרָה (then she shall count) לָּ֛הּ (for herself) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִ֖ים (days), וְאַחַ֥ר (and afterward) תִּטְהָֽר׃ (she shall be clean). 29  וּבַיּ֣וֹם (And on the day) הַשְּׁמִינִ֗י (the eighth) תִּֽקַּֽח־ (she shall take) לָהּ֙ (for herself) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) תֹרִ֔ים (turtledoves), א֥וֹ (or) שְׁנֵ֖י (two) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) יוֹנָ֑ה (of a pigeon), וְהֵבִיאָ֤ה (and she shall bring) אוֹתָם֙ (them) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), אֶל־ (to) פֶּ֖תַח (the door) אֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting). 30  וְעָשָׂ֤ה (And shall do) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) אֶת־ (-) הָאֶחָ֣ד (the one) חַטָּ֔את (as a sin offering), וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֶחָ֖ד (the one) עֹלָ֑ה (as a burnt offering); וְכִפֶּ֨ר (and shall make atonement) עָלֶ֤יהָ (upon her) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) מִזּ֖וֹב (from the discharge) טֻמְאָתָֽהּ׃ (of her uncleanness).

31  וְהִזַּרְתֶּ֥ם (And you⁺ shall separate) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) מִטֻּמְאָתָ֑ם (from their uncleanness), וְלֹ֤א (and not) יָמֻ֙תוּ֙ (shall they die) בְּטֻמְאָתָ֔ם (in their uncleanness) בְּטַמְּאָ֥ם (when they defile) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁכָּנִ֖י (My tabernacle) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ (in their midst).

32  זֹ֥את (This is) תּוֹרַ֖ת (the law) הַזָּ֑ב (of the one discharging), וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (and of the one whose) תֵּצֵ֥א (goes) מִמֶּ֛נּוּ (from him) שִׁכְבַת־ (from lying) זֶ֖רַע (seed) לְטָמְאָה־ (to be unclean) בָֽהּ׃ (by it), 33  וְהַדָּוָה֙ (and the menstruating woman) בְּנִדָּתָ֔הּ (in her menstruation), וְהַזָּב֙ (and the one discharging) אֶת־ (-) זוֹב֔וֹ (his discharge), לַזָּכָ֖ר (for the male) וְלַנְּקֵבָ֑ה (and for the female), וּלְאִ֕ישׁ (and for a man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יִשְׁכַּ֖ב (lies) עִם־ (with) טְמֵאָֽה׃פ (an unclean woman).
