The Death of Samuel

1  וַיָּ֣מָת (And died) שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל (Samuel), וַיִּקָּבְצ֤וּ (and gathered together) כָל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) וַיִּסְפְּדוּ־ (and lamented) ל֔וֹ (for him), וַיִּקְבְּרֻ֥הוּ (and they buried him) בְּבֵית֖וֹ (at his house) בָּרָמָ֑ה (in Ramah).

וַיָּ֣קָם (And arose) דָּוִ֔ד (David) וַיֵּ֖רֶד (and went down) אֶל־ (to) מִדְבַּ֥ר (the Wilderness) פָּארָֽן׃ס (of Paran).

David, Nabal, and Abigail

2  וְאִ֨ישׁ (And there was a man) בְּמָע֜וֹן (in Maon), וּמַעֲשֵׂ֣הוּ (and his work was) בַכַּרְמֶ֗ל (in Carmel). וְהָאִישׁ֙ (And the man was) גָּד֣וֹל (rich) מְאֹ֔ד (very), וְל֛וֹ (and He had) צֹ֥אן (sheep) שְׁלֹֽשֶׁת־ (three) אֲלָפִ֖ים (thousand), וְאֶ֣לֶף (and a thousand) עִזִּ֑ים (goats). וַיְהִ֛י (And he was) בִּגְזֹ֥ז (shearing) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנ֖וֹ (his sheep) בַּכַּרְמֶֽל׃ (in Carmel). 3  וְשֵׁ֤ם (And the name) הָאִישׁ֙ (of the man) נָבָ֔ל (was Nabal), וְשֵׁ֥ם (and the name) אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ (of his wife) אֲבִגָ֑יִל (Abigail). וְהָאִשָּׁ֤ה (And she was a woman) טֽוֹבַת־ (of good) שֶׂ֙כֶל֙ (understanding) וִ֣יפַת (and beautiful) תֹּ֔אַר (appearance), וְהָאִ֥ישׁ (and the man was) קָשֶׁ֛ה (harsh) וְרַ֥ע (and evil) מַעֲלָלִ֖ים (in his deeds); וְה֥וּא (and he was) כְלִבּוֹ׃ (a Calebite).

4  וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע (And heard) דָּוִ֖ד (David) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness) כִּֽי־ (that) גֹזֵ֥ז (was shearing) נָבָ֖ל (Nabal) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנֽוֹ׃ (his sheep). 5  וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח (And sent) דָּוִ֖ד (David) עֲשָׂרָ֣ה (ten) נְעָרִ֑ים (young men), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) דָּוִ֜ד (David) לַנְּעָרִ֗ים (to the young men), עֲל֤וּ (Go up) כַרְמֶ֙לָה֙ (to Carmel), וּבָאתֶ֣ם (and go) אֶל־ (to) נָבָ֔ל (Nabal), וּשְׁאֶלְתֶּם־ (and ask) ל֥וֹ (of him) בִשְׁמִ֖י (in my name) לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (of welfare). 6  וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֥ם (And you⁺ shall say) כֹּ֖ה (thus): לֶחָ֑י (To life)! וְאַתָּ֤ה (And to you) שָׁלוֹם֙ (peace), וּבֵיתְךָ֣ (and to your house) שָׁל֔וֹם (peace), וְכֹ֥ל (and to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) לְךָ֖ (unto you) שָׁלֽוֹם׃ (peace). 7  וְעַתָּ֣ה (And) שָׁמַ֔עְתִּי (I have heard) כִּ֥י (that) גֹזְזִ֖ים (shearers) לָ֑ךְ (are unto you). עַתָּ֗ה (Now) הָרֹעִ֤ים (the shepherds) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) לְךָ֙ (are unto you) הָי֣וּ (were) עִמָּ֔נוּ (with us). לֹ֣א (Not) הֶכְלַמְנ֗וּם (we did hurt them), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) נִפְקַ֤ד (was there missing) לָהֶם֙ (from them) מְא֔וּמָה (anything) כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֖י (the days) הֱיוֹתָ֥ם (they were) בַּכַּרְמֶֽל׃ (in Carmel). 8  שְׁאַ֨ל (Ask) אֶת־ (-) נְעָרֶ֜יךָ (your young men), וְיַגִּ֣ידוּ (and they will tell) לָ֗ךְ (you). וְיִמְצְא֨וּ (And let find) הַנְּעָרִ֥ים (my young men) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ (in your eyes), כִּֽי־ (for) עַל־ (on) י֥וֹם (a day) ט֖וֹב (good) בָּ֑נוּ (we come). תְּנָה־ (Give), נָּ֗א (please), אֵת֩ (-) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whatever) תִּמְצָ֤א (finds) יָֽדְךָ֙ (your hand) לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ (to your servants), וּלְבִנְךָ֖ (and to your son) לְדָוִֽד׃ (David).

9  וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (And came) נַעֲרֵ֣י (the young men) דָוִ֔ד (of David), וַיְדַבְּר֧וּ (and they spoke) אֶל־ (to) נָבָ֛ל (Nabal) כְּכָל־ (according to all) הַדְּבָרִ֥ים (the words) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (in the name) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), וַיָּנֽוּחוּ׃ (and they rested).

10  וַיַּ֨עַן (And answered) נָבָ֜ל (Nabal) אֶת־ (-) עַבְדֵ֤י (the servants) דָוִד֙ (of David), וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and said), מִ֥י (Who is) דָוִ֖ד (David)? וּמִ֣י (And who is) בֶן־ (the son) יִשָׁ֑י (of Jesse)? הַיּוֹם֙ (Today) רַבּ֣וּ (there are many) עֲבָדִ֔ים (servants) הַמִּתְפָּ֣רְצִ֔ים (who break away), אִ֖ישׁ (a man) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from the face) אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ (of his master). 11  וְלָקַחְתִּ֤י (And shall I take) אֶת־ (-) לַחְמִי֙ (my bread) וְאֶת־ (and) מֵימַ֔י (my water) וְאֵת֙ (and) טִבְחָתִ֔י (my flesh) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) טָבַ֖חְתִּי (I have killed) לְגֹֽזְזָ֑י (for my shearers), וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ (and give it) לַֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים (to men), אֲשֶׁר֙ (whom) לֹ֣א (not) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (I do know) אֵ֥י (from where) מִזֶּ֖ה (from) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they are).

12  וַיַּהַפְכ֥וּ (And turned) נַעֲרֵֽי־ (the young men) דָוִ֖ד (of David) לְדַרְכָּ֑ם (to their way), וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ (and went back), וַיָּבֹ֔אוּ (and they came) וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ (and declared) ל֔וֹ (to him) כְּכֹ֖ל (according to all) הַדְּבָרִ֥ים (the words) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these).

13  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) דָּוִ֨ד (David) לַאֲנָשָׁ֜יו (to his men), חִגְר֣וּ׀ (Gird on) אִ֣ישׁ (every man) אֶת־ (-) חַרְבּ֗וֹ (his sword). וַֽיַּחְגְּרוּ֙ (And girded on) אִ֣ישׁ (every man) אֶת־ (-) חַרְבּ֔וֹ (his sword), וַיַּחְגֹּ֥ר (and girded on) גַּם־ (also) דָּוִ֖ד (David) אֶת־ (-) חַרְבּ֑וֹ (his sword). וַֽיַּעֲל֣וּ׀ (And went) אַחֲרֵ֣י (with) דָוִ֗ד (David) כְּאַרְבַּ֤ע (about four) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) אִ֔ישׁ (men), וּמָאתַ֖יִם (and two hundred) יָשְׁב֥וּ (stayed) עַל־ (with) הַכֵּלִֽים׃ (the vessels).

14  וְלַאֲבִיגַ֙יִל֙ (And to Abigail) אֵ֣שֶׁת (wife) נָבָ֔ל (of Nabal) הִגִּ֧יד (declared) נַֽעַר־ (a young man), אֶחָ֛ד (one) מֵהַנְּעָרִ֖ים (of the young men), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), שָׁלַח֩ (sent) דָּוִ֨ד (David) מַלְאָכִ֧ים׀ (messengers) מֵֽהַמִּדְבָּ֛ר (from the wilderness) לְבָרֵ֥ךְ (to greet) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנֵ֖ינוּ (our master), וַיָּ֥עַט (and he reviled) בָּהֶֽם׃ (them). 15  וְהָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים (And the men were) טֹבִ֥ים (good) לָ֖נוּ (to us) מְאֹ֑ד (very), וְלֹ֤א (and not) הָכְלַ֙מְנוּ֙ (we were hurt), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) פָקַ֣דְנוּ (did we miss) מְא֔וּמָה (anything) כָּל־ (all) יְמֵי֙ (the days) הִתְהַלַּ֣כְנוּ (we accompanied) אִתָּ֔ם (them) בִּֽהְיוֹתֵ֖נוּ (when we were) בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (in the fields). 16  חוֹמָה֙ (A wall) הָי֣וּ (they were) עָלֵ֔ינוּ (for us), גַּם־ (both) לַ֖יְלָה (by night) גַּם־ (and) יוֹמָ֑ם (by day), כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֛י (the days) הֱיוֹתֵ֥נוּ (we were) עִמָּ֖ם (with them) רֹעִ֥ים (pasturing) הַצֹּֽאן׃ (the sheep). 17  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) דְּעִ֤י (know) וּרְאִי֙ (and consider) מַֽה־ (what) תַּעֲשִׂ֔י (you will do). כִּֽי־ (For) כָלְתָ֧ה (is determined) הָרָעָ֛ה (harm) אֶל־ (against) אֲדֹנֵ֖ינוּ (our master), וְעַ֣ל (and against) כָּל־ (all) בֵּית֑וֹ (his house). וְהוּא֙ (And he) בֶּן־ (is too much a son) בְּלִיַּ֔עַל (of worthlessness) מִדַּבֵּ֖ר (to speak) אֵלָֽיו׃ (to him).

Abigail Intercedes for Nabal

18  וַתְּמַהֵ֣ר (And hurried) אֲבוֹגַיִל (Abigail), וַתִּקַּח֩ (and took) מָאתַ֨יִם (two hundred) לֶ֜חֶם (loaves of bread), וּשְׁנַ֣יִם (and two) נִבְלֵי־ (skins) יַ֗יִן (of wine), וְחָמֵ֨שׁ (and five) צֹ֤אן (sheep) עֲשָׂווֹת (already dressed), וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) סְאִים֙ (seahs) קָלִ֔י (of roasted grain), וּמֵאָ֥ה (and a hundred) צִמֻּקִ֖ים (clusters of raisins), וּמָאתַ֣יִם (and two hundred) דְּבֵלִ֑ים (cakes of figs), וַתָּ֖שֶׂם (and she put them) עַל־ (on) הַחֲמֹרִֽים׃ (the donkeys). 19  וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (And she said) לִנְעָרֶ֙יהָ֙ (to her servants), עִבְר֣וּ (Go on) לְפָנַ֔י (before me). הִנְנִ֖י (Behold), אַחֲרֵיכֶ֣ם (after you⁺) בָּאָ֑ה (am coming). וּלְאִישָׁ֥הּ (And her husband) נָבָ֖ל (Nabal) לֹ֥א (not) הִגִּֽידָה׃ (she did tell).

20  וְהָיָ֞ה (And it came to pass) הִ֣יא׀ (as she) רֹכֶ֣בֶת (rode) עַֽל־ (on) הַחֲמ֗וֹר (the donkey), וְיֹרֶ֙דֶת֙ (that she went down) בְּסֵ֣תֶר (under cover) הָהָ֔ר (of the mountain), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold) דָוִד֙ (David) וַאֲנָשָׁ֔יו (and his men) יֹרְדִ֖ים (were coming down) לִקְרָאתָ֑הּ (toward her), וַתִּפְגֹּ֖שׁ (and she met) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

21  וְדָוִ֣ד (And David) אָמַ֗ר (had said), אַךְ֩ (Surely) לַשֶּׁ֨קֶר (in vain) שָׁמַ֜רְתִּי (I have kept) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) לָזֶה֙ (was unto this one) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness), וְלֹא־ (and nothing) נִפְקַ֥ד (was missed) מִכָּל־ (of all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ל֖וֹ (was unto him) מְא֑וּמָה (anything). וַיָּֽשֶׁב־ (And he has repaid) לִ֥י (me) רָעָ֖ה (evil) תַּ֥חַת (for) טוֹבָֽה׃ (good). 22  כֹּה־ (And) יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה (may do) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) לְאֹיְבֵ֥י (to the enemies) דָוִ֖ד (of David), וְכֹ֣ה (and thus) יֹסִ֑יף (may he add), אִם־ (if) אַשְׁאִ֧יר (I leave) מִכָּל־ (of all) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) ל֛וֹ (are unto him) עַד־ (by) הַבֹּ֖קֶר (the morning light) מַשְׁתִּ֥ין (one who urinates) בְּקִֽיר׃ (against the wall).

23  וַתֵּ֤רֶא (And saw) אֲבִיגַ֙יִל֙ (Abigail) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֔ד (David), וַתְּמַהֵ֕ר (and she hurried) וַתֵּ֖רֶד (and dismounted) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הַחֲמ֑וֹר (the donkey), וַתִּפֹּ֞ל (and she fell) לְאַפֵּ֤י (before the face of) דָוִד֙ (David) עַל־ (on) פָּנֶ֔יהָ (her face), וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and she bowed herself) אָֽרֶץ׃ (to the earth), 24  וַתִּפֹּל֙ (and she fell) עַל־ (at) רַגְלָ֔יו (his feet) וַתֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), בִּי־ (On me) אֲנִ֥י (on me), אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord), הֶֽעָוֺ֑ן (let this iniquity be). וּֽתְדַבֶּר־ (And let speak) נָ֤א (please) אֲמָֽתְךָ֙ (your maidservant) בְּאָזְנֶ֔יךָ (in your ears), וּשְׁמַ֕ע (and hear) אֵ֖ת (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) אֲמָתֶֽךָ׃ (of your maidservant). 25  אַל־ (Not) נָ֣א (please) יָשִׂ֣ים (set) אֲדֹנִ֣י׀ (my lord) אֶת־ (-) לִבּ֡וֹ (his heart) אֶל־ (to) אִישׁ֩ (man) הַבְּלִיַּ֨עַל (of worthlessness) הַזֶּ֜ה (this), עַל־ (upon) נָבָ֗ל (Nabal), כִּ֤י (for) כִשְׁמוֹ֙ (as his name is), כֶּן־ (so) ה֔וּא (is he). נָבָ֣ל (Nabal is) שְׁמ֔וֹ (his name), וּנְבָלָ֖ה (and folly is) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him). וַֽאֲנִי֙ (And I) אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ (your maidservant) לֹ֥א (not) רָאִ֛יתִי (did see) אֶת־ (-) נַעֲרֵ֥י (the young men) אֲדֹנִ֖י (of my lord) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) שָׁלָֽחְתָּ׃ (you sent).

26  וְעַתָּ֣ה (And now) אֲדֹנִ֗י (my lord), חַי־ (as lives) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH), וְחֵֽי־ (and as lives) נַפְשְׁךָ֙ (your soul), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (since) מְנָעֲךָ֤ (has held you back) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מִבּ֣וֹא (from coming) בְדָמִ֔ים (to bloodshed), וְהוֹשֵׁ֥עַ (and from avenging) יָדְךָ֖ (with your own hand) לָ֑ךְ (yourself), וְעַתָּ֗ה (and now) יִֽהְי֤וּ (let be) כְנָבָל֙ (as Nabal) אֹיְבֶ֔יךָ (your enemies), וְהַֽמְבַקְשִׁ֥ים (and those seeking) אֶל־ (against) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord) רָעָֽה׃ (harm).

27  וְעַתָּה֙ (And) הַבְּרָכָ֣ה (blessing) הַזֹּ֔את (this) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֵבִ֥יא (has brought) שִׁפְחָתְךָ֖ (your maidservant) לַֽאדֹנִ֑י (to my lord), וְנִתְּנָה֙ (and let it be given) לַנְּעָרִ֔ים (to the young men) הַמִּֽתְהַלְּכִ֖ים (who follow) בְּרַגְלֵ֥י (at the feet) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (of my lord). 28  שָׂ֥א (Forgive) נָ֖א (please) לְפֶ֣שַׁע (the trespass) אֲמָתֶ֑ךָ (of your maidservant), כִּ֣י (for) עָשֹֽׂה־ (making) יַעֲשֶׂה֩ (will make) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) לַֽאדֹנִ֜י (for my lord) בַּ֣יִת (a house) נֶאֱמָ֗ן (enduring), כִּי־ (because) מִלְחֲמ֤וֹת (the battles) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) נִלְחָ֔ם (fights), וְרָעָ֛ה (and evil) לֹא־ (not) תִמָּצֵ֥א (is found) בְךָ֖ (in you) מִיָּמֶֽיךָ׃ (throughout your days).

29  וַיָּ֤קָם (And has risen) אָדָם֙ (a man) לִרְדָפְךָ֔ (to pursue you) וּלְבַקֵּ֖שׁ (and seek) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ (your life), וְֽהָיְתָה֩ (and shall be) נֶ֨פֶשׁ (the life) אֲדֹנִ֜י (of my lord) צְרוּרָ֣ה׀ (bound) בִּצְר֣וֹר (in the bundle) הַחַיִּ֗ים (of the living) אֵ֚ת (with) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God). וְאֵ֨ת (And) נֶ֤פֶשׁ (the souls) אֹיְבֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your enemies) יְקַלְּעֶ֔נָּה (He shall sling out) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) כַּ֥ף (of the hollow) הַקָּֽלַע׃ (of the sling).

30  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it shall come to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) יַעֲשֶׂ֤ה (has done) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לַֽאדֹנִ֔י (for my lord) כְּכֹ֛ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He has spoken) אֶת־ (-) הַטּוֹבָ֖ה (the good) עָלֶ֑יךָ (concerning you), וְצִוְּךָ֥ (and has appointed you) לְנָגִ֖יד (ruler) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel), 31  וְלֹ֣א (that not) תִהְיֶ֣ה (will be) זֹ֣את׀ (this) לְךָ֡ (to you) לְפוּקָה֩ (grief) וּלְמִכְשׁ֨וֹל (and offense) לֵ֜ב (of heart) לַאדֹנִ֗י (to my lord), וְלִשְׁפָּךְ־ (that you have shed) דָּם֙ (blood) חִנָּ֔ם (without cause), וּלְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ (or that has avenged) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord) ל֑וֹ (himself) וְהֵיטִ֤ב (shall have dealt well) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לַֽאדֹנִ֔י (with my lord), וְזָכַרְתָּ֖ (and remember) אֶת־ (-) אֲמָתֶֽךָ׃ס (your maidservant).

32  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֖ד (David) לַאֲבִיגַ֑ל (to Abigail), בָּר֤וּךְ (Blessed is) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֧ר (who) שְׁלָחֵ֛ךְ (sent you) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) לִקְרָאתִֽי׃ (to meet me). 33  וּבָר֥וּךְ (And blessed is) טַעְמֵ֖ךְ (your discernment), וּבְרוּכָ֣ה (and blessed are) אָ֑תְּ (you), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (because) כְּלִתִ֜נִי (you have kept me) הַיּ֤וֹם (day) הַזֶּה֙ (this) מִבּ֣וֹא (from coming) בְדָמִ֔ים (to bloodshed) וְהֹשֵׁ֥עַ (and from avenging) יָדִ֖י (with my own hand) לִֽי׃ (myself). 34  וְאוּלָ֗ם (Yet), חַי־ (as lives) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) מְנָעַ֔נִי (has kept me back) מֵהָרַ֖ע (from hurting) אֹתָ֑ךְ (you) כִּ֣י׀ (surely) לוּלֵ֣י (unless) מִהַ֗רְתְּ (you had hurried) וַתָּבֹאתִי (and come) לִקְרָאתִ֔י (to meet me), כִּ֣י (surely) אִם־ (not) נוֹתַ֧ר (would have been left) לְנָבָ֛ל (to Nabal) עַד־ (by) א֥וֹר (light) הַבֹּ֖קֶר (the morning) מַשְׁתִּ֥ין (one who urinates) בְּקִֽיר׃ (against the wall).

35  וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And received) דָּוִד֙ (David) מִיָּדָ֔הּ (from her hand) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) הֵבִ֖יאָה (she had brought) ל֑וֹ (to him), וְלָ֣הּ (and to her) אָמַ֗ר (he said), עֲלִ֤י (Go up) לְשָׁלוֹם֙ (in peace) לְבֵיתֵ֔ךְ (to your house). רְאִי֙ (Behold), שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי (I have listened) בְקוֹלֵ֔ךְ (to your voice) וָאֶשָּׂ֖א (and I have lifted up) פָּנָֽיִךְ׃ (your face).

36  וַתָּבֹ֣א (And went) אֲבִיגַ֣יִל׀ (Abigail) אֶל־ (to) נָבָ֡ל (Nabal), וְהִנֵּה־ (and there) לוֹ֩ (he was) מִשְׁתֶּ֨ה (holding a feast) בְּבֵית֜וֹ (in his house), כְּמִשְׁתֵּ֣ה (like the feast) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (of a king). וְלֵ֤ב (And the heart) נָבָל֙ (of Nabal) ט֣וֹב (was glad) עָלָ֔יו (within him), וְה֥וּא (and he was) שִׁכֹּ֖ר (drunk) עַד־ (very); מְאֹ֑ד (-) וְלֹֽא־ (therefore not) הִגִּ֣ידָה (she told) לּ֗וֹ (him) דָּבָ֥ר (a thing) קָטֹ֛ן (small) וְגָד֖וֹל (to great) עַד־ (until) א֥וֹר (light) הַבֹּֽקֶר׃ (the morning).

37  וַיְהִ֣י (And it was) בַבֹּ֗קֶר (in the morning), בְּצֵ֤את (when had gone) הַיַּ֙יִן֙ (the wine) מִנָּבָ֔ל (from Nabal), וַתַּגֶּד־ (that had told) ל֣וֹ (him) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the things) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיָּ֤מָת (and died) לִבּוֹ֙ (his heart) בְּקִרְבּ֔וֹ (within him) וְה֖וּא (and he) הָיָ֥ה (became) לְאָֽבֶן׃ (a stone). 38  וַיְהִ֖י (And it was) כַּעֲשֶׂ֣רֶת (in about ten) הַיָּמִ֑ים (days) וַיִּגֹּ֧ף (that struck) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) נָבָ֖ל (Nabal), וַיָּמֹֽת׃ (and he died).

David Marries Abigail

39  וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard) דָּוִד֮ (David) כִּ֣י (that) מֵ֣ת (was dead) נָבָל֒ (Nabal), וַיֹּ֡אמֶר (and he said), בָּר֣וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָ֡ה (YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) רָב֩ (has pleaded) אֶת־ (-) רִ֨יב (the cause) חֶרְפָּתִ֜י (of my reproach) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) נָבָ֗ל (of Nabal), וְאֶת־ (and) עַבְדּוֹ֙ (His servant) חָשַׂ֣ךְ (has kept) מֵֽרָעָ֔ה (from evil). וְאֵת֙ (And for) רָעַ֣ת (the wickedness) נָבָ֔ל (of Nabal) הֵשִׁ֥יב (has returned) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּרֹאשׁ֑וֹ (on his own head).

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And sent) דָּוִד֙ (David) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and spoke) בַּאֲבִיגַ֔יִל (with Abigail), לְקַחְתָּ֥הּ (to take her) ל֖וֹ (to him) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife). 40  וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (And had come) עַבְדֵ֥י (the servants) דָוִ֛ד (of David) אֶל־ (to) אֲבִיגַ֖יִל (Abigail) הַכַּרְמֶ֑לָה (at Carmel), וַיְדַבְּר֤וּ (and they spoke) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (to her), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), דָּוִד֙ (David) שְׁלָחָ֣נוּ (sent us) אֵלַ֔יִךְ (to you) לְקַחְתֵּ֥ךְ (to take you) ל֖וֹ (to him) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife).

41  וַתָּ֕קָם (And she arose) וַתִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ (and bowed) אַפַּ֖יִם (her face) אָ֑רְצָה (to the earth), וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), הִנֵּ֤ה (Here is) אֲמָֽתְךָ֙ (your maidservant), לְשִׁפְחָ֔ה (a servant) לִרְחֹ֕ץ (to wash) רַגְלֵ֖י (the feet) עַבְדֵ֥י (of the servants) אֲדֹנִֽי׃ (of my lord).

42  וַתְּמַהֵ֞ר (And hurried) וַתָּ֣קָם (and rose) אֲבִיגַ֗יִל (Abigail), וַתִּרְכַּב֙ (and rode) עַֽל־ (on) הַחֲמ֔וֹר (a donkey), וְחָמֵשׁ֙ (and five) נַעֲרֹתֶ֔יהָ (of her maidens) הַהֹלְכ֖וֹת (were going) לְרַגְלָ֑הּ (at her feet), וַתֵּ֗לֶךְ (and she followed) אַֽחֲרֵי֙ (after) מַלְאֲכֵ֣י (the messengers) דָוִ֔ד (of David) וַתְּהִי־ (and became) ל֖וֹ (his) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (wife).

43  וְאֶת־ (And also) אֲחִינֹ֛עַם (Ahinoam) לָקַ֥ח (took) דָּוִ֖ד (David) מִֽיִּזְרְעֶ֑אל (from Jezreel) וַתִּהְיֶ֛יןָ (and became) גַּֽם־ (even) שְׁתֵּיהֶ֥ן (both) ל֖וֹ (unto him) לְנָשִֽׁים׃ס (for wives). 44  וְשָׁא֗וּל (And Saul) נָתַ֛ן (had given) אֶת־ (-) מִיכַ֥ל (Michal) בִּתּ֖וֹ (his daughter), אֵ֣שֶׁת (wife) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), לְפַלְטִ֥י (to Palti) בֶן־ (son) לַ֖יִשׁ (of Laish), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who was) מִגַּלִּֽים׃ (from Gallim).
