Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine…

seven women will take hold of one man

The loss of men in battle will create a severe imbalance, driving women to seek the protection and public standing of marriage. The number seven often symbolizes completeness or perfection, emphasizing the severity of this imbalance.

Isa 13:12 I will make man scarcer than pure gold,…
Deu 28:56-57 The most gentle and refined woman among you,…
Jer 31:22 How long will you wander, O faithless daughter?…

and say, “We will eat our own bread and provide our own clothes.

Just let us be called by your name.

Marriage will provide legal identity and social security, even without a normal household arrangement.

Deu 28:10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see you are called…
2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…

Take away our disgrace!”

Remaining unmarried in the aftermath of judgment will carry public shame, and these women will plead for that reproach to be removed.

Gen 30:23 she conceived and gave birth to a son. “God has taken away…
Isa 54:4 Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;…

On that day

God will intervene to judge evil, preserve a faithful remnant, and restore His people. The promised future holds both accountability for the wicked and hope for those who belong to Him.

Jol 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood…
Isa 2:11-12 The proud look of man will be humbled…

the Branch of the LORD

The Branch points to the coming Davidic Messiah, Jesus Christ, whose arrival brings new life after judgment. He will rule in righteousness and reveal the glory of the LORD.

Jer 23:5-6 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 33:15 In those days and at that time I will cause to sprout…
Zec 6:12 And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts…

will be beautiful and glorious,

The Messiah’s reign will display God’s holiness, majesty, and faithfulness. What sin had defiled and ruined will be made glorious through His saving work.

Isa 33:17 Your eyes will see the King in His beauty.…
Psa 50:2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.
Psa 96:6 Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty…

and the fruit of the land

The restored land will bear abundant produce, reflecting God’s blessing upon a purified and renewed Israel. Physical prosperity will accompany the spiritual restoration of the people.

Deu 8:7-10 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…
Jol 2:22-24 Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field,…
Amo 9:13 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,…

will be the pride and glory of Israel’s survivors.

Those preserved through judgment will no longer bear shame or devastation. As God’s faithful remnant, they will share in the honor of His restored kingdom and the fulfillment of His covenant promises.

Isa 37:31-32 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah…
Jer 33:9 So this city will bring Me renown, joy, praise…
Zep 3:19-20 Behold, at that time, I will deal with all who afflict you.…

Whoever remains in Zion

“Whoever remains in Zion” refers to the remnant preserved after God’s judgment purges Jerusalem. Though Zion, Israel’s spiritual and political center, is judged, God does not utterly abandon it but preserves a people for Himself.

Jol 2:32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved…
Oba 1:17 But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance…
Mic 4:7 And I will make the lame into a remnant, the outcast,…

and whoever is left in Jerusalem

“Whoever is left in Jerusalem” refers to the remnant preserved by God’s mercy after judgment. Though invasion, exile, and destruction would devastate the city, the Lord would sustain His purposes for Jerusalem and His people.

Isa 37:32 For a remnant will go forth from Jerusalem,…
Neh 11:1-2 Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem,…
Zec 8:4-5 The LORD of Hosts says: “Old men and old women…”…

will be called holy—

Those who remain after God’s judgment will be cleansed and set apart as holy, belonging to the Lord.

Isa 62:12 And they will be called the Holy People,…
Exo 19:6 And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests…
1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…

all in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living—

“All in Jerusalem who are recorded among the living” refers to those whom God has chosen and preserved among His people. Their names are securely recorded by Him, marking them not merely as survivors of judgment but as heirs of His promised restoration.

Psa 69:28 May they be blotted out of the Book of Life…
Rev 3:5 Like them, he who overcomes will be dressed in white.…
Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch…

when the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion

God will remove the moral corruption that had defiled Jerusalem. The daughters of Zion represent the people of the city, especially those who had enjoyed its privileges while participating in its pride, idolatry, and injustice. Restoration begins with God’s cleansing work.

Isa 1:16 Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds…
Zec 13:1 On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David,…
Ezk 36:25 I will also sprinkle clean water on you,…

and cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem

Jerusalem’s guilt included bloodshed and oppression. Though it was the center of Israel’s worship, it had also become marked by rebellion against the Lord. God will remove both the stain of guilt and the sinful conditions that produced it.

Jer 4:14 Wash the evil from your heart, O Jerusalem,…
Lam 4:13-14 But this was for the sins of her prophets…
Ezk 22:2-4 “As for you, son of man, will you judge her?”…

by a spirit of judgment

The Lord’s judgment will expose and condemn sin, bringing necessary correction upon His people. His discipline is not empty destruction but prepares a purified remnant to live under His rule.

Isa 28:6 a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment…
Isa 11:3-4 And He will delight in the fear of the LORD.…
Jhn 16:8 And when He comes, He will convict the world…

and a spirit of fire.

God’s holiness consumes what is impure, as fire refines and removes dross from metal. The cleansing of Jerusalem will be thorough, leaving a people set apart for the Lord.

Mat 3:11 I baptize you with water for repentance…
Luk 3:16 John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water”…
Act 2:3-4 They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated…

Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion

After cleansing Jerusalem and judging its proud and corrupt inhabitants, the LORD will establish His protecting presence over Zion. Mount Zion, David’s former stronghold and the site of Jerusalem, represents the restored city and the place where God dwells among His people.

Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it…
Psa 48:1-2 A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD…
Jol 3:17 Then you will know that I am the LORD your God,…

and over her assemblies

God’s presence will rest not only over the city but also over the gathered worshipers within it. The restored community will live under His care, united in worship and secure from the threats that once brought judgment and devastation.

Lev 23:2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them,…
Exo 12:16 On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly,…
Deu 31:12-13 Assemble the people—men, women, children…

a cloud of smoke by day and a glowing flame of fire by night.

The visible cloud and fire recall the LORD’s guidance of Israel in the wilderness. As He led and protected the nation after the Exodus, He will again make His presence known among His redeemed people, guiding them and guarding them continually.

Exo 13:21-22 And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud…
Num 9:15-16 On the day that the tabernacle, the Tent of the Testimony,…
Exo 40:38 For the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day,…

For over all the glory there will be a canopy,

God’s glory will be covered by a divine shelter, providing protection and preserving the holiness of His dwelling place. Zion’s future restoration will include the LORD’s manifest presence, safety for His people, and the fulfillment of His purpose for Jerusalem.

Exo 40:34-35 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting,…
Psa 18:11 He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy…
Psa 27:5 For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter;…

a shelter to give shade from the heat by day,

The canopy over Mount Zion will provide real protection for the purified remnant living in Jerusalem. As the cloud covered Israel in the wilderness, the Lord’s presence will shelter His people from the harsh conditions of the land.

Isa 25:4 For You have been a refuge for the poor…
Psa 121:5-6 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade…
Psa 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High…

and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and the rain.

The same divine covering will protect them from destructive storms and danger. After judgment has removed uncleanness from Jerusalem, God will dwell among His people and secure them from the threats that once surrounded them.

Isa 32:2 Each will be like a shelter from the wind…
Psa 55:8 I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”
Psa 57:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”…
