1	Understanding for Asaph. Attend, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.	Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!	A maskil of Asaph. My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2	I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter propositions from the beginning.	I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,	I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3	How great things have we heard and known, and our fathers have told us.	things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us.	things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.
4	They have not been hidden from their children, in another generation. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, and his wonders which he hath done.	We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.	We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.
5	And he set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children:	He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children,	He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,
6	that another generation might know them. The children that should be born and should rise up, and declare them to their children.	that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,	so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7	That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: and may seek his commandments.	so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;	Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
8	That they may not become like their fathers, a perverse end exasperating generation. A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful to God.	and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.	They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9	The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: they have turned back in the day of battle.	The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.	The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle;
10	They kept not the covenant of God: and in his law they would not walk.	They did not keep God’s covenant, but refused to walk according to his law.	they did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.
11	And they forgot his benefits, and his wonders that he had shewn them.	They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them.	They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.
12	Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.	In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.	He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
13	He divided the sea and brought them through: and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.	He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.	He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand up like a wall.
14	And he conducted them with a cloud by day: and all the night with a light of	In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light.	He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.
15	He struck the rock in the wilderness: and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.	He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.	He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;

17	And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.	Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.	But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18	And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking meat for their desires.	They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved.	They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
19	And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?	They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?	They spoke against God; they said, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?
20	Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people?	He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?”	True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”
21	Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry: and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and wrath came up against Israel.	Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel,	When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,
22	Because they believed not in God: and trusted not in his salvation.	because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power.	for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.
23	And he had commanded the clouds from above, and had opened the doors of heaven.	Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven,	Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;
24	And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them the bread of heaven.	and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven.	he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.
25	Man ate the bread of angels: he sent them provisions in abundance.	Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance.	Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.
26	He removed the south wind from heaven: and by his power brought in the southwest wind.	He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind;	He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.
27	And he rained upon them flesh as dust: and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.	he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas;	He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.
28	And they fell in the midst of their camp, round about their pavilions.	he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.	He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.
29	So they did eat, and were filled exceedingly, and he gave them their desire:	And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved.	They ate till they were gorged— he had given them what they craved.
30	they were not defrauded of that which they craved. As yet their meat was in their mouth:	But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths,	But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,
31	and the wrath of God came upon them. And he slew the fat ones amongst them, and brought down the chosen men of Israel.	the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel.	God’s anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
32	In all these things they sinned still: and they believed not for his wondrous works.	In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.	In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.
33	And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years in haste.	So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror.	So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror.
34	When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned, and came to him early in the morning.	When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly.	Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.
35	And they remembered that God was their helper: and the most high God their redeemer.	They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.	They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.
36	And they loved him with their mouth: and with their tongue they lied unto him:	But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.	But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;
37	But their heart was not right with him: nor were they counted faithful in his covenant.	Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.	their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
38	But he is merciful, and will forgive their sins: and will not destroy them. And many a time did he turn away his anger: and did not kindle all his wrath.	Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.	Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.
39	And he remembered that they are flesh: a wind that goeth and returneth not.	He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.	He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.
40	How often did they provoke him in the desert: and move him to wrath in the place without water?	How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!	How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!
41	And they turned back and tempted God: and grieved the holy one of Israel.	They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.	Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.
42	They remembered not his hand, in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them:	They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,	They did not remember his power— the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,
43	How he wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanis.	when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.	the day he displayed his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan.
44	And he turned their rivers into blood, and their showers that they might, not drink.	He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.	He turned their river into blood; they could not drink from their streams.
45	He sent amongst them divers sores of flies, which devoured them: and frogs which destroyed them.	He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.	He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.
46	And he gave up their fruits to the blast, and their labours to the locust.	He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust.	He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust.
47	And he destroyed their vineyards with hail, and their mulberry trees with hoarfrost.	He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost.	He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48	And he gave up their cattle to the hail, and their stock to the fire.	He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts.	He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.
49	And he sent upon them the wrath of his indignation: indignation and wrath and trouble, which he sent by evil angels.	He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels.	He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility— a band of destroying angels.
50	He made a way for a path to his anger: he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death.	He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague.	He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague.
51	And he killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: the firstfruits of all their labour in the tabernacles of Cham.	He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.	He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.
52	And he took away his own people as sheep: and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.	Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.	But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53	And he brought them out in hope, and they feared not: and the sea overwhelmed their enemies.	He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.	He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.
54	And he brought them into the mountain of his sanctuary: the mountain which his right hand had purchased. And he cast out the Gentiles before them: and by lot divided to them their land by a line of distribution.	And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.	And so he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken.
55	And he made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.	He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.	He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56	Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God: and they kept not his testimonies.	Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies,	But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.
57	And they turned away, and kept not the covenant: even like their fathers they were turned aside as a crooked bow.	but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow.	Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.
58	They provoked him to anger on their hills: and moved him to jealousy with their graven things.	For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols.	They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.
59	God heard, and despised them, and he reduced Israel exceedingly as it were to nothing.	When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel.	When God heard them, he was furious; he rejected Israel completely.
60	And he put away the tabernacle of Silo, his tabernacle where he dwelt among men.	He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind,	He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among humans.
61	And he delivered their strength into captivity: and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.	and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe.	He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62	And he shut up his people under the sword: and he despised his inheritance.	He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage.	He gave his people over to the sword; he was furious with his inheritance.
63	Fire consumed their young men: and their maidens were not lamented.	Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song.	Fire consumed their young men, and their young women had no wedding songs;
64	Their priests fell by the sword: and their widows did not mourn.	Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.	their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep.
65	And the Lord was awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine.	Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine.	Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66	And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts: he put them to an everlasting reproach.	And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame.	He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.
67	And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:	He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,	Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;
68	But he chose the tribe of Juda, mount Sion which he loved.	but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves.	but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.
69	And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land which he founded for ever.	He built his sanctuary like the high heavens, like the earth, which he has founded forever.	He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.
70	And he chose his servant David, and took him from the hocks of sheep: he brought him from following the ewes great with young,	He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds;	He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;
71	To feed Jacob his servant, and Israel his inheritance.	from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance.	from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.
72	And he fed them in the innocence of his heart: and conducted them by the skilfulness of his hands.	With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.	And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
