1 Unto the end, for Idithun, a psalm of Asaph. I cried to the Lord with my voice; to God with my voice, and he gave ear to me. I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me. For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm. I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought God, with my hands lifted up to him in the night, and I was not deceived. My soul refused to be comforted: In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted.
3 I remembered God, and was delighted, and was exercised, and my spirit swooned away. When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.
4 My eyes prevented the watches: I was troubled, and I spoke not. You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.
5 I thought upon the days of old: and I had in my mind the eternal years. I consider the days of old, the years long ago. I thought about the former days, the years of long ago;
6 And I meditated in the night with my own heart: and I was exercised and I swept my spirit. I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” Then my spirit made a diligent search: I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked:
7 Will God then cast off for ever? or will he never be more favourable again? “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? “Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again?
8 Or will he cut off his mercy for ever, from generation to generation? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?
9 Or will God forget to shew mercy? or will he in his anger shut up his mercies? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”
10 And I said, Now have I begun: this is the change of the right hand of the most High. Then I said, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.” Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I remembered the works of the Lord: for I will be mindful of thy wonders from the beginning. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 And I will meditate on all thy works: and will be employed in thy inventions. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
13 Thy way, O God, is in the holy place: who is the great God like our God? Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?
14 Thou art the God that dost wonders. Thou hast made thy power known among the nations: You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
15 with thy arm thou hast redeemed thy people the children of Jacob and of Joseph. You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
16 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee: and they were afraid, and the depths were troubled. When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed.
17 Great was the noise of the waters: the clouds sent out a sound. For thy arrows pass: The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth.
18 the voice of thy thunder in a wheel. Thy lightnings enlightened the world: the earth shook and trembled. The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.
19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy paths in many waters: and thy footsteps shall not be known. Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen. Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.
20 Thou hast conducted thy people like sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
