1 Unto the end, in praises, a psalm for Asaph: a canticle to the Assyrians. In Judea God is known: his name is great in Israel. In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song. God is renowned in Judah; in Israel his name is great.
2 And his place is in peace: and his abode in Sion: His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. His tent is in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion.
3 There hath he broken the powers of bows, the shield, the sword, and the battie. There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.
4 Thou enlightenest wonderfully from the everlasting hills. Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains full of prey. You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.
5 All the foolish of heart were troubled. They have slept their sleep; and all the men of riches have found nothing in their hands. The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands. The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
6 At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, they have all slumbered that mounted on horseback. At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned. At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.
7 Thou art terrible, and who shall resist thee? from that time thy wrath. But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?
8 Thou hast caused judgment to be heard from heaven: the earth trembled and was still, From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, From heaven you pronounced judgment, and the land feared and was quiet—
9 When God arose in judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. Selah when you, God, rose up to judge, to save all the afflicted of the land.
10 For the thought of man shall give praise to thee: and the remainders of the thought shall keep holiday to thee. Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt. Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise, and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.
11 Vow ye, and pay to the Lord your God: all you that are round about him bring presents. To him that is terrible, Make your vows to the LORD your God and perform them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared, Make vows to the LORD your God and fulfill them; let all the neighboring lands bring gifts to the One to be feared.
12 even to him who taketh away the spirit of princes: to the terrible with the kings of the earth. who cuts off the spirit of princes, who is to be feared by the kings of the earth. He breaks the spirit of rulers; he is feared by the kings of the earth.
