1 Of David. Contend with my opponents, O LORD; fight against those who fight against me. 2 Take up Your shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. Take hold of shield and buckler and rise for my help! Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help. Take hold of buckler and shield And rise up as my help. Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid.
3 Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers; say to my soul: “I am your salvation.” Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers! Say to my soul, “I am your salvation!” Draw out also the spear, and stop <i>the way</i> against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I <i>am</i> thy salvation. Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me; Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.” Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to me, “I am your salvation.”
4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plan to harm me be driven back and confounded. Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me! Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt. Let those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life; Let those be turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me. May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.
5 May they be like chaff in the wind, as the angel of the LORD drives them away. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away! 6 May their path be dark and slick, as the angel of the LORD pursues. Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them! 7 For without cause they laid their net for me; without reason they dug a pit for my soul. For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. 8 May ruin befall them by surprise; may the net they hid ensnare them; may they fall into the hazard they created. Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction! Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall. Let destruction come upon him when he is unaware, And let the net which he hid catch him; Let him fall into that very destruction. may ruin overtake them by surprise— may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and exult in His salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation. And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation. So my soul shall rejoice in the LORD; It shall rejoice in His salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.
10 All my bones will exclaim, “Who is like You, O LORD, who delivers the afflicted from the aggressor, the poor and needy from the robber?” All my bones shall say, “O LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?” All my bones shall say, LORD, who <i>is</i> like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him? All my bones will say, “LORD, who is like You, Who rescues the afflicted from one who is too strong for him, And the afflicted and the poor from one who robs him?” My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
11 Hostile witnesses come forward; they make charges I know nothing about. Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know. False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge <i>things</i> that I knew not. Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me things that I do not know. Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repay me evil for good, to the bereavement of my soul. They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. They rewarded me evil for good <i>to</i> the spoiling of my soul. 13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, but my prayers returned unanswered. But I, when they were sick— I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest. But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing <i>was</i> sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. 14 I paced about as for my friend or brother; I was bowed down with grief, like one mourning for his mother. I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning. I behaved myself as though <i>he had been</i> my friend <i>or</i> brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourneth <i>for his</i> mother. I went about as though it were my friend or brother; I bowed down in mourning, like one who mourns for a mother. I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.
15 But when I stumbled, they assembled in glee; they gathered together against me. Assailants I did not know slandered me without ceasing. But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered; they gathered together against me; wretches whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: <i>yea</i>, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew <i>it</i> not; they did tear <i>me</i>, and ceased not: But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; The afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing. But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; assailants gathered against me without my knowledge. They slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like godless jesters at a feast, they gnashed their teeth at me. like profane mockers at a feast, they gnash at me with their teeth. 17 How long, O Lord, will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, my precious life from these lions. How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! Lord, how long wilt thou look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions. Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, My only <i>life</i> from the lions. How long, Lord, will you look on? 18 Then I will give You thanks in the great assembly; I will praise You among many people. I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you. I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people. I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty people. I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among the throngs I will praise you.
19 Let not my enemies gloat over me without cause, nor those who hate me without reason wink in malice. Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: <i>neither</i> let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause. Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; Nor let those who hate me for no reason wink maliciously. Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.
20 For they do not speak peace, but they devise deceitful schemes against those who live quietly in the land. For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit. For they speak not peace: but they devise deceitful matters against <i>them that are</i> quiet in the land. For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land. They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land.
21 They gape at me and say, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen!” They open wide their mouths against me; they say, “Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!” Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, <i>and</i> said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen <i>it</i>. They opened their mouth wide against me; They said, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it!” They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it.”
22 O LORD, You have seen it; be not silent. O Lord, be not far from me. You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! <i>This</i> thou hast seen, O LORD: keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me. You have seen it, LORD, do not keep silent; Lord, do not be far from me. LORD, you have seen this; do not be silent. Do not be far from me, Lord.
23 Awake and rise to my defense, to my cause, my God and my Lord! Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, <i>even</i> unto my cause, my God and my Lord. Stir Yourself, and awake to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord. Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord.
24 Vindicate me by Your righteousness, O LORD my God, and do not let them gloat over me. Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to your righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me! Judge me, O LORD my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me. Judge me, LORD my God, according to Your righteousness, And do not let them rejoice over me. Vindicate me in your righteousness, LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.
25 Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, just what we wanted!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up!” Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, our heart’s desire!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.” Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up. Do not let them say in their heart, “Aha, our desire!” Do not let them say, “We have swallowed him up!” Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!” or say, “We have swallowed him up.”
26 May those who gloat in my distress be ashamed and confounded; may those who exalt themselves over me be clothed in shame and reproach. Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify <i>themselves</i> against me. May those be ashamed and altogether humiliated who rejoice at my distress; May those who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and dishonor. May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 May those who favor my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “Exalted be the LORD who delights in His servant’s well-being.” Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!” Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. May those shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in my vindication; And may they say continually, “The LORD be exalted, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant.” May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
28 Then my tongue will proclaim Your righteousness and Your praises all day long. Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long. And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness <i>and</i> of thy praise all the day long. And my tongue shall proclaim Your righteousness <i>And</i> Your praise all day long. My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long.
