1	After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests, and the scribes, sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.	It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,	Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
2	But they said, Not on the feast-day, lest there should be an uproar of the people.	for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”	“But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3	And being in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at table, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, very precious; and she broke the box, and poured it on his head.	And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.	While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
4	And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?	There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?	Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume?
5	For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.	For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.	It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6	And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.	But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.	“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7	For ye have the poor with you always, and whenever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.	For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.	The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
8	She hath done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body to the burying.	She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.	She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
9	Verily I say to you, Wherever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of, for a memorial of her.	And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”	Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”	While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19	And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?	They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”	They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20	And he answered and said to them, It is one of the twelve that dippeth with me in the dish.	He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.	“It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
21	The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written concerning him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.	For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”	The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22	And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.	And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”	While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”	“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
31	But he spoke the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.	But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.	But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
32	And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.	And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”	They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

35	And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, If it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36	And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37	And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith to Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldst not thou watch one hour?	And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?	Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
38	Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.	Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”	Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39	And again he went away, and prayed, and spoke the same words.	And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.	Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
40	And when he returned, he found them asleep again (for their eyes were heavy:) neither knew they what to answer him.	And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.	When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41	And he cometh the third time, and saith to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
42	Rise, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.	Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”	Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
43	And immediately while he was yet speaking, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staffs, from the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders.	And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44	And he that betrayed him, had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.	Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”	Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
45	And as soon as he was come, he goeth immediately to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.	And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.	Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46	And they laid their hands on him, and took him.	And they laid hands on him and seized him.	The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
47	And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.	But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.	Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48	And Jesus answered and said to them, Have ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staffs to take me?	And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?	“Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
49	I was daily with you in the temple, teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.	Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”	Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50	And they all forsook him, and fled.	And they all left him and fled.	Then everyone deserted him and fled.
51	And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him.	And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,	A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,
52	And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.	but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.	he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

54	And Peter followed him at a distance, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. 55	And the chief priests, and all the council sought for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. 57	And there arose certain, and bore false testimony against him, saying,	And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,	Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
58	We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.	“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”	“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’”
59	But neither so did their testimony agree together.	Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.	Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60	And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these testify against thee?	And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”	Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”
61	But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?	But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”	But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62	And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.	And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”	“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63	Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?	And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?	The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.
64	Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.	You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.	“You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.
65	And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him, Prophesy: and the servants struck him with the palms of their hands.	And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.	Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
66	And as Peter was below in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:	And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,	While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
67	And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.	and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”	When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
68	But he denied, saying, I know not, neither do I understand what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crowed.	But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed.	But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
69	And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.	And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”	When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.”
70	And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.	But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”	Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71	But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.	But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”	He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
72	And the second time the cock crowed. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said to him, Before the cock shall crow twice, thou wilt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.	And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.	Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
