1	NOW the feast of the pasch, and of the Azymes was after two days; and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might by some wile lay hold on him, and kill him.	It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,	Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
2	But they said: Not on the festival day, lest there should be a tumult among the people.	for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”	“But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3	And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of precious spikenard: and breaking the alabaster box, she poured it out upon his head.	And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.	While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
4	Now there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said: Why was this waste of the ointment made?	There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?	Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume?
5	For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and given to the poor. And they murmured against her.	For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.	It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6	But Jesus said: Let her alone, why do you molest her? She hath wrought a good work upon me.	But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.	“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7	For the poor you have always with you: and whensoever you will, you may do them good: but me you have not always.	For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.	The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
8	She hath done what she could: she is come beforehand to anoint my body for burial.	She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.	She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
9	Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memorial of her.	And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”	Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10	And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, to betray him to them.	Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.	Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
11	Who hearing it were glad; and they promised him they would give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him. 13	And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith to them: Go ye into the city; and there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water, follow him;	And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. 15	And he will shew you a large dining room furnished; and there prepare ye for us.	And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”	He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16	And his disciples went their way, and came into the city; and they found as he had told them, and they prepared the pasch.	And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.	The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17	And when evening was come, he cometh with the twelve.	And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.	When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
18	And when they were at table and eating, Jesus saith: Amen I say to you, one of you that eateth with me shall betray me.	And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”	While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19	But they began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one by one: Is it I?	They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”	They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20	Who saith to them: One of the twelve, who dippeth with me his hand in the dish.	He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.	“It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
21	And the Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed. It were better for him, if that man had not been born.	For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”	The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22	And whilst they were eating, Jesus took bread; and blessing, broke, and gave to them, and said: Take ye. This is my body.	And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”	While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23	And having taken the chalice, giving thanks, he gave it to them. And they all drank of it.	And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.	Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24	And he said to them: This is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many.	And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.	“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.

29	But Peter saith to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, yet not I.	Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”	Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30	And Jesus saith to him: Amen I say to thee, to day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shall deny me thrice.	And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”	“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
31	But he spoke the more vehemently: Although I should die together with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner also said they all.	But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.	But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
32	And they came to a farm called Gethsemani. And he saith to his disciples: Sit you here, while I pray.	And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”	They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33	And he taketh Peter and James and John with him; and he began to fear and to be heavy.	And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.	He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
34	And he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death; stay you here, and watch.	And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”	“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35	And when he was gone forward a little, he fell flat on the ground; and he prayed, that if it might be, the hour might pass from him.	And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.	Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.
36	And he saith: Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee: remove this chalice from me; but not what I will, but what thou wilt.	And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”	“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
37	And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping. And he saith to Peter: Simon, sleepest thou? couldst thou not watch one hour?	And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?	Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
38	Watch ye, and pray that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.	Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”	Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39	A going away again, he prayed, saying the same words.	And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.	Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
40	And when he returned, he found them again asleep, (for their eyes were heavy,) and they knew not what to answer him.	And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.	When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41	And he cometh the third time, and saith to them: Sleep ye now, and take your rest. It is enough: the hour is come: behold the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
42	Rise up, let us go. Behold, he that will betray me is at hand.	Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”	Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
43	And while he was yet speaking, cometh Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve: and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the ancients.	And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44	And he that betrayed him, had given them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; lay hold on him, and lead him away carefully.	Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”	Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
45	And when he was come, immediately going up to him, he saith: Hail, Rabbi; and he kissed him.	And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.	Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46	But they laid hands on him, and held him.	And they laid hands on him and seized him.	The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
47	An one of them that stood by, drawing a sword, struck a servant of the chief priest, and cut off his ear.	But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.	Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48	And Jesus answering, said to them: Are you come out as to a robber, with swords and staves to apprehend me?	And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?	“Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
49	I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not lay hands on me. But that the scriptures may be fulfilled.	Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”	Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50	Then his disciples leaving him, all fled away.	And they all left him and fled.	Then everyone deserted him and fled.
51	And a certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and they laid hold on him.	And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,	A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,
52	But he, casting off the linen cloth, fled from them naked.	but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.	he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
53	And they brought Jesus to the high priest; and all the priests and the scribes and the ancients assembled together.	And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.	They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together.
54	And Peter followed him from afar off, even into the court of the high priest; and he sat with the servants at the fire, and warmed himself.	And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55	And the chief priests and all the council sought for evidence against Jesus, that they might put him to death, and found none.	Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.	The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
56	For many bore false witness against him, and their evidences were not agreeing.	For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree.	Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57	And some rising up, bore false witness against him, saying:	And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,	Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
58	We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another not made with hands.	“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”	“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’”
59	And their witness did not agree.	Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.	Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60	And the high priest rising up in the midst, asked Jesus, saying: Answerest thou nothing to the things that are laid to thy charge by these men?	And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”	Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”
61	But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him: Art thou the Christ the Son of the blessed God?	But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”	But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62	And Jesus said to him: I am. And you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming with the clouds of heaven.	And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”	“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63	Then the high priest rending his garments, saith: What need we any further witnesses?	And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?	The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.
64	You have heard the blasphemy. What think you? Who all condemned him to be guilty of death.	You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.	“You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.
65	And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him: Prophesy: and the servants struck him with the palms of their hands.	And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.	Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
66	Now when Peter was in the court below, there cometh one of the maidservants of the high priest.	And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,	While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
67	And when she had seen Peter warming himself, looking on him she saith: Thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.	and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”	When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
68	But he denied, saying: I neither know nor understand what thou sayest. And he went forth before the court; and the cock crew.	But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed.	But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
69	And again a maidservant seeing him, began to say to the standers by: This is one of them.	And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”	When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.”
70	But he denied again. And after a while they that stood by said again to Peter: Surely thou art one of them; for thou art also a Galilean.	But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”	Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71	But he began to curse and to swear, saying; I know not this man of whom you speak.	But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”	He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
72	And immediately the cock crew again. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said unto him: Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt thrice deny me. And he began to weep.	And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.	Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
