Parallel Chapters The Leaven of the Pharisees 1Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. | 1In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. | 1Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all,"Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. | 1In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. | 1In these circumstances, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to His disciples first: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. |
2There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. | 2Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. | 2"But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. | 2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. | 2There is nothing covered that won't be uncovered, nothing hidden that won't be made known. |
3What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. | 3Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. | 3"Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops. | 3Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. | 3Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. |
Fearing God Alone
(Matthew 10:26-31) 4"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. | 4“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. | 4"I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. | 4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. | 4"And I say to you, My friends, don't fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. |
5But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. | 5But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! | 5"But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him! | 5But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. | 5But I will show you the One to fear: Fear Him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the One to fear! |
6Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. | 6Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. | 6"Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. | 6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? | 6Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. |
7Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. | 7Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. | 7"Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows. | 7But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. | 7Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows! |
Confessing Christ
(Matthew 10:32-33) 8"I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. | 8“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, | 8"And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God; | 8Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: | 8"And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God, |
9But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. | 9but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. | 9but he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God. | 9But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. | 9but whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God. |
10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. | 10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. | 10"And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him. | 10And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. | 10Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. |
11"When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, | 11And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, | 11"When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; | 11And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: | 11Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don't worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say. |
12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." | 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” | 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say." | 12For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. | 12For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said." |
The Parable of the Rich Fool 13Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." | 13Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” | 13Someone in the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." | 13And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. | 13Someone from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." |
14Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?" | 14But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” | 14But He said to him, "Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?" | 14And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? | 14"Friend," He said to him, "who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?" |
15Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions." | 15And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” | 15Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions." | 15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. | 15He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions." |
16And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. | 16And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, | 16And He told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man was very productive. | 16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: | 16Then He told them a parable: "A rich man's land was very productive. |
17He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' | 17and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ | 17"And he began reasoning to himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' | 17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? | 17He thought to himself, What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops? |
18"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. | 18And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. | 18"Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. | 18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. | 18I will do this,' he said. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there. |
19And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."' | 19And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ | 19And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."' | 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. | 19Then I'll say to myself, "You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."' |
20"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' | 20But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ | 20"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?' | 20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? | 20"But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared--whose will they be?' |
21"This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God." | 21So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” | 21"So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." | 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. | 21"That's how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God." |
Do Not Worry
(Matthew 6:25-34) 22Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. | 22And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. | 22And He said to His disciples, "For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. | 22And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. | 22Then He said to His disciples: "Therefore I tell you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear. |
23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. | 23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. | 23"For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. | 23The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. | 23For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. |
24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! | 24Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! | 24"Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds! | 24Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? | 24Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than the birds? |
25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? | 25And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? | 25"And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life's span? | 25And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? | 25Can any of you add a cubit to his height by worrying? |
26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? | 26If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? | 26"If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about other matters? | 26If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? | 26If then you're not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest? |
27"Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. | 27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. | 27"Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. | 27Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. | 27"Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don't labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these! |
28If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you--you of little faith! | 28But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! | 28"But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith! | 28If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? | 28If that's how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will He do for you--you of little faith? |
29And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. | 29And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. | 29"And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying. | 29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. | 29Don't keep striving for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don't be anxious. |
30For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. | 30For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. | 30"For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. | 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. | 30For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. |
31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. | 31Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. | 31"But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. | 31But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. | 31"But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you. |
32"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. | 32“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. | 32"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. | 32Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. | 32Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom. |
33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. | 33Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. | 33"Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. | 33Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. | 33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won't grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. |
34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. | 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. | 34"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. | 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. | 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. |
Be Ready for Service
(Genesis 6:1-7; Matthew 24:36-51; Mark 13:32-37) 35"Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, | 35“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, | 35"Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. | 35Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; | 35"Be ready for service and have your lamps lit. |
36like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. | 36and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. | 36"Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. | 36And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. | 36You must be like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once. |
37It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. | 37Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. | 37"Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them. | 37Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. | 37Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them. |
38It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. | 38If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! | 38"Whether he comes in the second watch, or even in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. | 38And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. | 38If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn, and finds them alert, those slaves are blessed. |
39But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. | 39But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. | 39"But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. | 39And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. | 39But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. |
40You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." | 40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” | 40"You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect." | 40Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. | 40You also be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect."" |
41Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?" | 41Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” | 41Peter said, "Lord, are You addressing this parable to us, or to everyone else as well?" | 41Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all? | 41Lord," Peter asked, "are You telling this parable to us or to everyone?" |
42The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? | 42And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? | 42And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and sensible steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time? | 42And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? | 42The Lord said: "Who then is the faithful and sensible manager his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food at the proper time? |
43It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. | 43Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. | 43"Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. | 43Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. | 43That slave whose master finds him working when he comes will be rewarded. |
44Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. | 44Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. | 44"Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. | 44Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. | 44I tell you the truth: He will put him in charge of all his possessions. |
45But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. | 45But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, | 45"But if that slave says in his heart, 'My master will be a long time in coming,' and begins to beat the slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk; | 45But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; | 45But if that slave says in his heart, My master is delaying his coming,' and starts to beat the male and female slaves, and to eat and drink and get drunk, |
46The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. | 46the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. | 46the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers. | 46The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. | 46that slave's master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. |
47"The servant who knows the master's will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. | 47And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. | 47"And that slave who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will receive many lashes, | 47And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. | 47And that slave who knew his master's will and didn't prepare himself or do it will be severely beaten. |
48But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. | 48But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. | 48but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more. | 48But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. | 48But the one who did not know and did things deserving of blows will be beaten lightly. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more. |
Not Peace, But Division
(Matthew 10:34-36) 49"I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! | 49“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! | 49"I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! | 49I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? | 49"I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze! |
50But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! | 50I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! | 50"But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! | 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! | 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how it consumes Me until it is finished! |
51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. | 51Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. | 51"Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; | 51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: | 51Do you think that I came here to give peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! |
52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. | 52For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. | 52for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. | 52For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. | 52From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three. |
53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." | 53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” | 53"They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." | 53The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. | 53They will be divided, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." |
Interpreting the Present Time
(Matthew 16:1-4; Mark 8:11-13) 54He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does. | 54He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. | 54And He was also saying to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it turns out. | 54And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. | 54He also said to the crowds: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, A storm is coming,' and so it does. |
55And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is. | 55And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens. | 55"And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, 'It will be a hot day,' and it turns out that way. | 55And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. | 55And when the south wind is blowing, you say, It's going to be a scorcher!' and it is. |
56Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time? | 56You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? | 56"You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time? | 56Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? | 56Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don't you know how to interpret this time? |
Reconciling with Your Adversary
(Matthew 5:21-26) 57"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? | 57“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? | 57"And why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right? | 57Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? | 57"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? |
58As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. | 58As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. | 58"For while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. | 58When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. | 58As you are going with your adversary to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won't drag you before the judge, the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison. |
59I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny." | 59I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.” | 59"I say to you, you will not get out of there until you have paid the very last cent." | 59I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite. | 59I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last cent." |
