1	And a certain one was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.	Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.	Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2	And Mary was the one anointing the Lord with myrrh, and wiping His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.	It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.	(This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.)
3	Then the sisters sent to Him, saying, Lord, behold the one whom thou lovest is sick.	So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.”	So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”
4	And Jesus hearing said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.	But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”	When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
5	Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus, with Divine love.	Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.	Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6	Therefore when He heard that he was sick, He then remained two days in the place in which He was.	So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.	So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days,
7	Then after this He says to the disciples, Let us go again unto Judea.	Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”	and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”
8	The disciples said to Him, Master, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; dost thou go hither again?	The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?”	“But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?”
9	Jesus responded, Are there not twelve hours of the day? If any one may walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world:	Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.	Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.
10	if any one may walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.	But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”	It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
11	He spoke these things: and after this He says to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; and I go that I may awaken him.	After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”	After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”
12	Then the disciples said to Him, Lord, if he is asleep, he will be saved.	The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”	His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.”
13	But Jesus spoke concerning his death: and they thought that He spoke concerning the rest of sleep.	Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.	Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14	Then however Jesus spoke to them openly, Lazarus is dead,	Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,	So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
15	and I rejoice on account of you that I was not there, in order that you may believe; but let us go to him.	and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”	and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
16	Then Thomas, called Didymus, said to his fellow-disciples; Let us go too, that we may die with Him.	So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”	Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
17	Then Jesus having come, found him having four days in the sepulcher.	Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.	On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
18	But Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs.	Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,	Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
19	And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother.	and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.	and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.
20	Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus comes, went to meet Him: and Mary sat in the house.	So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.	When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21	Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.	“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22	And now I know that, whatsoever things you may ask of God, God will give to you.	But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”	But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
23	Jesus says to her, Thy brother will rise again.	Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”	Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
24	Martha says to Him, I know he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.	Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”	Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25	Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life; the one believing on me, though he may die, shall live: and	Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,	Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;
26	every one living and believing on me can never die: do you believe this?	and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”	and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27	She says to Him, Yes, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, come into the world.	She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”	“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
28	And having said this, she departed, and called her sister Mary, speaking secretly, The Teacher is present, and calls you.	When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”	After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.”
29	She, when she heard, arises quickly, and comes to Him:	And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.	When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
30	Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was yet in the place where Martha met Him.	Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.	Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31	Then the Jews being with her in the house, and comforting her, seeing Mary, that she arose up quickly and went out, followed her, thinking that she goes to the tomb in order that she may weep there.	When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.	When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32	Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was, seeing Him, fell at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”	When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33	Then when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews, having come with her, weeping, He groaned in spirit, and troubled Himself,	When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.	When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
34	and said, Where have you laid him? They say to Him, Lord, come and see.	And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”	“Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied.
35	Jesus wept.	Jesus wept.	Jesus wept.
36	Then the Jews were saying, Behold, how He loved him as a friend!	So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”	Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
37	And some of them said, Was not this One, having opened the eyes of the blind, able to bring it to pass, that he indeed should not die?	But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”	But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”
38	Then Jesus again groaning in Himself comes to the tomb; and it was a cave, and a stone was laid upon it.	Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.	Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
39	Jesus says; Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to Him; Lord, already he smelleth: for he is dead four days.	Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.”	“Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”
40	Jesus says to her; Did I not tell thee, that, if thou canst believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?	Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”	Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
41	Then they took away the stone; and Jesus lifted up His eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee, because Thou hast heard Me.	So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.	So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
42	I know that Thou dost always hear Me; but on account of the multitude standing around I spoke, in order that they might believe that Thou didst send Me.	I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”	I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”
43	And speaking these things, He cried out with a great voice, Lazarus, come forth.	When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”	When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
44	And the dead came out, bound as to his feet and hands with graveclothes; and his face bound round with a napkin. Jesus says to them, Loose him, and let him go.	The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”	The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
45	Then many of the Jews, having come to Mary and seeing the things which He did, believed on Him:	Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him,	Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.
46	but certain ones of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus did.	but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.	But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47	Then the chief priests and Pharisees assembled the Sanhedrin, and continued to say, What are we doing? because this man is doing many miracles.	So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.	Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.
48	If we thus let Him alone, all will believe on Him: and the Romans will come and take away our place and nation.	If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”	If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
49	But one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them,	But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all.	Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all!
50	You know nothing, you do not consider that it is profitable to you, that one man may die for the people, and the whole nation perish not.	Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”	You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
51	And he spoke this not of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation.	He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,	He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,
52	And not only for the nation, but that He may gather into one the children of God dispersed abroad.	and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.	and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.
53	Then from that day they passed the verdict, that they would kill Him.	So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.	So from that day on they plotted to take his life.
54	Therefore Jesus walked no more publicly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, into a city called Ephraim; and there tarried with His disciples.	Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.	Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
55	And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many came up out of the country into Jerusalem before the passover, in order that they might purify themselves.	Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.	When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.
56	Then they were seeking Jesus, and standing in the temple, they were saying one with another, What seems to you; that He may not come to the feast?	They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”	They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the festival at all?”
57	And both the high priests and Pharisees had given commandment, if any one should know where He is, he should communicate it, in order that they might arrest Him.	Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.	But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.
