1	The word that YHWH spoke concerning Babylon and concerning the land of the Chaldeans by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet.	The word that the LORD spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet:	This is the word the LORD spoke through Jeremiah the prophet concerning Babylon and the land of the Babylonians:
2	“Declare it among the nations, and make it heard, and lift up a signal; make it heard, and do not hide it! Say, ‘Is taken Babylon, is put to shame Bel, is dismayed Merodach; are put to shame her idols, are dismayed her images!’	“Declare among the nations and proclaim, set up a banner and proclaim, conceal it not, and say: ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.’	“Announce and proclaim among the nations, lift up a banner and proclaim it; keep nothing back, but say, ‘Babylon will be captured; Bel will be put to shame, Marduk filled with terror. Her images will be put to shame and her idols filled with terror.’
3	For a nation from the north has come up against her, and it will set her land as a desolation, and there will be no one dwelling in her, from man even to beast—they will wander off; they will depart.”	“For out of the north a nation has come up against her, which shall make her land a desolation, and none shall dwell in it; both man and beast shall flee away.	A nation from the north will attack her and lay waste her land. No one will live in it; both people and animals will flee away.
4	“In those days and at that time,” a declaration of YHWH, “will come the sons of Israel, they and the sons of Judah together; going on and weeping they will come, and YHWH their God they will seek.	“In those days and in that time, declares the LORD, the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, weeping as they come, and they shall seek the LORD their God.	“In those days, at that time,” declares the LORD, “the people of Israel and the people of Judah together will go in tears to seek the LORD their God.
5	They will ask the way to Zion, with their faces toward it: Come and let us join ourselves to YHWH in a covenant forever that will not be forgotten.	They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’	They will ask the way to Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will come and bind themselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.
6	My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray, in the mountains they have turned them away. From mountain to hill they have gone; they have forgotten their resting place.	“My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold.	“My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray and caused them to roam on the mountains. They wandered over mountain and hill and forgot their own resting place.
7	All those finding them have devoured them, and their adversaries have said, ‘We are not guilty, upon that they have sinned against YHWH, the habitation of righteousness, and the hope of their fathers—YHWH.’	All who found them have devoured them, and their enemies have said, ‘We are not guilty, for they have sinned against the LORD, their habitation of righteousness, the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’	Whoever found them devoured them; their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty, for they sinned against the LORD, their verdant pasture, the LORD, the hope of their ancestors.’
8	Wander off from the midst of Babylon, from the land of the Chaldeans; go forth and become like rams before the faces of the flock.	“Flee from the midst of Babylon, and go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as male goats before the flock.	“Flee out of Babylon; leave the land of the Babylonians, and be like the goats that lead the flock.
9	For behold, I am rousing and making come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the land of the north, and they will array themselves against her. From there she will be captured. Their arrows are like those of a skilled warrior; not one will return empty.	For behold, I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon a gathering of great nations, from the north country. And they shall array themselves against her. From there she shall be taken. Their arrows are like a skilled warrior who does not return empty-handed.	For I will stir up and bring against Babylon an alliance of great nations from the land of the north. They will take up their positions against her, and from the north she will be captured. Their arrows will be like skilled warriors who do not return empty-handed.
10	Chaldea will become as plunder; all those plundering her will be satisfied,” a declaration of YHWH.	Chaldea shall be plundered; all who plunder her shall be sated, declares the LORD.	So Babylonia will be plundered; all who plunder her will have their fill,” declares the LORD.
11	“Though you⁺ are glad, though you⁺ rejoice, O spoilers of My heritage, though you⁺ leap like a heifer treading, and bellow like mighty ones,	“Though you rejoice, though you exult, O plunderers of my heritage, though you frolic like a heifer in the pasture, and neigh like stallions,	“Because you rejoice and are glad, you who pillage my inheritance, because you frolic like a heifer threshing grain and neigh like stallions,
12	your⁺ mother will be greatly ashamed, she who bore you⁺ will be disgraced. Behold, the least of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.	your mother shall be utterly shamed, and she who bore you shall be disgraced. Behold, she shall be the last of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.	your mother will be greatly ashamed; she who gave you birth will be disgraced. She will be the least of the nations— a wilderness, a dry land, a desert.
13	From the wrath of YHWH, she will not be inhabited, and she will become a desolation completely; all passing by Babylon will be horrified, and will hiss at all her wounds.	Because of the wrath of the LORD she shall not be inhabited but shall be an utter desolation; everyone who passes by Babylon shall be appalled, and hiss because of all her wounds.	Because of the LORD’s anger she will not be inhabited but will be completely desolate. All who pass Babylon will be appalled; they will scoff because of all her wounds.
14	Array yourselves against Babylon all around, all those bending the bow! Shoot at her, do not be sparing with the arrows, for against YHWH she has sinned!	Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the LORD.	“Take up your positions around Babylon, all you who draw the bow. Shoot at her! Spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the LORD.
15	Shout against her all around! She has given her hand; her foundations have fallen; her walls are thrown down. For it is the vengeance of YHWH—take vengeance on her! As she has done, do to her!	Raise a shout against her all around; she has surrendered; her bulwarks have fallen; her walls are thrown down. For this is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance on her; do to her as she has done.	Shout against her on every side! She surrenders, her towers fall, her walls are torn down. Since this is the vengeance of the LORD, take vengeance on her; do to her as she has done to others.
16	Cut off the sower from Babylon, and the handler of the sickle in the time of harvest; before the face of the oppressing sword, everyone to his people, will turn everyone to his land and will flee.	Cut off from Babylon the sower, and the one who handles the sickle in time of harvest; because of the sword of the oppressor, every one shall turn to his own people, and every one shall flee to his own land.	Cut off from Babylon the sower, and the reaper with his sickle at harvest. Because of the sword of the oppressor let everyone return to their own people, let everyone flee to their own land.
17	Like a flock scattered is Israel, the lions have driven away: The first who devoured him was the king of Assyria, and this last one to crush his bones is Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.”	“Israel is a hunted sheep driven away by lions. First the king of Assyria devoured him, and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has gnawed his bones.	“Israel is a scattered flock that lions have chased away. The first to devour them was the king of Assyria; the last to crush their bones was Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.”
18	Therefore, thus says YHWH of Hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I am going to visit punishment against the king of Babylon and against his land, as I visited punishment against the king of Assyria.	Therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing punishment on the king of Babylon and his land, as I punished the king of Assyria.	Therefore this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “I will punish the king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king of Assyria.
19	And I will return Israel to his pasture, and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan, and in the hill country of Ephraim and in Gilead his soul will be satisfied.	I will restore Israel to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and in Bashan, and his desire shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.	But I will bring Israel back to their own pasture, and they will graze on Carmel and Bashan; their appetite will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.
20	In those days and at that time,” a declaration of YHWH, “the iniquity of Israel will be sought, and it is not, and the sins of Judah, and they will not be found; for I will grant forgiveness to those whom I leave as a remnant.	In those days and in that time, declares the LORD, iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.	In those days, at that time,” declares the LORD, “search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for the sins of Judah, but none will be found, for I will forgive the remnant I spare.
21	Go up against the land of Merathaim, against it and against those dwelling in Pekod! Slay and devote them to destruction,” a declaration of YHWH, “and do according to all that I have commanded you.”	“Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against the inhabitants of Pekod. Kill, and devote them to destruction, declares the LORD, and do all that I have commanded you.	“Attack the land of Merathaim and those who live in Pekod. Pursue, kill and completely destroy them,” declares the LORD. “Do everything I have commanded you.
22	“The voice of battle is in the land, and of great destruction!	The noise of battle is in the land, and great destruction!	The noise of battle is in the land, the noise of great destruction!
23	How has been cut down and broken the hammer of all the earth! How Babylon has become as a desolation among the nations!	How the hammer of the whole earth is cut down and broken! How Babylon has become a horror among the nations!	How broken and shattered is the hammer of the whole earth! How desolate is Babylon among the nations!
24	I laid a snare for you, and indeed you have been captured, O Babylon, and you did not know it; you were found, and also were caught, because against YHWH you have stirred up yourself!	I set a snare for you and you were taken, O Babylon, and you did not know it; you were found and caught, because you opposed the LORD.	I set a trap for you, Babylon, and you were caught before you knew it; you were found and captured because you opposed the LORD.
25	YHWH has opened His storehouse, and has brought out the weapons of His anger, for there is a work unto the Lord YHWH of the Armies in the land of the Chaldeans!	The LORD has opened his armory and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Lord GOD of hosts has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.	The LORD has opened his arsenal and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Sovereign LORD Almighty has work to do in the land of the Babylonians.
26	Come against her from the extremity! Open her granaries, and pile her up like heaps, and devote her to destruction! Do not let there be unto her a remnant!	Come against her from every quarter; open her granaries; pile her up like heaps of grain, and devote her to destruction; let nothing be left of her.	Come against her from afar. Break open her granaries; pile her up like heaps of grain. Completely destroy her and leave her no remnant.
27	Slay all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter! Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their punishment.	Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them, for their day has come, the time of their punishment.	Kill all her young bulls; let them go down to the slaughter! Woe to them! For their day has come, the time for them to be punished.
28	The voice of those fleeing and escaping from the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of YHWH our God, the vengeance for His temple.	“A voice! They flee and escape from the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, vengeance for his temple.	Listen to the fugitives and refugees from Babylon declaring in Zion how the LORD our God has taken vengeance, vengeance for his temple.
29	Call together against Babylon the archers, all those bending the bow: Encamp against her all around—do not let there be one escaping! Repay to her according to her work; according to all that she has done, do to her! For against YHWH she has seethed, against the Holy One of Israel.	“Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has proudly defied the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.	“Summon archers against Babylon, all those who draw the bow. Encamp all around her; let no one escape. Repay her for her deeds; do to her as she has done. For she has defied the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
30	Therefore her young men will fall in the streets, and all her men of war will be cut off on that day!” A declaration of YHWH.	Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed on that day, declares the LORD.	Therefore, her young men will fall in the streets; all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,” declares the LORD.
31	“Behold, I am against you, O arrogant one,” a declaration of the Lord YHWH of Hosts. “For your day has come, the time that I will visit punishment on you!	“Behold, I am against you, O proud one, declares the Lord GOD of hosts, for your day has come, the time when I will punish you.	“See, I am against you, you arrogant one,” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty, “for your day has come, the time for you to be punished.
32	And the arrogant one will stumble and will fall, and there will not be for him one to raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all around him!”	The proud one shall stumble and fall, with none to raise him up, and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all that is around him.	The arrogant one will stumble and fall and no one will help her up; I will kindle a fire in her towns that will consume all who are around her.”
33	Thus says YHWH of Hosts: “The sons of Israel are oppressed and the sons of Judah together; all who took them captive have held firmly to them; they have refused to send them away.	“Thus says the LORD of hosts: The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah with them. All who took them captive have held them fast; they refuse to let them go.	This is what the LORD Almighty says: “The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah as well. All their captors hold them fast, refusing to let them go.
34	Their Redeemer is strong—YHWH of Hosts is His name! He will fervently plead their case, so as to give rest to the land, and to bring trembling to those dwelling in Babylon.	Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name. He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.	Yet their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty is his name. He will vigorously defend their cause so that he may bring rest to their land, but unrest to those who live in Babylon.
35	A sword is upon the Chaldeans,” a declaration of YHWH, “and against those dwelling in Babylon, and against her princes, and against her wise men!	“A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the LORD, and against the inhabitants of Babylon, and against her officials and her wise men!	“A sword against the Babylonians!” declares the LORD— “against those who live in Babylon and against her officials and wise men!
36	A sword is against the diviners, that they should become fools! A sword is against her mighty ones, that they should be dismayed!	A sword against the diviners, that they may become fools! A sword against her warriors, that they may be destroyed!	A sword against her false prophets! They will become fools. A sword against her warriors! They will be filled with terror.
37	A sword is against their horses, and against their chariots, and against all the mixture who are in her midst, that they should become as women! A sword is against her treasures, that they should be plundered!	A sword against her horses and against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst, that they may become women! A sword against all her treasures, that they may be plundered!	A sword against her horses and chariots and all the foreigners in her ranks! They will become weaklings. A sword against her treasures! They will be plundered.
38	A drought is against her waters, that they should be dried up! For it is a land of graven images, and over idols they go mad!	A drought against her waters, that they may be dried up! For it is a land of images, and they are mad over idols.	A drought on her waters! They will dry up. For it is a land of idols, idols that will go mad with terror.
39	Therefore the desert creatures will dwell there with the jackals, and in it the daughters of the ostrich will dwell; it will be a habitation no more forever, and it will not be a dwelling place unto generation and generation.	“Therefore wild beasts shall dwell with hyenas in Babylon, and ostriches shall dwell in her. She shall never again have people, nor be inhabited for all generations.	“So desert creatures and hyenas will live there, and there the owl will dwell. It will never again be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation.
40	As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors,” a declaration of YHWH, “no man will dwell there, and no a son of man will reside in it.	As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, declares the LORD, so no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn in her.	As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah along with their neighboring towns,” declares the LORD, “so no one will live there; no people will dwell in it.
41	Behold! A people is coming from the north, a great nation, and many kings will be roused from the ends of the earth!	“Behold, a people comes from the north; a mighty nation and many kings are stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.	“Look! An army is coming from the north; a great nation and many kings are being stirred up from the ends of the earth.
42	The bow and the spear they hold firm; they are cruel and they do not have compassion. Their voice roars like the sea, and on horses they are riding, being arrayed like a man for the battle against you, O daughter of Babylon!	They lay hold of bow and spear; they are cruel and have no mercy. The sound of them is like the roaring of the sea; they ride on horses, arrayed as a man for battle against you, O daughter of Babylon!	They are armed with bows and spears; they are cruel and without mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, Daughter Babylon.
43	The king of Babylon has heard the report of them, and his hands hang limp; distress has taken hold of him, writhing like that of a woman in labor.	“The king of Babylon heard the report of them, and his hands fell helpless; anguish seized him, pain as of a woman in labor.	The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and his hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.
44	Behold, like a lion that comes up from the height of the Jordan against an enduring habitation, so I will act in an instant and will make them run away from her. And who is the chosen one over her I will appoint, for who is like Me? And who will arraign Me? And who is this shepherd who can stand before My face?	“Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?	Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets to a rich pastureland, I will chase Babylon from its land in an instant. Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this? Who is like me and who can challenge me? And what shepherd can stand against me?”
45	Therefore, hear the counsel of YHWH that He has counseled against Babylon, and His plans that He has planned against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely not will they drag them out, the least of the flock? Surely not will He make their dwelling place desolate over them?	Therefore hear the plan that the LORD has made against Babylon, and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.	Therefore, hear what the LORD has planned against Babylon, what he has purposed against the land of the Babylonians: The young of the flock will be dragged away; their pasture will be appalled at their fate.
46	From the sound of Babylon being captured, the earth is shaken, and the outcry among the nations is heard.	At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations.”	At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble; its cry will resound among the nations.
