For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.1Πᾶς γὰρ ἀρχιερεὺς ἐξ ἀνθρώπων λαμβανόμενος ὑπὲρ ἀνθρώπων καθίσταται τὰ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν ἵνα προσφέρῃ δῶρά τε καὶ θυσίας ὑπὲρ ἁμαρτιῶν
He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.2μετριοπαθεῖν δυνάμενος τοῖς ἀγνοοῦσιν καὶ πλανωμένοις ἐπεὶ καὶ αὐτὸς περίκειται ἀσθένειαν
Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins.3καὶ δι’ αὐτὴν ὀφείλει καθὼς περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ οὕτως καὶ περὶ αὑτοῦ* προσφέρειν περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν
And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.4Καὶ οὐχ ἑαυτῷ τις λαμβάνει τὴν τιμήν ἀλλὰ καλούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ καθώσπερ καὶ Ἀαρών
So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”5Οὕτως καὶ Χριστὸς οὐχ ἑαυτὸν ἐδόξασεν γενηθῆναι ἀρχιερέα ἀλλ’ λαλήσας πρὸς αὐτόν Υἱός μου εἶ σύ ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε
As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”;6Καθὼς καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ λέγει Σὺ ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ
who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,7Ὃς ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ δεήσεις τε καὶ ἱκετηρίας πρὸς τὸν δυνάμενον σῴζειν αὐτὸν ἐκ θανάτου μετὰ κραυγῆς ἰσχυρᾶς καὶ δακρύων προσενέγκας καὶ εἰσακουσθεὶς ἀπὸ τῆς εὐλαβείας
though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.8καίπερ ὢν Υἱός ἔμαθεν ἀφ’ ὧν ἔπαθεν τὴν ὑπακοήν
And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,9καὶ τελειωθεὶς ἐγένετο πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ αἴτιος σωτηρίας αἰωνίου
called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”10προσαγορευθεὶς ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀρχιερεὺς κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ
of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.11Περὶ οὗ πολὺς ἡμῖν λόγος καὶ δυσερμήνευτος λέγειν ἐπεὶ νωθροὶ γεγόνατε ταῖς ἀκοαῖς
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.12καὶ γὰρ ὀφείλοντες εἶναι διδάσκαλοι διὰ τὸν χρόνον πάλιν χρείαν ἔχετε τοῦ διδάσκειν ὑμᾶς τινα τὰ στοιχεῖα τῆς ἀρχῆς τῶν λογίων τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ γεγόνατε χρείαν ἔχοντες γάλακτος [καὶ] οὐ στερεᾶς τροφῆς
For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.13πᾶς γὰρ μετέχων γάλακτος ἄπειρος λόγου δικαιοσύνης νήπιος γάρ ἐστιν
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.14τελείων δέ ἐστιν στερεὰ τροφή τῶν διὰ τὴν ἕξιν τὰ αἰσθητήρια γεγυμνασμένα ἐχόντων πρὸς διάκρισιν καλοῦ τε καὶ κακοῦ
