New International Version | King James Bible |
Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. | 1And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. |
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? | 2And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? |
Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. | 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. |
Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home." | 4But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. |
He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. | 5And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. |
He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. | 6And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. |
Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. | 7And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; |
These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. | 8And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: |
Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. | 9But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. |
Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. | 10And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. |
And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them." | 11And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. |
They went out and preached that people should repent. | 12And they went out, and preached that men should repent. |
They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. | 13And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. |
King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him." | 14And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. |
Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago." | 15Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. |
But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!" | 16But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. |
For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married. | 17For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. |
For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." | 18For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. |
So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, | 19Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: |
because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him. | 20For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. |
Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. | 21And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; |
When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." | 22And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. |
And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom." | 23And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. |
She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered. | 24And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. |
At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter." | 25And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. |
The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. | 26And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. |
So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, | 27And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, |
and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. | 28And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. |
On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. | 29And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. |
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. | 30And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. |
Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." | 31And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. |
So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. | 32And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. |
But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. | 33And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. |
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. | 34And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. |
By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late. | 35And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: |
Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." | 36Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. |
But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take more than half a year's wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" | 37He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? |
"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish." | 38He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. |
Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. | 39And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. |
So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. | 40And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. |
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. | 41And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. |
They all ate and were satisfied, | 42And they did all eat, and were filled. |
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. | 43And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. |
The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. | 44And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. |
Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. | 45And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. |
After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. | 46And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. |
Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. | 47And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. |
He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, | 48And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. |
but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, | 49But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: |
because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." | 50For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. |
Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, | 51And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. |
for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. | 52For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. |
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. | 53And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. |
As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. | 54And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, |
They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. | 55And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. |
And wherever he went--into villages, towns or countryside--they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed. | 56And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. |
