| 1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus | 1Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. |
| 2and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. | 2And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. |
| 3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. | 3For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. |
| 4When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.) | 4And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. |
| 5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?" | 5Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? |
| 6He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. | 6He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |
| 7They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.' | 7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. |
| 8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions." | 8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. |
| 9And he continued, "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! | 9And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. |
| 10For Moses said, 'Honor your father and mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.' | 10For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: |
| 11But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)-- | 11But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. |
| 12then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. | 12And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; |
| 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that." | 13Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. |
| 14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. | 14And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: |
| 15Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them." | 15There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. |
| 16 | 16If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. |
| 17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. | 17And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. |
| 18"Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? | 18And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; |
| 19For it doesn't go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) | 19Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? |
| 20He went on: "What comes out of a person is what defiles them. | 20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. |
| 21For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come--sexual immorality, theft, murder, | 21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, |
| 22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. | 22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: |
| 23All these evils come from inside and defile a person." | 23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. |
| 24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. | 24And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. |
| 25In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. | 25For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: |
| 26The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. | 26The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. |
| 27"First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs." | 27But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. |
| 28"Lord," she replied, "even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." | 28And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. |
| 29Then he told her, "For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter." | 29And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. |
| 30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. | 30And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. |
| 31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. | 31And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. |
| 32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. | 32And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. |
| 33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. | 33And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; |
| 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means "Be opened!"). | 34And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. |
| 35At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. | 35And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. |
| 36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. | 36And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; |
| 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." | 37And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. |
