Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD: "Release my people in order that they may serve me! | 1 he told Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him, 'This is what the LORD says: "Let my people go so they may serve me. |
But if you refuse to release them, then I am going to plague all your territory with frogs. | 2And if you refuse to let them go, then I'm going to strike all your territory with frogs. |
The Nile will swarm with frogs, and they will come up and go into your house, in your bedroom, and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and your people, and into your ovens and your kneading troughs. | 3The Nile will swarm with frogs. They'll come up and enter your house, your bedroom, your bed, and your servants' houses. They'll jump on your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs. |
Frogs will come up against you, your people, and all your servants."'" | 4The frogs will be all over you and your servants."'" |
The LORD spoke to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Extend your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals, and over the ponds, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt.'" | 5 Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the Nile River, and over the ponds, and bring up frogs over the land of Egypt.'" |
So Aaron extended his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. | 6So Aaron stretched his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. |
The magicians did the same with their secret arts and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt too. | 7But the magicians did the same thing with their secret arts, and they brought up frogs on the land of Egypt. |
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to the LORD that he may take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will release the people that they may sacrifice to the LORD." | 8Then Pharaoh called to Moses and Aaron and said, "Plead with the LORD so that he may remove the frogs from me and my people. I'll let the people go so they can offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
Moses said to Pharaoh, "You may have the honor over me--when shall I pray for you, your servants, and your people, for the frogs to be removed from you and your houses, so that they will be left only in the Nile?" | 9Moses told Pharaoh, "You decide when I should plead for you, your servants, and your people to remove the frogs from you and your household. They'll remain only in the Nile River. " |
He said, "Tomorrow." And Moses said, "It will be as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. | 10Pharaoh said, "Tomorrow." Moses said, "It will be just as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God. |
The frogs will depart from you, your houses, your servants, and your people; they will be left only in the Nile." | 11The frogs will leave you, your house, your officials, and your people. They'll remain only in the Nile River. " |
Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD because of the frogs that he had brought on Pharaoh. | 12Then Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence, and Moses cried out to the LORD about the frogs which he had sent on Pharaoh. |
The LORD did as Moses asked--the frogs died out of the houses, the villages, and the fields. | 13The LORD did just as Moses asked, and the frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards, and in the fields. |
The Egyptians piled them in countless heaps, and the land stank. | 14They gathered them up into large piles and the land smelled terrible. |
But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. | 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. |
The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Extend your staff and strike the dust of the ground, and it will become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.'" | 16Then the LORD told Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff, strike the dust of the ground, and the dust will become gnats throughout the land of Egypt.'" |
They did so; Aaron extended his hand with his staff, he struck the dust of the ground, and it became gnats on people and on animals. All the dust of the ground became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt. | 17They did this. Aaron stretched his hand out with his staff, struck the dust of the land, and gnats came on people and animals—all the dust of the ground became gnats throughout the land of Egypt. |
When the magicians attempted to bring forth gnats by their secret arts, they could not. So there were gnats on people and on animals. | 18The magicians tried to do the same thing with their secret arts, but they were unable to bring out the gnats. The gnats were on the people and the animals. |
The magicians said to Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God!" But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. | 19The magicians told Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God!" But Pharaoh's heart was stubborn and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted. |
The LORD said to Moses, "Get up early in the morning and position yourself before Pharaoh as he goes out to the water, and tell him, 'Thus says the LORD, "Release my people that they may serve me! | 20The LORD told Moses, "Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he's going down to the water. You are to say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: "Let my people go so they can serve me. |
If you do not release my people, then I am going to send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people and in your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground they stand on. | 21But if you don't let my people go, I'll send swarms of insects upon you, your servants, your people, and your households. The houses of Egypt—and even the ground on which they stand—will be filled with swarms of insects. |
But on that day I will mark off the land of Goshen, where my people are staying, so that no swarms of flies will be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of this land. | 22On that day I'll treat the land of Goshen where my people live differently so that swarms of insects won't be there. As a result, you will know that I the LORD am in the midst of the land. |
I will put a division between my people and your people. This sign will take place tomorrow."'" | 23I'll make a distinction between my people and your people, and this sign will occur tomorrow."'" |
The LORD did so; a thick swarm of flies came into Pharaoh's house and into the houses of his servants, and throughout the whole land of Egypt the land was ruined because of the swarms of flies. | 24The LORD did this, and dense swarms of insects came into the house of Pharaoh and into the houses of his servants. The land was ruined throughout Egypt because of the swarms of insects. |
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God within the land." | 25Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, offer sacrifices to your God in the land." |
But Moses said, "That would not be the right thing to do, for the sacrifices we make to the LORD our God would be an abomination to the Egyptians. If we make sacrifices that are an abomination to the Egyptians right before their eyes, will they not stone us? | 26"It wouldn't be right to sacrifice in this way," Moses replied, "because if we do, we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is offensive to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices that are offensive to the Egyptians in front of them, they'll stone us, won't they? |
We must go on a three-day journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, just as he is telling us." | 27We must go a three-day journey into the desert, and we'll offer sacrifices to the LORD our God just as he has told us." |
Pharaoh said, "I will release you so that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the desert. Only you must not go very far. Do pray for me." | 28Then Pharaoh said, "I'll let you go so you can offer sacrifices to the LORD your God in the desert. But you must not go very far away. Pray for me." |
Moses said, "I am going to go out from you and pray to the LORD, and the swarms of flies will go away from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow. Only do not let Pharaoh deal falsely again by not releasing the people to sacrifice to the LORD." | 29Moses said, "Right now I'm going to leave you, and I'll pray to the LORD that the swarms of insects may depart from Pharaoh, from his officials, and from his people tomorrow. But Pharaoh, don't continue lying by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the LORD." |
So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD, | 30Then Moses left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to the LORD. |
and the LORD did as Moses asked--he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained! | 31The LORD did what Moses asked, and the swarms of insects departed from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. Not one remained. |
But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and did not release the people. | 32But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart, and he did not let the people go. |
