Meanwhile, when many thousands of the crowd had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.1In these circumstances, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to His disciples first: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing is secret that will not be made known.2There is nothing covered that won't be uncovered, nothing hidden that won't be made known.
So then whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops. 3Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more they can do.4"And I say to you, My friends, don't fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.
But I will warn you whom you should fear: Fear the one who, after the killing, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!5But I will show you the One to fear: Fear Him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the One to fear!
Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.6Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.
In fact, even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows. 7Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!
"I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before God's angels.8"And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God,
But the one who denies me before men will be denied before God's angels.9but whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the person who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.10Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
But when they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you should make your defense or what you should say,11Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don't worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say.
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you must say." 12For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said."
Then someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."13Someone from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."
But Jesus said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator between you two?"14"Friend," He said to him, "who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?"
Then he said to them, "Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."15He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions."
He then told them a parable: "The land of a certain rich man produced an abundant crop,16Then He told them a parable: "A rich man's land was very productive.
so he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?'17He thought to himself, What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops?
Then he said, 'I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.18I will do this,' he said. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there.
And I will say to myself, "You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!"'19Then I'll say to myself, "You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."'
But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you, but who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'20"But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared--whose will they be?'
So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God." 21"That's how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear.22Then He said to His disciples: "Therefore I tell you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.
For there is more to life than food, and more to the body than clothing.23For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.
Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than the birds!24Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than the birds?
And which of you by worrying can add an hour to his life?25Can any of you add a cubit to his height by worrying?
So if you cannot do such a very little thing as this, why do you worry about the rest?26If then you're not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?
Consider how the flowers grow; they do not work or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these!27"Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don't labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these!
And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, how much more will he clothe you, you people of little faith!28If that's how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will He do for you--you of little faith?
So do not be overly concerned about what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not worry about such things.29Don't keep striving for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don't be anxious.
For all the nations of the world pursue these things, and your Father knows that you need them.30For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.
Instead, pursue his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. 31"But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you.
"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is well pleased to give you the kingdom.32Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom.
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide yourselves purses that do not wear out--a treasure in heaven that never decreases, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won't grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"Get dressed for service and keep your lamps burning;35"Be ready for service and have your lamps lit.
be like people waiting for their master to come back from the wedding celebration, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.36You must be like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.
Blessed are those slaves whom their master finds alert when he returns! I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, have them take their place at the table, and will come and wait on them!37Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.
Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night and finds them alert, blessed are those slaves!38If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn, and finds them alert, those slaves are blessed.
But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.39But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." 40You also be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.""
Then Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?"41Lord," Peter asked, "are You telling this parable to us or to everyone?"
The Lord replied, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his household servants, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time?42The Lord said: "Who then is the faithful and sensible manager his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food at the proper time?
Blessed is that slave whom his master finds at work when he returns.43That slave whose master finds him working when he comes will be rewarded.
I tell you the truth, the master will put him in charge of all his possessions.44I tell you the truth: He will put him in charge of all his possessions.
But if that slave should say to himself, 'My master is delayed in returning,' and he begins to beat the other slaves, both men and women, and to eat, drink, and get drunk,45But if that slave says in his heart, My master is delaying his coming,' and starts to beat the male and female slaves, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
then the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not foresee, and will cut him in two, and assign him a place with the unfaithful.46that slave's master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
That servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or do what his master asked will receive a severe beating.47And that slave who knew his master's will and didn't prepare himself or do it will be severely beaten.
But the one who did not know his master's will and did things worthy of punishment will receive a light beating. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked. 48But the one who did not know and did things deserving of blows will be beaten lightly. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more.
"I have come to bring fire on the earth--and how I wish it were already kindled!49"I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!
I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is finished!50But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how it consumes Me until it is finished!
Do you think I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!51Do you think that I came here to give peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!
For from now on there will be five in one household divided, three against two and two against three.52From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.
They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." 53They will be divided, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Jesus also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, 'A rainstorm is coming,' and it does.54He also said to the crowds: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, A storm is coming,' and so it does.
And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat,' and there is.55And when the south wind is blowing, you say, It's going to be a scorcher!' and it is.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how can you not know how to interpret the present time? 56Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don't you know how to interpret this time?
"And why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?57"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
As you are going with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, so that he will not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.58As you are going with your adversary to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won't drag you before the judge, the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.
I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the very last cent!" 59I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last cent."
