1Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

1Praise the LORD! Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.

2Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the LORD, Or can show forth all His praise?

2Who can list the glorious miracles of the LORD? Who can ever praise him enough?

3How blessed are those who keep justice, Who practice righteousness at all times!

3There is joy for those who deal justly with others and always do what is right.

4Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor toward Your people; Visit me with Your salvation,

4Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people; come near and rescue me.

5That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance.

5Let me share in the prosperity of your chosen ones. Let me rejoice in the joy of your people; let me praise you with those who are your heritage.

6We have sinned like our fathers, We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly.

6Like our ancestors, we have sinned. We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!

7Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember Your abundant kindnesses, But rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.

7Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the LORD’s miraculous deeds. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea.

8Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name, That He might make His power known.

8Even so, he saved them— to defend the honor of his name and to demonstrate his mighty power.

9Thus He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up, And He led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness.

9He commanded the Red Sea to dry up. He led Israel across the sea as if it were a desert.

10So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

10So he rescued them from their enemies and redeemed them from their foes.

11The waters covered their adversaries; Not one of them was left.

11Then the water returned and covered their enemies; not one of them survived.

12Then they believed His words; They sang His praise.

12Then his people believed his promises. Then they sang his praise.

13They quickly forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel,

13Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done! They wouldn’t wait for his counsel!

14But craved intensely in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert.

14In the wilderness their desires ran wild, testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.

15So He gave them their request, But sent a wasting disease among them.

15So he gave them what they asked for, but he sent a plague along with it.

16When they became envious of Moses in the camp, And of Aaron, the holy one of the LORD,

16The people in the camp were jealous of Moses and envious of Aaron, the LORD’s holy priest.

17The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And engulfed the company of Abiram.

17Because of this, the earth opened up; it swallowed Dathan and buried Abiram and the other rebels.

18And a fire blazed up in their company; The flame consumed the wicked.

18Fire fell upon their followers; a flame consumed the wicked.

19They made a calf in Horeb And worshiped a molten image.

19The people made a calf at Mount Sinai ; they bowed before an image made of gold.

20Thus they exchanged their glory For the image of an ox that eats grass.

20They traded their glorious God for a statue of a grass-eating bull.

21They forgot God their Savior, Who had done great things in Egypt,

21They forgot God, their savior, who had done such great things in Egypt—

22Wonders in the land of Ham And awesome things by the Red Sea.

22such wonderful things in the land of Ham, such awesome deeds at the Red Sea.

23Therefore He said that He would destroy them, Had not Moses His chosen one stood in the breach before Him, To turn away His wrath from destroying them.

23So he declared he would destroy them. But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the LORD and the people. He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them.

24Then they despised the pleasant land; They did not believe in His word,

24The people refused to enter the pleasant land, for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them.

25But grumbled in their tents; They did not listen to the voice of the LORD.

25Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the LORD.

26Therefore He swore to them That He would cast them down in the wilderness,

26Therefore, he solemnly swore that he would kill them in the wilderness,

27And that He would cast their seed among the nations And scatter them in the lands.

27that he would scatter their descendants among the nations, exiling them to distant lands.

28They joined themselves also to Baal-peor, And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.

28Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor; they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead!

29Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, And the plague broke out among them.

29They angered the LORD with all these things, so a plague broke out among them.

30Then Phinehas stood up and interposed, And so the plague was stayed.

30But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped.

31And it was reckoned to him for righteousness, To all generations forever.

31So he has been regarded as a righteous man ever since that time.

32They also provoked Him to wrath at the waters of Meribah, So that it went hard with Moses on their account;

32At Meribah, too, they angered the LORD, causing Moses serious trouble.

33Because they were rebellious against His Spirit, He spoke rashly with his lips.

33They made Moses angry, and he spoke foolishly.

34They did not destroy the peoples, As the LORD commanded them,

34Israel failed to destroy the nations in the land, as the LORD had commanded them.

35But they mingled with the nations And learned their practices,

35Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs.

36And served their idols, Which became a snare to them.

36They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall.

37They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons,

37They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons.

38And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with the blood.

38They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder.

39Thus they became unclean in their practices, And played the harlot in their deeds.

39They defiled themselves by their evil deeds, and their love of idols was adultery in the LORD’s sight.

40Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people And He abhorred His inheritance.

40That is why the LORD’s anger burned against his people, and he abhorred his own special possession.

41Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, And those who hated them ruled over them.

41He handed them over to pagan nations, and they were ruled by those who hated them.

42Their enemies also oppressed them, And they were subdued under their power.

42Their enemies crushed them and brought them under their cruel power.

43Many times He would deliver them; They, however, were rebellious in their counsel, And so sank down in their iniquity.

43Again and again he rescued them, but they chose to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed by their sin.

44Nevertheless He looked upon their distress When He heard their cry;

44Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries.

45And He remembered His covenant for their sake, And relented according to the greatness of His lovingkindness.

45He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love.

46He also made them objects of compassion In the presence of all their captors.

46He even caused their captors to treat them with kindness.

47Save us, O LORD our God, And gather us from among the nations, To give thanks to Your holy name And glory in Your praise.

47Save us, O LORD our God! Gather us back from among the nations, so we can thank your holy name and rejoice and praise you.

48Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, "Amen." Praise the LORD!

48Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the LORD!
