Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, | 1Afterward he was traveling from one town and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, |
and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, | 2and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, called Magdalene (seven demons had come out of her); |
and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means. | 3Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions. |
When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable: | 4As a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to Jesus from every town, he said in a parable: |
"The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the air ate it up. | 5"A sower went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some seed fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky devoured it. |
"Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. | 6Other seed fell on the rock; when it grew up, it withered away, since it lacked moisture. |
"Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. | 7Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns grew up with it and choked it. |
"Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great." As He said these things, He would call out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." | 8Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown." As he said this, he called out, "Let anyone who has ears to hear listen." |
His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant. | 9Then his disciples asked him, "What does this parable mean?" |
And He said, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that SEEING THEY MAY NOT SEE, AND HEARING THEY MAY NOT UNDERSTAND. | 10So he said, "The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. |
"Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. | 11"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. |
"Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. | 12The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. |
"Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. | 13And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing. |
"The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. | 14As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit. |
"But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. | 15But the seed in the good ground--these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit. |
"Now no one after lighting a lamp covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light. | 16"No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light. |
"For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light. | 17For nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing hidden that won't be made known and brought to light. |
"So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him." | 18Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him." |
And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd. | 19Then his mother and brothers came to him, but they could not meet with him because of the crowd. |
And it was reported to Him, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You." | 20He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." |
But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it." | 21But he replied to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do the word of God." |
Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." So they launched out. | 22One day he and his disciples got into a boat, and he told them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out, |
But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. | 23and as they were sailing he fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger. |
They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. | 24They came and woke him up, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to die!" Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm. |
And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?" | 25He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, "Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him!" |
Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. | 26Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. |
And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs. | 27When he got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs. |
Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me." | 28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and said in a loud voice, "What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torment me!" |
For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. | 29For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places. |
And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. | 30"What is your name?" Jesus asked him. "Legion," he said, because many demons had entered him. |
They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss. | 31And they begged him not to banish them to the abyss. |
Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission. | 32A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged him to permit them to enter the pigs, and he gave them permission. |
And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. | 33The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned. |
When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country. | 34When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside. |
The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. | 35Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus's feet, dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. |
Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well. | 36Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered. |
And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. | 37Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked him to leave them, because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, he returned. |
But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying, | 38The man from whom the demons had departed begged him earnestly to be with him. But he sent him away and said, |
"Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him. | 39"Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you." And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town how much Jesus had done for him. |
And as Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. | 40When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. |
And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus' feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house; | 41Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus's feet and pleaded with him to come to his house, |
for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him. | 42because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying. While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him. |
And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, | 43A woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years, who had spent all she had on doctors and yet could not be healed by any, |
came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. | 44approached from behind and touched the end of his robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped. |
And Jesus said, "Who is the one who touched Me?" And while they were all denying it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You." | 45"Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you." |
But Jesus said, "Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me." | 46"Someone did touch me," said Jesus. "I know that power has gone out from me." |
When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. | 47When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched him and how she was instantly healed. |
And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." | 48"Daughter," he said to her, "your faith has saved you. Go in peace." |
While He was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore." | 49While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the teacher anymore." |
But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, "Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be made well." | 50When Jesus heard it, he answered him, "Don't be afraid. Only believe, and she will be saved." |
When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl's father and mother. | 51After he came to the house, he let no one enter with him except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother. |
Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, "Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep." | 52Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But he said, "Stop crying, because she is not dead but asleep." |
And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. | 53They laughed at him, because they knew she was dead. |
He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, "Child, arise!" | 54So he took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up!" |
And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat. | 55Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then he gave orders that she be given something to eat. |
Her parents were amazed; but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened. | 56Her parents were astounded, but he instructed them to tell no one what had happened. |
