1Now when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John—

1Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

2although it was not Jesus who did the baptizing but his disciples—

2(although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were),

3he left Judea and went back to Galilee.

3He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.

4Now it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.

4And He had to pass through Samaria.

5So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

5So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph;

6Jacob's Well was also there, and Jesus, tired out by the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

6and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus told her, "Please give me a drink,"

7There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."

8since his disciples had gone off into town to buy food.

8For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9The Samaritan woman asked him, "How can you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" Because Jews do not have anything to do with Samaritans.

9Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, 'Please give me a drink,' you would have been the one to ask him, and he would have given you living water."

10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."

11The woman told him, "Sir, you don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this living water?

11She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?

12You're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it, along with his sons and his flocks, are you?"

12"You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?"

13Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks this water will become thirsty again.

13Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;

14But whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never become thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become a well of water for him, springing up to eternal life."

14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

15The woman told him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I won't get thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."

15The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw."

16He told her, "Go and call your husband, and come back here."

16He said to her, "Go, call your husband and come here."

17The woman answered him, "I don't have a husband." Jesus told her, "You are quite right in saying, 'I don't have a husband,'

17The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have correctly said, 'I have no husband';

18because you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."

18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly."

19The woman told him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet!

19The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

20Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain. But you Jews say that the place where people should worship is in Jerusalem."

20"Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."

21Jesus told her, "Believe me, dear lady, the hour is coming when you Samaritans will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

22You don't know what you're worshiping. We Jews know what we're worshiping, because salvation comes from the Jews.

22"You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

23Yet the time is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Indeed, the Father is looking for people like that to worship him.

23"But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.

24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

24"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

25The woman told him, "I know that the Anointed One is coming, who is being called 'the Messiah'. When that person comes, he will explain everything."

25The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us."

26"I am he," Jesus replied, "the one who is speaking to you."

26Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He."

27At this point his disciples arrived, and they were astonished that he was talking to a woman. Yet no one said, "What do you want from her?" or, "Why are you talking to her?"

27At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why do You speak with her?"

28Then the woman left her water jar and went back to town. She told people,

28So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,

29"Come, see a man who told me everything I've ever done! Could he possibly be the Messiah?"

29"Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?"

30The people left the town and started on their way to him.

30They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

31Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, have something to eat."

31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."

32But he told them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."

32But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about."

33So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one has brought him anything to eat, have they?"

34Jesus told them, "My food is doing the will of the one who sent me and completing his work.

34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.

35You say, don't you, 'In four more months the harvest will begin?' Look, I tell you, open your eyes and observe that the fields are ready for harvesting now!

35"Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest '? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.

36The one who harvests is already receiving his wages and gathering a crop for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who harvests may rejoice together.

36"Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

37In this respect the saying is true: 'One person sows, and another person harvests.'

37"For in this case the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.'

38I have sent you to harvest what you have not worked for. Others have worked, and you have adopted their work as your own."

38"I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."

39Now many of the Samaritans of that town believed in Jesus because the woman had testified, "He told me everything I've ever done."

39From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all the things that I have done."

40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there for two days.

41And many more believed because of what he said.

42They kept telling the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, because now we have heard him ourselves, and we know that he really is the Savior of the world."

42and they were saying to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world."

43Two days later, Jesus left for Galilee from there,

43After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee.

44since Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

45When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen everything that he had done in Jerusalem during the festival and because they, too, had gone to the festival.

45So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

46So Jesus returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Meanwhile, in Capernaum there was a government official whose son was ill.

46Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum.

47When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him repeatedly to come down and heal his son, because he was about to die.

47When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.

48Jesus told him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe."

48So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe."

49The official told him, "Sir, please come down before my little boy dies."

49The royal official said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."

50Jesus told him, "Go home. Your son will live." The man believed what Jesus told him and started back home.

50Jesus said to him, "Go; your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.

51While he was on his way, his servants met him and told him that his child was alive.

51As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living.

52So he asked them at what hour he had begun to recover, and they told him, "The fever left him yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon."

52So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."

53Then the father realized that this was the very hour when Jesus had told him, "Your son will live." So he himself believed, along with his whole family.

53So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives"; and he himself believed and his whole household.

54Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

54This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
