Judgment on Egypt

1  אֲשֶׁ֨ר (That which) הָיָ֧ה (was) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) עַל־ (concerning) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations); 2  לְמִצְרַ֗יִם (for Egypt), עַל־ (concerning) חֵ֨יל (the army) פַּרְעֹ֤ה (of Pharaoh) נְכוֹ֙ (Neco) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) הָיָ֥ה (was) עַל־ (alongside) נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָ֖ת (Euphrates) בְּכַרְכְּמִ֑שׁ (in Carchemish), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (and which) הִכָּ֗ה (struck) נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֙ (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon) בִּשְׁנַת֙ (in the year) הָֽרְבִיעִ֔ית (fourth) לִיהוֹיָקִ֥ים (of Jehoiakim) בֶּן־ (son) יֹאשִׁיָּ֖הוּ (of Josiah) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah).

3  עִרְכ֤וּ (Arrange) מָגֵן֙ (the buckler) וְצִנָּ֔ה (and shield),

וּגְשׁ֖וּ (and draw near) לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (for the battle).

4  אִסְר֣וּ (Harness) הַסּוּסִ֗ים (the horses); וַֽעֲלוּ֙ (and mount up), הַפָּ֣רָשִׁ֔ים (O horsemen),

וְהִֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ (and take your stand) בְּכ֥וֹבָעִ֑ים (with helmets on);

מִרְקוּ֙ (polish) הָֽרְמָחִ֔ים (the spears),

לִבְשׁ֖וּ (and put on) הַסִּרְיֹנֹֽת׃ (the armor).

5  מַדּ֣וּעַ (Why) רָאִ֗יתִי (have I seen it)

הֵ֣מָּה (They) חַתִּים֮ (are terrified)

נְסֹגִ֣ים (they are turning) אָחוֹר֒ (back)?

וְגִבּוֹרֵיהֶ֣ם (And their mighty ones) יֻכַּ֔תּוּ (are crushed),

וּמָנ֥וֹס (and in haste) נָ֖סוּ (they have fled), וְלֹ֣א (not even) הִפְנ֑וּ (did they turn);

מָג֥וֹר (fear was) מִסָּבִ֖יב (all around),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

6  אַל־ (Cannot) יָנ֣וּס (flee), הַקַּ֔ל (the swift)

וְאַל־ (and not) יִמָּלֵ֖ט (can escape); הַגִּבּ֑וֹר (the mighty one)

צָפ֙וֹנָה֙ (in the north) עַל־ (alongside) יַ֣ד (-) נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָ֔ת (Euphrates).

כָּשְׁל֖וּ (They stumble), וְנָפָֽלוּ׃ (and fall).

7  מִי־ (Who is) זֶ֖ה (this) כַּיְאֹ֣ר (like the River), יַֽעֲלֶ֑ה (coming up)

כַּנְּהָר֕וֹת (like the rivers)? יִֽתְגָּעֲשׁ֖וּ (With their surging) מֵימָֽיו׃ (waters).

8  מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (Egypt) כַּיְאֹ֣ר (like the River), יַֽעֲלֶ֔ה (rises up)

וְכַנְּהָר֖וֹת (and like the rivers); יִתְגֹּ֣עֲשׁוּ (surge) מָ֑יִם (its waters)

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and he says), אַֽעֲלֶה֙ (I will go up), אֲכַסֶּה־ (and will cover) אֶ֔רֶץ (the earth);

אֹבִ֥ידָה (and I will destroy) עִ֖יר (the city) וְיֹ֥שְׁבֵי (and those dwelling) בָֽהּ׃ (in it).

9  עֲל֤וּ (Come up), הַסּוּסִים֙ (O horses); וְהִתְהֹלְל֣וּ (and rage), הָרֶ֔כֶב (O chariots);

וְיֵצְא֖וּ (and let come forth); הַגִּבּוֹרִ֑ים (the mighty ones)

כּ֤וּשׁ (Cush) וּפוּט֙ (and Put), תֹּפְשֵׂ֣י (handling) מָגֵ֔ן (the shield);

וְלוּדִ֕ים (and the Lydians), תֹּפְשֵׂ֖י (handling) דֹּ֥רְכֵי (and bending) קָֽשֶׁת׃ (the bow).

10  וְֽהַיּ֨וֹם (And the day) הַה֜וּא (that) לַאדֹנָ֧י (is unto the Lord) יְהוִ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֗וֹת (hosts),

י֤וֹם (a day) נְקָמָה֙ (of vengeance), לְהִנָּקֵ֣ם (to avenge Himself) מִצָּרָ֔יו (on His adversaries);

וְאָכְלָ֥ה (and will devour), חֶ֙רֶב֙ (the sword) וְשָׂ֣בְעָ֔ה (and be satisfied)

וְרָוְתָ֖ה (and made drunk) מִדָּמָ֑ם (with their blood);

כִּ֣י (for) זֶ֠בַח (a sacrifice) לַאדֹנָ֨י (is unto the Lord) יְהוִ֧ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֛וֹת (Hosts)

בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) צָפ֖וֹן (of the north) אֶל־ (by) נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָֽת׃ (Euphrates).

11  עֲלִ֤י (Go up) גִלְעָד֙ (to Gilead), וּקְחִ֣י (and take) צֳרִ֔י (balm),

בְּתוּלַ֖ת (O virgin), בַּת־ (daughter) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt)!

לַשָּׁוְא֙ (In vain) הִרְבֵּיתִי (you have multiplied) רְפֻא֔וֹת (remedies);

תְּעָלָ֖ה (a healing) אֵ֥ין (there is not) לָֽךְ׃ (for you).

12  שָׁמְע֤וּ (Have heard) גוֹיִם֙ (the nations) קְלוֹנֵ֔ךְ (of your shame),

וְצִוְחָתֵ֖ךְ (and your outcry) מָלְאָ֣ה (has filled) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land);

כִּֽי־ (for) גִבּ֤וֹר (mighty one) בְּגִבּוֹר֙ (against mighty one), כָּשָׁ֔לוּ (has stumbled)

יַחְדָּ֖יו (together). נָפְל֥וּ (Have fallen) שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃פ (the two of them).

13  הַדָּבָר֙ (The word) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (spoke) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֑יא (the prophet), לָב֗וֹא (regarding the coming of) נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֙ (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon) לְהַכּ֖וֹת (to strike) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

14  הַגִּ֤ידוּ (Declare it) בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (in Egypt), וְהַשְׁמִ֣יעוּ (and let it be heard) בְמִגְדּ֔וֹל (in Migdol),

וְהַשְׁמִ֥יעוּ (and let it also be heard) בְנֹ֖ף (in Noph) וּבְתַחְפַּנְחֵ֑ס (and in Tahpanhes); אִמְר֗וּ (say)

הִתְיַצֵּב֙ (Stand fast), וְהָכֵ֣ן (and prepare) לָ֔ךְ (yourselves)

כִּֽי־ (for) אָכְלָ֥ה (will devour) חֶ֖רֶב (the sword) סְבִיבֶֽיךָ׃ (those around you).

15  מַדּ֖וּעַ (Why) נִסְחַ֣ף (have been laid low)? אַבִּירֶ֑יךָ (Your mighty ones)

לֹ֣א (not), עָמַ֔ד (has he stood) כִּ֥י (because) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) הֲדָפֽוֹ׃ (has thrust him away).

16  הִרְבָּ֖ה (He has multiplied) כּוֹשֵׁ֑ל (those stumbling),

גַּם־ (yes), נָפַ֞ל (has fallen) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) אֶל־ (upon) רֵעֵ֗הוּ (his neighbor).

וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (And they say), ק֣וּמָה׀ (Stand up), וְנָשֻׁ֣בָה (and let us return) אֶל־ (to) עַמֵּ֗נוּ (our people),

וְאֶל־ (and to) אֶ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) מֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֔נוּ (of our birth),

מִפְּנֵ֖י (from the face) חֶ֥רֶב (of the sword of) הַיּוֹנָֽה׃ (the oppressor).

17  קָרְא֖וּ (They call out) שָׁ֑ם (there),

פַּרְעֹ֤ה (Pharaoh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) שָׁא֔וֹן (a loud noise);

הֶעֱבִ֖יר (he has let pass by) הַמּוֹעֵֽד׃ (the appointed time).

18  חַי־ (As live), אָ֙נִי֙ (I) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the King),

יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts), שְׁמ֑וֹ (is His name)

כִּ֚י (surely) כְּתָב֣וֹר (like Tabor) בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים (among the mountains), וּכְכַרְמֶ֖ל (and like Carmel)

בַּיָּ֥ם (by the sea), יָבֽוֹא׃ (he will come).

19  כְּלֵ֤י (Vessels) גוֹלָה֙ (for exile), עֲשִׂ֣י (you will make) לָ֔ךְ (for yourself)

יוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת (O dweller) בַּת־ (and daughter) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt),

כִּֽי־ (for) נֹף֙ (Memphis) לְשַׁמָּ֣ה (as a waste) תִֽהְיֶ֔ה (will become)

וְנִצְּתָ֖ה (and will be made desolate) מֵאֵ֥ין (without) יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ס (one dwelling there).

20  עֶגְלָ֥ה (A heifer), יְפֵֽה־ (beautiful) פִיָּ֖ה (beautiful) מִצְרָ֑יִם (is Egypt)

קֶ֥רֶץ (a biting fly) מִצָּפ֖וֹן (from the north). בָּ֥א (Is coming); בָֽא׃ (is coming).

21  גַּם־ (Even) שְׂכִרֶ֤יהָ (her hirelings) בְקִרְבָּהּ֙ (among her)

כְּעֶגְלֵ֣י (are like calves); מַרְבֵּ֔ק (of the stall)

כִּֽי־ (for) גַם־ (also) הֵ֧מָּה (they) הִפְנ֛וּ (have turned back),

נָ֥סוּ (they have fled away) יַחְדָּ֖יו (together); לֹ֣א (not) עָמָ֑דוּ (they have stood),

כִּ֣י (for) י֥וֹם (the day) אֵידָ֛ם (of their calamity) בָּ֥א (has come) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (upon them)

עֵ֥ת (the time) פְּקֻדָּתָֽם׃ (of their punishment).

22  קוֹלָ֖הּ (Her noise is) כַּנָּחָ֣שׁ (like a serpent); יֵלֵ֑ךְ (that goes away)

כִּֽי־ (for) בְחַ֣יִל (with a force), יֵלֵ֔כוּ (they go)

וּבְקַרְדֻּמּוֹת֙ (and with axes), בָּ֣אוּ (they come) לָ֔הּ (against her)

כְּחֹטְבֵ֖י (like those chopping down) עֵצִֽים׃ (trees).

23  כָּרְת֤וּ (They will cut down) יַעְרָהּ֙ (her forest), נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

כִּ֖י (though) לֹ֣א (not) יֵֽחָקֵ֑ר (it can be searched);

כִּ֤י (for) רַבּוּ֙ (they are more numerous) מֵֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה (than locusts),

וְאֵ֥ין (and there is not) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) מִסְפָּֽר׃ (numbering).

24  הֹבִ֖ישָׁה (Will be put to shame); בַּת־ (the daughter) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt)

נִתְּנָ֖ה (and she will be given) בְּיַ֥ד (into the hand) עַם־ (of the people) צָפֽוֹן׃ (of the north).

25  אָמַר֩ (Says); יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֜וֹת (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), הִנְנִ֤י (Behold, I) פוֹקֵד֙ (am bringing punishment) אֶל־ (against) אָמ֣וֹן (Amon) מִנֹּ֔א (of No) וְעַל־ (and upon) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh), וְעַל־ (and upon) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt), וְעַל־ (and upon) אֱלֹהֶ֖יהָ (their gods), וְעַל־ (and upon) מְלָכֶ֑יהָ (their kings); וְעַ֨ל־ (and upon) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), וְעַ֥ל (and upon) הַבֹּטְחִ֖ים (those trusting) בּֽוֹ׃ (in him). 26  וּנְתַתִּ֗ים (And I will given them) בְּיַד֙ (into the hand) מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י (of those seeking) נַפְשָׁ֔ם (their souls), וּבְיַ֛ד (and into the hand) נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר (of Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon), וּבְיַד־ (and into the hand) עֲבָדָ֑יו (of his servants). וְאַחֲרֵי־ (And after) כֵ֛ן (this) תִּשְׁכֹּ֥ן (it will be a dwelling place), כִּֽימֵי־ (as in days) קֶ֖דֶם (of old), נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

27  וְ֠אַתָּה (And you), אַל־ (not) תִּירָ֞א (should you be afraid) עַבְדִּ֤י (O My servant) יַֽעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob),

וְאַל־ (and not) תֵּחַ֣ת (should you be dismayed), יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (O Israel)!

כִּ֠י (For), הִנְנִ֤י (behold, I) מוֹשִֽׁעֲךָ֙ (am bringing you salvation) מֵֽרָח֔וֹק (from afar),

וְאֶֽת־ (and) זַרְעֲךָ֖ (your seed) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) שִׁבְיָ֑ם (of their captivity);

וְשָׁ֧ב (and will return), יַעֲק֛וֹב (Jacob) וְשָׁקַ֥ט (and he will have quiet) וְשַׁאֲנַ֖ן (and he will find rest),

וְאֵ֥ין (with no one) מַחֲרִֽיד׃ס (to make him afraid).

28  אַ֠תָּה (You) אַל־ (not), תִּירָ֞א (will fear) עַבְדִּ֤י (O My servant), יַֽעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), כִּ֥י (for) אִתְּךָ֖ (with you) אָ֑נִי (I am)

כִּי֩ (for) אֶעֱשֶׂ֨ה (I will make) כָלָ֜ה (a full end) בְּכָֽל־ (of all) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם׀ (the nations) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (to which) הִדַּחְתִּ֣יךָ (I have driven you) שָׁ֗מָּה (there)

וְאֹֽתְךָ֙ (and of you) לֹא־ (not) אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה (will I make) כָלָ֔ה (a full end)

וְיִסַּרְתִּ֙יךָ֙ (and I will discipline you) לַמִּשְׁפָּ֔ט (according to justice);

וְנַקֵּ֖ה (clearing) לֹ֥א (not) אֲנַקֶּֽךָּ׃ס (I will clear you).
