God’s Judgment on the Earth

1  הִנֵּ֧ה (Behold), יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בּוֹקֵ֥ק (is emptying) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the earth),

וּבֽוֹלְקָ֑הּ (and is making it waste),

וְעִוָּ֣ה (and He has twisted) פָנֶ֔יהָ (its surface),

וְהֵפִ֖יץ (and has scattered) יֹשְׁבֶֽיהָ׃ (its dwellers).

2  וְהָיָ֤ה (And it will be), כָעָם֙ (as with the people) כַּכֹּהֵ֔ן (so with the priest), כַּעֶ֙בֶד֙ (as with the servant) כַּֽאדֹנָ֔יו (so with his master),

כַּשִּׁפְחָ֖ה (as with the maidservant) כַּגְּבִרְתָּ֑הּ (so with her mistress), כַּקּוֹנֶה֙ (as with the buyer) כַּמּוֹכֵ֔ר (so with the seller),

כַּמַּלְוֶה֙ (as with the lender) כַּלֹּוֶ֔ה (so with the borrower), כַּנֹּשֶׁ֕ה (as with the creditor) כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (so with) נֹשֶׁ֥א (the lender) בֽוֹ׃ (of it).

3  הִבּ֧וֹק׀ (Being emptied) תִּבּ֛וֹק (will be emptied) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land)

וְהִבּ֣וֹז׀ (and being plundered) תִּבּ֑וֹז (will be plundered),

כִּ֣י (for) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) דִּבֶּ֖ר (has spoken) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the word) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

4  אָבְלָ֤ה (Has mourned) נָֽבְלָה֙ (and has faded away) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth);

אֻמְלְלָ֥ה (has languished) נָבְלָ֖ה (and has faded away) תֵּבֵ֑ל (the world),

אֻמְלָ֖לוּ (have languished) מְר֥וֹם (the haughty) עַם־ (people) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

5  וְהָאָ֥רֶץ (And the earth) חָנְפָ֖ה (is defiled) תַּ֣חַת (under) יֹשְׁבֶ֑יהָ (its dwellers)

כִּֽי־ (because) עָבְר֤וּ (they have transgressed) תוֹרֹת֙ (the laws);

חָ֣לְפוּ (they have passed ovr) חֹ֔ק (the decree),

הֵפֵ֖רוּ (they have broken) בְּרִ֥ית (the covenant) עוֹלָֽם׃ (everlasting).

6  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) אָלָה֙ (a curse) אָ֣כְלָה (has consumed) אֶ֔רֶץ (the earth),

וַֽיֶּאְשְׁמ֖וּ (and are found guilty) יֹ֣שְׁבֵי (those who dwell) בָ֑הּ (it); עַל־ (upon)

כֵּ֗ן (thus) חָרוּ֙ (have been burned) יֹ֣שְׁבֵי (the dwellers) אֶ֔רֶץ (of the earth),

וְנִשְׁאַ֥ר (and have been left) אֱנ֖וֹשׁ (men) מִזְעָֽר׃ (few).

7  אָבַ֥ל (Has failed) תִּיר֖וֹשׁ (the new wine); אֻמְלְלָה־ (has languished) גָ֑פֶן (the vine).

נֶאֶנְח֖וּ (Have groaned) כָּל־ (all) שִׂמְחֵי־ (the joyful) לֵֽב׃ (of heart).

8  שָׁבַת֙ (Has ceased) מְשׂ֣וֹשׂ (The joy) תֻּפִּ֔ים (of the tambourines);

חָדַ֖ל (has ended) שְׁא֣וֹן (the noise) עַלִּיזִ֑ים (of the jubilant ones);

שָׁבַ֖ת (has ceased) מְשׂ֥וֹשׂ (the joy) כִּנּֽוֹר׃ (of the harp).

9  בַּשִּׁ֖יר (With a song) לֹ֣א (not) יִשְׁתּוּ־ (they will drink) יָ֑יִן (wine);

יֵמַ֥ר (is bitter) שֵׁכָ֖ר (strong drink) לְשֹׁתָֽיו׃ (to those drinking it).

10  נִשְׁבְּרָ֖ה (Has been broken down) קִרְיַת־ (the city) תֹּ֑הוּ (of confusion);

סֻגַּ֥ר (is closed up) כָּל־ (every) בַּ֖יִת (house) מִבּֽוֹא׃ (from entering).

11  צְוָחָ֥ה (A cry) עַל־ (over) הַיַּ֖יִן (the wine) בַּֽחוּצ֑וֹת (is in the streets);

עָֽרְבָה֙ (is darkened) כָּל־ (all) שִׂמְחָ֔ה (joy);

גָּלָ֖ה (has been removed) מְשׂ֥וֹשׂ (the rejoicing) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

12  נִשְׁאַ֥ר (Has been left) בָּעִ֖יר (in the city) שַׁמָּ֑ה (a desolation),

וּשְׁאִיָּ֖ה (and into a ruin) יֻכַּת־ (is broken) שָֽׁעַר׃ (the gate).

13  כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֥ה (thus) יִהְיֶ֛ה (it shall be) בְּקֶ֥רֶב (within) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land)

בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הָֽעַמִּ֑ים (of the nations),

כְּנֹ֣קֶף (like the shaking) זַ֔יִת (of an olive tree),

כְּעוֹלֵלֹ֖ת (like the gleaning of grapes) אִם־ (when) כָּלָ֥ה (is done) בָצִֽיר׃ (the vintage).

14  הֵ֛מָּה (They) יִשְׂא֥וּ (will lift up) קוֹלָ֖ם (their voice),

יָרֹ֑נּוּ (they will sing); בִּגְא֣וֹן (of the majesty) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) צָהֲל֖וּ (they have cried aloud) מִיָּֽם׃ (from the sea).

15  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) בָּאֻרִ֖ים (in the dawning light) כַּבְּד֣וּ (glorify) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH)—

בְּאִיֵּ֣י (in the islands) הַיָּ֔ם (of the sea), שֵׁ֥ם (the name) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH)

אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (of Israel).

16  מִכְּנַ֨ף (From the ends) הָאָ֜רֶץ (of the earth) זְמִרֹ֤ת (songs) שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ (we have heard):

צְבִ֣י (Glory) לַצַּדִּ֔יק (to the Righteous One).

וָאֹמַ֛ר (And I said), רָזִי־ (Leanness) לִ֥י (is unto me)! רָֽזִי־ (Leanness) לִ֖י (is unto me)!

א֣וֹי (Woe) לִ֑י (to me)!

בֹּגְדִ֣ים (Treacherous dealers) בָּגָ֔דוּ (have dealt treacherously);

וּבֶ֥גֶד (and with treachery)— בּוֹגְדִ֖ים (treacherous dealers) בָּגָֽדוּ׃ (have dealt treacherously).

17  פַּ֥חַד (Terror) וָפַ֖חַת (and pit) וָפָ֑ח (and snare) עָלֶ֖יךָ (are upon you),

יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (O dweller) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

18  וְֽ֠הָיָה (And it will come to pass) הַנָּ֞ס (that he who flees) מִקּ֤וֹל (from the sound) הַפַּ֙חַד֙ (of terror)

יִפֹּ֣ל (will fall) אֶל־ (into) הַפַּ֔חַת (the pit),

וְהָֽעוֹלֶה֙ (and he who comes up) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) הַפַּ֔חַת (of the pit)

יִלָּכֵ֖ד (will be caught) בַּפָּ֑ח (in the snare).

כִּֽי־ (For) אֲרֻבּ֤וֹת (the windows) מִמָּרוֹם֙ (on high) נִפְתָּ֔חוּ (have been opened),

וַֽיִּרְעֲשׁ֖וּ (and are shaken) מ֥וֹסְדֵי (the foundations) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

19  רֹ֥עָה (Being broken) הִֽתְרֹעֲעָ֖ה (has been broken apart) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth);

פּ֤וֹר (being split open) הִֽתְפּוֹרְרָה֙ (has been split open) אֶ֔רֶץ (the earth);

מ֥וֹט (being shaken) הִֽתְמוֹטְטָ֖ה (has been shaken) אָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

20  נ֣וֹעַ (Staggering) תָּנ֤וּעַ (will stagger) אֶ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) כַּשִּׁכּ֔וֹר (like a drunkard),

וְהִֽתְנוֹדְדָ֖ה (and it will totter) כַּמְּלוּנָ֑ה (like a hut).

וְכָבַ֤ד (And will be heavy) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (upon it) פִּשְׁעָ֔הּ (transgression),

וְנָפְלָ֖ה (and it will fall) וְלֹא־ (and not) תֹסִ֥יף (again) קֽוּם׃ס (rise).

21  וְהָיָה֙ (And it will come to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in day) הַה֔וּא (that), יִפְקֹ֧ד (that will lay a charge) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH)

עַל־ (upon) צְבָ֥א (the host) הַמָּר֖וֹם (of the high place) בַּמָּר֑וֹם (in the high place),

וְעַל־ (and) מַלְכֵ֥י (the kings) הָאֲדָמָ֖ה (of the earth) עַל־ (on) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (the earth).

22  וְאֻסְּפ֨וּ (And they will be gathered together)—

אֲסֵפָ֤ה (a gathering) אַסִּיר֙ (of bound ones) עַל־ (in) בּ֔וֹר (the pit),

וְסֻגְּר֖וּ (and they will be shut up) עַל־ (in) מַסְגֵּ֑ר (the prison),

וּמֵרֹ֥ב (and after a multitude) יָמִ֖ים (of days) יִפָּקֵֽדוּ׃ (they will be punished).

23  וְחָֽפְרָה֙ (And will be confounded) הַלְּבָנָ֔ה (the moon)

וּבוֹשָׁ֖ה (and will be ashamed) הַֽחַמָּ֑ה (the sun),

כִּֽי־ (for) מָלַ֞ךְ (will reign) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) צְבָא֗וֹת (of hosts)

בְּהַ֤ר (on Mount) צִיּוֹן֙ (Zion) וּבִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and in Jerusalem),

וְנֶ֥גֶד (and before) זְקֵנָ֖יו (His elders) כָּבֽוֹד׃פ (is glory).
