Isaiah 23

The Burden against Tyre
(Ezekiel 26:1–21)

1  מַשָּׂ֖א (The Burden) צֹ֑ר (of Tyre):

הֵילִ֣ילוּ׀ (Wail), אֳנִיּ֣וֹת (O ships) תַּרְשִׁ֗ישׁ (of Tarshish),

כִּֽי־ (for) שֻׁדַּ֤ד (it is laid waste),

מִבַּ֙יִת֙ (without house), מִבּ֔וֹא (without harbor),

מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) כִּתִּ֖ים (of Kittim)

נִגְלָה־ (it has been revealed) לָֽמוֹ׃ (to them).

2  דֹּ֖מּוּ (Be still), יֹ֣שְׁבֵי (O dwellers) אִ֑י (of the coastland),

סֹחֵ֥ר (merchants) צִיד֛וֹן (of Sidon),

עֹבֵ֥ר (whom those passing over) יָ֖ם (the sea) מִלְאֽוּךְ׃ (have filled).

3  וּבְמַ֤יִם (And on waters) רַבִּים֙ (great)

זֶ֣רַע (is the seed) שִׁחֹ֔ר (of Sihor);

קְצִ֥יר (the harvest) יְא֖וֹר (of the River) תְּבֽוּאָתָ֑הּ (is her revenue),

וַתְּהִ֖י (and she is) סְחַ֥ר (a marketplace) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (of nations).

4  בּ֣וֹשִׁי (Be ashamed), צִיד֔וֹן (O Sidon), כִּֽי־ (for) אָמַ֣ר (has spoken) יָ֔ם (the sea),

מָע֥וֹז (the strength) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying):

לֹֽא־ (Not), חַ֣לְתִּי (I have been pained)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָלַ֗דְתִּי (have I brought forth children),

וְלֹ֥א (and not) גִדַּ֛לְתִּי (have I nourished) בַּחוּרִ֖ים (young men),

רוֹמַ֥מְתִּי (or brought up) בְתוּלֽוֹת׃ (virgins).

5  כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־ (As) שֵׁ֖מַע (the report) לְמִצְרָ֑יִם (comes to Egypt),

יָחִ֖ילוּ (they will writhe in agony) כְּשֵׁ֥מַע (at the report) צֹֽר׃ (of Tyre).

6  עִבְר֖וּ (Pass over) תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה (to Tarshish);

הֵילִ֖ילוּ (Wail), יֹ֥שְׁבֵי (O dwellers) אִֽי׃ (of the coastland).

7  הֲזֹ֥את (Is this) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) עַלִּיזָ֑ה (jubilant one)

מִֽימֵי־ (is from days) קֶ֤דֶם (of old) קַדְמָתָהּ֙ (whose origin)

יֹבִל֣וּהָ (carried her) רַגְלֶ֔יהָ (her own feet)

מֵֽרָח֖וֹק (far away) לָגֽוּר׃ (to settle).

8  מִ֚י (Who) יָעַ֣ץ (has taken counsel) זֹ֔את (this) עַל־ (against) צֹ֖ר (Tyre),

הַמַּֽעֲטִירָ֑ה (the crowning one)

אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whose) סֹחֲרֶ֙יה֙ (merchants are) שָׂרִ֔ים (princes);

כִּנְעָנֶ֖יהָ (her traders are) נִכְבַּדֵּי־ (the honorable ones) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth)?

9  יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) צְבָא֖וֹת (of hosts) יְעָצָ֑הּ (has purposed it)

לְחַלֵּל֙ (to dishonor) גְּא֣וֹן (the pride) כָּל־ (of all) צְבִ֔י (glory),

לְהָקֵ֖ל (to shame) כָּל־ (all) נִכְבַּדֵּי־ (the honorable ones) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

10  עִבְרִ֥י (Pass over) אַרְצֵ֖ךְ (your land) כַּיְאֹ֑ר (like the Nile), בַּת־ (O daughter) תַּרְשִׁ֕ישׁ (of Tarshish),

אֵ֖ין (there is not) מֵ֥זַח (a girdle) עֽוֹד׃ (anymore).

11  יָדוֹ֙ (His hand) נָטָ֣ה (He has stretched out) עַל־ (over) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea),

הִרְגִּ֖יז (He has shaken) מַמְלָכ֑וֹת (the kingdoms).

יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) צִוָּ֣ה (has commanded) אֶל־ (against) כְּנַ֔עַן (Canaan)

לַשְׁמִ֖ד (to destroy) מָעֻזְנֶֽיהָ׃ (her strongholds).

12  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And He said), לֹֽא־ (Not) תוֹסִ֥יפִי (you will add) ע֖וֹד (again) לַעְל֑וֹז (to exult),

הַֽמְעֻשָּׁקָ֞ה (O oppressed) בְּתוּלַ֣ת (virgin) בַּת־ (daughter) צִיד֗וֹן (of Sidon).

כִּתִּיִּים (To Kittim) ק֣וּמִי (arise), עֲבֹ֔רִי (pass over),

גַּם־ (even) שָׁ֖ם (there) לֹא־ (not) יָנ֥וּחַֽ (is rest) לָֽךְ׃ (unto you).

13  הֵ֣ן׀ (Behold) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) כַּשְׂדִּ֗ים (of the Chaldeans),

זֶ֤ה (this) הָעָם֙ (people) לֹ֣א (not) הָיָ֔ה (was).

אַשּׁ֖וּר (Assyria) יְסָדָ֣הּ (has founded it) לְצִיִּ֑ים (for the desert creatures);

הֵקִ֣ימוּ (they set up) בְחִינָיו (its towers), עֹרְרוּ֙ (they raised up) אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ (its palaces)—

שָׂמָ֖הּ (He has appointed her) לְמַפֵּלָֽה׃ (to ruin).

14  הֵילִ֖ילוּ (Wail), אֳנִיּ֣וֹת (O ships) תַּרְשִׁ֑ישׁ (of Tarshish),

כִּ֥י (for) שֻׁדַּ֖ד (has been destroyed) מָעֻזְּכֶֽן׃ס (your⁺ refuge).

15  וְהָיָה֙ (And it will come to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in day) הַה֔וּא (that), וְנִשְׁכַּ֤חַת (will be forgotten) צֹר֙ (Tyre) שִׁבְעִ֣ים (seventy) שָׁנָ֔ה (years)— כִּימֵ֖י (as the days) מֶ֣לֶךְ (of king) אֶחָ֑ד (one). מִקֵּ֞ץ (At the end) שִׁבְעִ֤ים (of seventy) שָׁנָה֙ (years) יִהְיֶ֣ה (it will come to pass) לְצֹ֔ר (to Tyre) כְּשִׁירַ֖ת (as the song) הַזּוֹנָֽה׃ (of the harlot):

16  קְחִ֥י (Take) כִנּ֛וֹר (a harp),

סֹ֥בִּי (go about) עִ֖יר (the city),

זוֹנָ֣ה (O harlot) נִשְׁכָּחָ֑ה (forgotten);

הֵיטִ֤יבִי (make sweet) נַגֵּן֙ (melody),

הַרְבִּי־ (sing many) שִׁ֔יר (a song),

לְמַ֖עַן (so that) תִּזָּכֵֽרִי׃ (you may be remembered).

17  וְהָיָ֞ה (And it will come to pass) מִקֵּ֣ץ׀ (at the end) שִׁבְעִ֣ים (of seventy) שָׁנָ֗ה (years), יִפְקֹ֤ד (that will visit) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) צֹ֔ר (Tyre), וְשָׁבָ֖ה (and she will return) לְאֶתְנַנָּ֑ה (to her hire) וְזָֽנְתָ֛ה (and commit fornication) אֶת־ (with) כָּל־ (all) מַמְלְכ֥וֹת (the kingdoms) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the world) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the earth). 18  וְהָיָ֨ה (And will be) סַחְרָ֜הּ (her gain) וְאֶתְנַנָּ֗הּ (and her pay) קֹ֚דֶשׁ (set apart) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH); לֹ֥א (not) יֵֽאָצֵ֖ר (it will be stored up) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֵֽחָסֵ֑ן (laid up), כִּ֣י (for) לַיֹּשְׁבִ֞ים (unto those sitting) לִפְנֵ֤י (before) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) יִֽהְיֶ֣ה (will be) סַחְרָ֔הּ (her gain), לֶאֱכֹ֥ל (to eat) לְשָׂבְעָ֖ה (to satisfaction), וְלִמְכַסֶּ֥ה (and for a covering) עָתִֽיק׃פ (surpassing).
