A Prophecy against Tyre
(Isaiah 23:1–18)

1 וַיְהִ֛י (And it came to pass) בְּעַשְׁתֵּֽי־ (in the one) עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה (and tenth) שָׁנָ֖ה (year), בְּאֶחָ֣ד (on the first) לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ (of the month), הָיָ֥ה (that came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

2 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), יַ֠עַן (because) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אָ֨מְרָה (has said) צֹּ֤ר (Tyre) עַל־ (concerning) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (Jerusalem), הֶאָ֔ח (Aha), נִשְׁבְּרָ֛ה (she is broken) דַּלְת֥וֹת (the gate) הָעַמִּ֖ים (of the peoples); נָסֵ֣בָּה (she is turned over) אֵלָ֑י (to me) אִמָּלְאָ֖ה (I will be filled), הָחֳרָֽבָה׃ (she is destroyed);

3 לָכֵ֗ן (therefore) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); הִנְנִ֥י (Behold, I am) עָלַ֖יִךְ (against you) צֹ֑ר (O Tyre), וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֤י (and I will bring up) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (against you) גּוֹיִ֣ם (nations) רַבִּ֔ים (many) כְּהַעֲל֥וֹת (like the bringing up by) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) לְגַלָּֽיו׃ (its waves).

4 וְשִׁחֲת֞וּ (And they will destroy) חֹמ֣וֹת (the walls) צֹ֗ר (of Tyre), וְהָֽרְסוּ֙ (and they will throw down) מִגְדָּלֶ֔יהָ (her towers); וְסִֽחֵיתִ֥י (and I will scrape) עֲפָרָ֖הּ (her dust) מִמֶּ֑נָּה (from her) וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and will give) אוֹתָ֖הּ (her) לִצְחִ֥יחַ (as a clear place) סָֽלַע׃ (of a rock).

5 מִשְׁטַ֨ח (A spreading place) חֲרָמִ֤ים (of nets) תִּֽהְיֶה֙ (she will be) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הַיָּ֔ם (of the sea), כִּ֚י (for) אֲנִ֣י (I) דִבַּ֔רְתִּי (have spoken) נְאֻ֖ם (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH); וְהָיְתָ֥ה (and she will become) לְבַ֖ז (as plunder) לַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (for the nations).

6 וּבְנוֹתֶ֙יהָ֙ (And her daughters) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who are) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (on her mainland) בַּחֶ֖רֶב (by the sword); תֵּהָרַ֑גְנָה (will be slain) וְיָדְע֖וּ (and they will know) כִּי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).

7 כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); הִנְנִ֧י (Behold, I) מֵבִ֣יא (am bringing) אֶל־ (against) צֹ֗ר (Tyre) נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֧ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֛ל (of Babylon), מִצָּפ֖וֹן (from the north), מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) מְלָכִ֑ים (of kings), בְּס֛וּס (with horses), וּבְרֶ֥כֶב (and with chariots), וּבְפָרָשִׁ֖ים (and with horsemen), וְקָהָ֥ל (even an assembly), וְעַם־ (and a people) רָֽב׃ (numerous).

8 בְּנוֹתַ֥יִךְ (Your daughters) בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה (on the mainland); בַּחֶ֣רֶב (with the sword) יַהֲרֹ֑ג (he will slay) וְנָתַ֨ן (and he will set) עָלַ֜יִךְ (against you) דָּיֵ֗ק (a siege mound) וְשָׁפַ֤ךְ (and he will build) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (against you) סֹֽלְלָ֔ה (a wall) וְהֵקִ֥ים (and raise) עָלַ֖יִךְ (against you) צִנָּֽה׃ (a buckler).

9 וּמְחִ֣י (And the blow) קָֽבָלּ֔וֹ (of his battering ram) יִתֵּ֖ן (he will place) בְּחֹֽמוֹתָ֑יִךְ (against your walls), וּמִ֨גְדְּלֹתַ֔יִךְ (and your towers) יִתֹּ֖ץ (he will tear down) בְּחַרְבוֹתָֽיו׃ (with his swords).

10 מִשִּׁפְעַ֥ת (From the abundance) סוּסָ֖יו (of his horses) יְכַסֵּ֣ךְ (will cover you) אֲבָקָ֑ם (their dust) מִקּוֹל֩ (and from the noise) פָּרַ֨שׁ (of the horsemen), וְגַלְגַּ֜ל (and the wagons), וָרֶ֗כֶב (and the chariots), תִּרְעַ֙שְׁנָה֙ (will shake) חֽוֹמוֹתַ֔יִךְ (your walls) בְּבֹאוֹ֙ (in his coming) בִּשְׁעָרַ֔יִךְ (in your gates), כִּמְבוֹאֵ֖י (like those entering) עִ֥יר (a city) מְבֻקָּעָֽה׃ (having been breached).

11 בְּפַרְס֣וֹת (With the hooves) סוּסָ֔יו (of his horses) יִרְמֹ֖ס (he will trample) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חֽוּצוֹתָ֑יִךְ (your streets). עַמֵּךְ֙ (Your people) בַּחֶ֣רֶב (with the sword), יַהֲרֹ֔ג (he will slay) וּמַצְּב֥וֹת (and the pillars) עֻזֵּ֖ךְ (of your strength) לָאָ֥רֶץ (to the ground) תֵּרֵֽד׃ (will come down).

12 וְשָׁלְל֣וּ (And they will plunder) חֵילֵ֗ךְ (your riches), וּבָֽזְזוּ֙ (and they will seize) רְכֻלָּתֵ֔ךְ (your merchandise), וְהָֽרְסוּ֙ (and they will throw down) חוֹמוֹתַ֔יִךְ (your walls), וּבָתֵּ֥י (and the houses), חֶמְדָּתֵ֖ךְ (of your desire) יִתֹּ֑צוּ (they will tear down) וַאֲבָנַ֤יִךְ (and your stones) וְעֵצַ֙יִךְ֙ (and your timber) וַֽעֲפָרֵ֔ךְ (and your soil) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) מַ֖יִם (of the waters) יָשִֽׂימוּ׃ (they will put).

13 וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֖י (And I will make cease); הֲמ֣וֹן (the roar) שִׁירָ֑יִךְ (of your songs) וְק֣וֹל (and the sound) כִּנּוֹרַ֔יִךְ (of your harps) לֹ֥א (no) יִשָּׁמַ֖ע (will be heard) עֽוֹד׃ (anymore).

14 וּנְתַתִּ֞יךְ (And I will give you to be) לִצְחִ֣יחַ (as a clear place) סֶ֗לַע (of a rock); מִשְׁטַ֤ח (a spreading place) חֲרָמִים֙ (of nets); תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה (you will be) לֹ֥א (not) תִבָּנֶ֖ה (will you be rebuilt) ע֑וֹד (anymore), כִּ֣י (for) אֲנִ֤י (I) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH). דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי (Have spoken) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ס (YHWH).

15 כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֛ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH) לְצ֑וֹר (to Tyre); הֲלֹ֣א׀ (Will not) מִקּ֣וֹל (at the sound) מַפַּלְתֵּ֗ךְ (of your downfall), בֶּאֱנֹ֨ק (with the groaning), חָלָ֜ל (of the wounded) בֵּהָ֤רֵֽג (with the being slain) הֶ֙רֶג֙ (in slaughter) בְּתוֹכֵ֔ךְ (in your midst) יִרְעֲשׁ֖וּ (quake) הָאִיִּֽים׃ (the coastlands).

16 וְֽיָרְד֞וּ (And will come down) מֵעַ֣ל (from upon) כִּסְאוֹתָ֗ם (their thrones), כֹּ֚ל (all) נְשִׂיאֵ֣י (the princes) הַיָּ֔ם (of the sea) וְהֵסִ֙ירוּ֙ (and they will lay aside) אֶת־ (-) מְעִ֣ילֵיהֶ֔ם (their robes), וְאֶת־ (and) בִּגְדֵ֥י (the garments). רִקְמָתָ֖ם (Of their embroidery) יִפְשֹׁ֑טוּ (they will strip off) חֲרָד֤וֹת׀ (with trembling); יִלְבָּ֙שׁוּ֙ (they will clothe themselves) עַל־ (and upon) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the ground), יֵשֵׁ֔בוּ (they will sit) וְחָֽרְדוּ֙ (and tremble) לִרְגָעִ֔ים (at every moment), וְשָׁמְמ֖וּ (and they will be appalled) עָלָֽיִךְ׃ (over you).

17 וְנָשְׂא֨וּ (And they will take up) עָלַ֤יִךְ (over you) קִינָה֙ (a lamentation) וְאָ֣מְרוּ (and they will say) לָ֔ךְ (to you) אֵ֣יךְ (How) אָבַ֔דְתְּ (you have perished), נוֹשֶׁ֖בֶת (one inhabited) מִיַּמִּ֑ים (from the seas), הָעִ֣יר (O city), הַהֻלָּ֗לָה (renowned) אֲשֶׁר֩ (who) הָיְתָ֨ה (was) חֲזָקָ֤ה (strong) בַיָּם֙ (on the sea), הִ֣יא (she) וְיֹשְׁבֶ֔יהָ (and those dwelling in her), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) נָתְנ֥וּ (gave out) חִתִּיתָ֖ם (their terror) לְכָל־ (to all) יוֹשְׁבֶֽיהָ׃ (those dwelling by her).

18 עַתָּה֙ (Now) יֶחְרְד֣וּ (tremble) הָֽאִיִּ֔ן (the coastlands) י֖וֹם (on the day) מַפַּלְתֵּ֑ךְ (of your downfall); וְנִבְהֲל֛וּ (and are dismayed) הָאִיִּ֥ים (the islands) אֲשֶׁר־ (that are) בַּיָּ֖ם (in the sea) מִצֵּאתֵֽךְ׃ס (at your going out).

19 כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); בְּתִתִּ֤י (In My making) אֹתָךְ֙ (you) עִ֣יר (a city), נֶחֱרֶ֔בֶת (desolate) כֶּעָרִ֖ים (like the cities) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) נוֹשָׁ֑בוּ (inhabited); בְּהַעֲל֤וֹת (in bringing up) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (upon you) אֶת־ (-) תְּה֔וֹם (the deep) וְכִסּ֖וּךְ (so should cover you) הַמַּ֥יִם (the waters) הָרַבִּֽים׃ (great).

20 וְהוֹרַדְתִּיךְ֩ (And I will bring you down) אֶת־ (with) י֨וֹרְדֵי (those going down) ב֜וֹר (to the Pit), אֶל־ (to) עַ֣ם (the people) עוֹלָ֗ם (of old), וְ֠הוֹשַׁבְתִּיךְ (and I will make you dwell) בְּאֶ֨רֶץ (within the earth), תַּחְתִּיּ֜וֹת (in the places below) כָּחֳרָב֤וֹת (like the ruins) מֵֽעוֹלָם֙ (of old), אֶת־ (with) י֣וֹרְדֵי (those going down) ב֔וֹר (to the Pit), לְמַ֖עַן (so that) לֹ֣א (not) תֵשֵׁ֑בִי (will you be inhabited); וְנָתַתִּ֥י (or set) צְבִ֖י (in splendor) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) חַיִּֽים׃ (of the living);

21 בַּלָּה֥וֹת (a terror), אֶתְּנֵ֖ךְ (I will make you) וְאֵינֵ֑ךְ (and you will be no more) וּֽתְבֻקְשִׁ֗י (and you will be sought), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תִמָּצְאִ֥י (will you be found) עוֹד֙ (anymore), לְעוֹלָ֔ם (forever) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהֹוִֽה׃ס (YHWH).
