The Valley of Dry Bones

1  הָיְתָ֣ה (And came) עָלַי֮ (upon me) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוָה֒ (of YHWH) וַיּוֹצִאֵ֤נִי (and He brought me out) בְר֙וּחַ֙ (in the Spirit of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וַיְנִיחֵ֖נִי (and He set me down) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הַבִּקְעָ֑ה (of the valley) וְהִ֖יא (and it was) מְלֵאָ֥ה (full) עֲצָמֽוֹת׃ (of bones), 2  וְהֶעֱבִירַ֥נִי (and He caused me to pass) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (among them) סָבִ֣יב׀ (all) סָבִ֑יב (around), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold), רַבּ֤וֹת (many) מְאֹד֙ (very) עַל־ (were upon) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) הַבִּקְעָ֔ה (of the valley); וְהִנֵּ֖ה (and behold), יְבֵשׁ֥וֹת (they were dry) מְאֹֽד׃ (very).

3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), הֲתִחְיֶ֖ינָה (Can live)? הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת (The bones) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these)

וָאֹמַ֕ר (and I said), אֲדֹנָ֥י (O Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH), אַתָּ֥ה (You alone) יָדָֽעְתָּ׃ (know).

4  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) הִנָּבֵ֖א (Prophesy) עַל־ (to) הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת (the bones), הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these) וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) הָעֲצָמוֹת֙ (O bones), הַיְבֵשׁ֔וֹת (dry) שִׁמְע֖וּ (hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 5  כֹּ֤ה (Thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH) לָעֲצָמ֖וֹת (to the bones); הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these) הִנֵּ֨ה (behold), אֲנִ֜י (I) מֵבִ֥יא (am causing to enter) בָכֶ֛ם (into you⁺) ר֖וּחַ (breath) וִחְיִיתֶֽם׃ (and you⁺ will live); 6  וְנָתַתִּי֩ (and I will put) עֲלֵיכֶ֨ם (upon you⁺) גִּדִ֜ים (sinews) וְֽהַעֲלֵתִ֧י (and I will bring up) עֲלֵיכֶ֣ם (over you⁺) בָּשָׂ֗ר (flesh) וְקָרַמְתִּ֤י (and I will cover) עֲלֵיכֶם֙ (over you⁺) ע֔וֹר (with skin), וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and I will put) בָכֶ֛ם (within you⁺) ר֖וּחַ (breath) וִחְיִיתֶ֑ם (and you⁺ will live); וִידַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

7  וְנִבֵּ֖אתִי (And I prophesied) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) צֻוֵּ֑יתִי (I had been commanded); וַֽיְהִי־ (and there was) ק֤וֹל (a noise), כְּהִנָּֽבְאִי֙ (at my prophesying), וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold) רַ֔עַשׁ (a shaking), וַתִּקְרְב֣וּ (and drew together), עֲצָמ֔וֹת (the bones) עֶ֖צֶם (bone) אֶל־ (to) עַצְמֽוֹ׃ (bone). 8  וְרָאִ֜יתִי (And I looked), וְהִנֵּֽה־ (and behold), עֲלֵיהֶ֤ם (upon them) גִּדִים֙ (were sinews) וּבָשָׂ֣ר (and flesh) עָלָ֔ה (came up) וַיִּקְרַ֧ם (and covered) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (over them) ע֖וֹר (skin) מִלְמָ֑עְלָה (above it); וְר֖וּחַ (and breath) אֵ֥ין (there was not) בָּהֶֽם׃ (in them).

9  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) הִנָּבֵ֖א (Prophesy) אֶל־ (to) הָר֑וּחַ (the breath), הִנָּבֵ֣א (prophesy), בֶן־ (son) אָ֠דָם (of man), וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ (and say) אֶל־ (to) הָר֜וּחַ (the breath), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר׀ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) מֵאַרְבַּ֤ע (From the four) רוּחוֹת֙ (winds), בֹּ֣אִי (come) הָר֔וּחַ (O breath), וּפְחִ֛י (and breathe) בַּהֲרוּגִ֥ים (on the slain), הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) וְיִֽחְיֽוּ׃ (that they may live).

10  וְהִנַּבֵּ֖אתִי (And I prophesied) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) צִוָּ֑נִי (He had commanded me) וַתָּבוֹא֩ (and came) בָהֶ֨ם (into them) הָר֜וּחַ (the breath) וַיִּֽחְי֗וּ (and they lived), וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ (and they stood) עַל־ (on) רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם (their feet), חַ֖יִל (an army). גָּד֥וֹל (Great) מְאֹד־ (exceedingly) מְאֹֽד׃ס (greatly).

11  וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (And He said) אֵלַי֒ (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת (the bones) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) כָּל־ (the whole) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel); הֵ֑מָּה (they are) הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), אֹמְרִ֗ים (they are saying), יָבְשׁ֧וּ (Have dried up), עַצְמוֹתֵ֛ינוּ (our bones) וְאָבְדָ֥ה (and has perished). תִקְוָתֵ֖נוּ (Our hope) נִגְזַ֥רְנוּ (we have been cut off) לָֽנוּ׃ (by ourselves).

12  לָכֵן֩ (Therefore) הִנָּבֵ֨א (prophesy) וְאָמַרְתָּ֜ (and say) אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to them) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); הִנֵּה֩ (Behold), אֲנִ֨י (I) פֹתֵ֜חַ (am opening) אֶת־ (-) קִבְרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ graves), וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֥י (and I will bring up) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) מִקִּבְרוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (from your⁺ graves), עַמִּ֑י (O My people), וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י (and I will bring) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) אֶל־ (into) אַדְמַ֥ת (the land) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (of Israel). 13  וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), בְּפִתְחִ֣י (in My opening) אֶת־ (-) קִבְרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ graves), וּבְהַעֲלוֹתִ֥י (and in My bringing up) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) מִקִּבְרוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (from your⁺ graves), עַמִּֽי׃ (O My people), 14  וְנָתַתִּ֨י (and I will put) רוּחִ֤י (My Spirit) בָכֶם֙ (in you⁺) וִחְיִיתֶ֔ם (and you⁺ will live), וְהִנַּחְתִּ֥י (and I will settle) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) עַל־ (in) אַדְמַתְכֶ֑ם (your⁺ own land). וִידַעְתֶּ֞ם (And you⁺ will know) כִּי־ (that) אֲנִ֧י (I) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי (have spoken) וְעָשִׂ֖יתִי (and I have done it) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH).

One Nation with One King

15  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 16  וְאַתָּ֣ה (And you) בֶן־ (son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), קַח־ (take) לְךָ֙ (for yourself) עֵ֣ץ (a stick), אֶחָ֔ד (one) וּכְתֹ֤ב (and write) עָלָיו֙ (on it) לִֽיהוּדָ֔ה (For Judah), וְלִבְנֵ֥י (and for the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) חֲבֵרוֹ (his companions); וּלְקַח֙ (and take) עֵ֣ץ (stick), אֶחָ֔ד (one) וּכְת֣וֹב (and write) עָלָ֗יו (on it) לְיוֹסֵף֙ (For Joseph), עֵ֣ץ (the stick) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim), וְכָל־ (and for all) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) חֲבֵרוֹ׃ (his companions); 17  וְקָרַ֨ב (and join) אֹתָ֜ם (them) אֶחָ֧ד (one) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֛ד (one) לְךָ֖ (for yourself) לְעֵ֣ץ (as a stick); אֶחָ֑ד (into one) וְהָי֥וּ (and they will become) לַאֲחָדִ֖ים (as one) בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ (in your hand).

18  וְכַֽאֲשֶׁר֙ (And when) יֹאמְר֣וּ (speak) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) עַמְּךָ֖ (of your people) לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הֲלֽוֹא־ (Will not) תַגִּ֥יד (you show) לָ֖נוּ (to us) מָה־ (what) אֵ֥לֶּה (these) לָּֽךְ׃ (are to you?)? 19  דַּבֵּ֣ר (Say) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); הִנֵּה֩ (Behold), אֲנִ֨י (I) לֹקֵ֜חַ (I am taking) אֶת־ (-) עֵ֤ץ (the stick) יוֹסֵף֙ (of Joseph), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) בְּיַד־ (in the hand) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim), וְשִׁבְטֵ֥י (and the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) חֲבֵרוֹ (his companions), וְנָתַתִּי֩ (and I will join) אוֹתָ֨ם (them) עָלָ֜יו (upon it) אֶת־ (with) עֵ֣ץ (the stick) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah), וַֽעֲשִׂיתִם֙ (and I will make them) לְעֵ֣ץ (as a stick), אֶחָ֔ד (one) וְהָי֥וּ (and they will become) אֶחָ֖ד (one) בְּיָדִֽי׃ (in My hand).

20  וְהָי֨וּ (And will be) הָעֵצִ֜ים (the sticks) אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ (of which) תִּכְתֹּ֧ב (you write) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (on them) בְּיָדְךָ֖ (in your hand) לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ (before their eyes). 21  וְדַבֵּ֣ר (And you shall say) אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to them) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), אֲנִ֤י (I) לֹקֵ֙חַ֙ (am taking) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִבֵּ֥ין (from) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (the nations), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to which) הָֽלְכוּ־ (they have gone), שָׁ֑ם (there) וְקִבַּצְתִּ֤י (and I will gather) אֹתָם֙ (them) מִסָּבִ֔יב (from all around), וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י (and I will bring) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) אֶל־ (into) אַדְמָתָֽם׃ (their own land); 22  וְעָשִׂ֣יתִי (and I will make) אֹ֠תָם (them) לְג֨וֹי (nation) אֶחָ֤ד (one) בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ (in the land) בְּהָרֵ֣י (on the mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel); וּמֶ֧לֶךְ (and a king) אֶחָ֛ד (one) יִֽהְיֶ֥ה (will be) לְכֻלָּ֖ם (over them all); לְמֶ֑לֶךְ (as king) וְלֹ֤א (and not) יִהְיֶה (will they be) עוֹד֙ (any longer) לִשְׁנֵ֣י (as two) גוֹיִ֔ם (nations), וְלֹ֨א (and not) יֵחָ֥צוּ (will they be divided) ע֛וֹד (anymore) לִשְׁתֵּ֥י (as two) מַמְלָכ֖וֹת (kingdoms) עֽוֹד׃ (again).

23  וְלֹ֧א (And not) יִֽטַמְּא֣וּ (they will defile themselves) ע֗וֹד (anymore) בְּגִלּֽוּלֵיהֶם֙ (with their idols), וּבְשִׁקּ֣וּצֵיהֶ֔ם (and with their abominations), וּבְכֹ֖ל (and with all) פִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֑ם (their transgressions); וְהוֹשַׁעְתִּ֣י (and I will save) אֹתָ֗ם (them) מִכֹּ֤ל (from all) מוֹשְׁבֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ (their dwelling places), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) חָטְא֣וּ (they have sinned), בָהֶ֔ם (in them) וְטִהַרְתִּ֤י (and I will cleanse) אוֹתָם֙ (them) וְהָיוּ־ (and they will be) לִ֣י (My) לְעָ֔ם (people), וַאֲנִ֕י (and I) אֶהְיֶ֥ה (will be) לָהֶ֖ם (their) לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ (God). 24  וְעַבְדִּ֤י (And My servant) דָוִד֙ (David) מֶ֣לֶךְ (shall be king) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (over them) וְרוֹעֶ֥ה (and a shepherd); אֶחָ֖ד (single) יִהְיֶ֣ה (will be) לְכֻלָּ֑ם (over them all) וּבְמִשְׁפָּטַ֣י (and in My ordinances), יֵלֵ֔כוּ (they will walk) וְחֻקֹּתַ֥י (and My statutes), יִשְׁמְר֖וּ (they will keep) וְעָשׂ֥וּ (and they will do) אוֹתָֽם׃ (them).

25  וְיָשְׁב֣וּ (And they will dwell) עַל־ (in) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) נָתַ֙תִּי֙ (I have given) לְעַבְדִּ֣י (to My servant), לְיַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (to Jacob) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) יָֽשְׁבוּ־ (dwelt); בָ֖הּ (in it) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ fathers) וְיָשְׁב֣וּ (and they will dwell) עָלֶ֡יהָ (upon it), הֵ֠מָּה (they), וּבְנֵיהֶ֞ם (and their children), וּבְנֵ֤י (and the children) בְנֵיהֶם֙ (of their children) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֔ם (forever); וְדָוִ֣ד (and David shall be) עַבְדִּ֔י (My servant) נָשִׂ֥יא (the prince) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever). 26  וְכָרַתִּ֤י (And I will cut) לָהֶם֙ (with them) בְּרִ֣ית (a covenant) שָׁל֔וֹם (of peace) בְּרִ֥ית (a covenant) עוֹלָ֖ם (forever) יִהְיֶ֣ה (it will be) אוֹתָ֑ם (with them) וּנְתַתִּים֙ (and I will establish them) וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֣י (and I will multiply) אוֹתָ֔ם (them) וְנָתַתִּ֧י (and I will set) אֶת־ (-) מִקְדָּשִׁ֛י (My sanctuary) בְּתוֹכָ֖ם (in their midst) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever). 27  וְהָיָ֤ה (And will be) מִשְׁכָּנִי֙ (My dwelling place) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (with them) וְהָיִ֥יתִי (and I will be) לָהֶ֖ם (their) לֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים (God), וְהֵ֖מָּה (and they) יִֽהְיוּ־ (will be) לִ֥י (My) לְעָֽם׃ (people). 28  וְיָֽדְעוּ֙ (And will know) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations) כִּ֚י (that) אֲנִ֣י (I) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מְקַדֵּ֖שׁ (am sanctifying) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), בִּהְי֧וֹת (when comes to be) מִקְדָּשִׁ֛י (My sanctuary) בְּתוֹכָ֖ם (in their midst) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ס (forever).
