1	A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my instruction; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.	Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!	A maskil of Asaph. My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2	I will open my mouth in a parable; I will pour forth dark sayings of old,	I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,	I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3	Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have recounted to us.	things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us.	things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.
4	We will not conceal them from their children, But recount to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, And His strength and His wondrous deeds that He has done.	We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.	We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.
5	For He established a testimony in Jacob And set a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach them to their children,	He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children,	He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,
6	That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, That they may arise and recount them to their children,	that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,	so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7	That they should set their confidence in God And not forget the deeds of God, But observe His commandments,	so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;	Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
8	And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not prepare its heart And whose spirit was not faithful to God.	and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.	They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9	The sons of Ephraim were archers equipped with bows, Yet they turned back in the day of battle.	The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.	The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle;
10	They did not keep the covenant of God And refused to walk in His law;	They did not keep God’s covenant, but refused to walk according to his law.	they did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.
11	So they forgot His acts And His wondrous deeds that He had shown them.	They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them.	They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.
12	He did wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.	In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.	He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
13	He split the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand up like a heap.	He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.	He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand up like a wall.
14	Then He led them with the cloud by day And all the night with a light of fire.	In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light.	He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.
15	He was splitting the rocks in the wilderness And so gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.	He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.	He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;

17	Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.	Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.	But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18	And in their heart they put God to the test By asking for food according to their desire.	They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved.	They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
19	Then they spoke against God; They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?	They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?	They spoke against God; they said, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?
20	Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He prepare meat for His people?”	He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?”	True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”
21	Therefore Yahweh heard and was full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel,	Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel,	When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,
22	Because they did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.	because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power.	for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.
23	Yet He commanded the skies above And opened the doors of heaven;	Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven,	Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;
24	He rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them grain from heaven.	and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven.	he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.
25	Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them provision to satisfy.	Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance.	Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.
26	He led forth the east wind in the heavens And by His strength He guided the south wind.	He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind;	He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.
27	Then He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,	he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas;	He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.
28	He caused them to fall in the midst of His camp, All around His dwelling places.	he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.	He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.
29	So they ate and were very satisfied, And their desire He brought to them.	And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved.	They ate till they were gorged— he had given them what they craved.
30	Before they had satisfied their desire, While their food was in their mouths,	But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths,	But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,
31	The anger of God rose against them And killed some of their stoutest ones, And subdued the choice men of Israel.	the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel.	God’s anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
32	In spite of all this they still sinned And did not believe in His wondrous deeds.	In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.	In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.
33	So He brought their days to an end in futility And their years in sudden terror.	So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror.	So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror.
34	When He killed them, then they sought Him, And returned and sought earnestly for God;	When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly.	Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.
35	And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.	They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.	They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.
36	But they deceived Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue.	But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.	But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;
37	For their heart was not prepared to remain with Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.	Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.	their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
38	But He, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; And He abounded in turning back His anger And did not arouse all His wrath.	Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.	Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.
39	Thus He remembered that they were but flesh, A wind that goes and does not return.	He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.	He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.

41	Again and again they tested God, And pained the Holy One of Israel.	They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.	Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.
42	They did not remember His power, The day when He redeemed them from the adversary,	They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,	They did not remember his power— the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,
43	When He performed His signs in Egypt And His miracles in the field of Zoan,	when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.	the day he displayed his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan.
44	And turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, they could not drink.	He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.	He turned their river into blood; they could not drink from their streams.
45	He sent among them swarms of flies which devoured them, And frogs which destroyed them.	He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.	He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.

55	He also drove out the nations before them And apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents. 57	But turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers; They turned aside like a treacherous bow.	but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow.	Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.
58	For they provoked Him with their high places And aroused His jealousy with their graven images.	For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols.	They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.
59	God heard and was filled with wrath And greatly rejected Israel;	When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel.	When God heard them, he was furious; he rejected Israel completely.
60	So that He abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent which He caused to dwell among men,	He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind,	He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among humans.
61	And gave up His strength to captivity And His beauty into the hand of the adversary.	and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe.	He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62	He also gave over His people to the sword, And was filled with wrath at His inheritance.	He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage.	He gave his people over to the sword; he was furious with his inheritance.
63	Fire devoured His choice men, And His virgins had no wedding songs.	Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song.	Fire consumed their young men, and their young women had no wedding songs;
64	His priests fell by the sword, And His widows could not weep.	Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.	their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep.
65	Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep, As if He were a warrior overcome by wine.	Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine.	Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66	He struck His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach.	And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame.	He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.
