1	A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my instruction; stretch out your⁺ ear to the words of my mouth.	Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth!	A maskil of Asaph. My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2	I will open my mouth in a parable; I will pour forth things hidden from of old,	I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,	I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3	which we have heard and known, and our fathers have recounted to us.	things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us.	things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.
4	We will not hide them from their children, recounting to a following generation: The praises of YHWH, and His strength, and His wonders that He has done.	We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.	We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.
5	For He established a testimony in Jacob, and a law He has appointed in Israel, which He commanded to our fathers, to make them known to their sons,	He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children,	He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,
6	so that a following generation would know them—the sons to be born—to arise and recount to their sons,	that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,	so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7	that they should put their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, and keep His commandments.	so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;	Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
8	And they should not be like their fathers—a generation being stubborn and rebellious, a generation that did not set firm its heart, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.	and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.	They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9	The sons of Ephraim, handling and shooting the bow, turned back on the day of battle.	The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.	The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle;
10	They did not keep the covenant of God, and in His law they refused to walk,	They did not keep God’s covenant, but refused to walk according to his law.	they did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.
11	and they forgot His deeds, and His wonders that He had shown them.	They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them.	They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.
12	In the eyes of their fathers He did a wonder, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.	In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.	He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
13	He divided the sea and let them cross over, and the waters He made stand up like a heap.	He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap.	He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand up like a wall.
14	And He led them with the cloud by day, and all the night with a light of fire.	In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light.	He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.
15	He split open the rocks in the wilderness, and gave to drink, like the depths in abundance.	He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.	He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16	And He brought forth streams from the rock, and made waters come down like the rivers.	He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers.	he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.
17	And they added still to sin against Him by rebelling against the Most High in the desert.	Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.	But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18	And they tested God in their heart, by requesting food of their soul.	They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved.	They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.
19	And they spoke against God, saying, “Is God able to arrange a table in the wilderness?	They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?	They spoke against God; they said, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?
20	Behold, He struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and torrents overflowed; and also is He able to give bread or provide food for His people?”	He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?”	True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”
21	Therefore YHWH heard and boiled over, and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger came up against Israel,	Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel,	When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,
22	because they did not have faith in God, and they did not trust in His salvation.	because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power.	for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.
23	And He commanded the clouds above, and the doors of the heavens He opened.	Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven,	Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;
24	And He rained down on them manna to eat—and he gave to them the grain of the heavens.	and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven.	he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.
25	The bread of the mighty ones a man ate; food He sent to them in abundance.	Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance.	Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.
26	An east wind He caused to blow in the heavens, and He guided by His power the south wind.	He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind;	He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.
27	And He rained upon them food like the dust, and winged bird like the sand of the seas,	he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas;	He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.
28	and He felled them in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.	he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.	He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.
29	So they ate and were satisfied greatly, and their desires He brought to them.	And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved.	They ate till they were gorged— he had given them what they craved.
30	They were not estranged from their desire, and still their food was in their mouth.	But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths,	But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,
31	And the anger of God came upon them, and He killed the fattest of them and subdued the young men of Israel.	the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel.	God’s anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.
32	In all this, still they sinned, and they did not have faith in His wonders.	In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.	In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.
33	And He finished off their days in futility, and their years in terror.	So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror.	So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror.
34	When He slew them, they would seek Him, and they turned back and sought after God.	When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly.	Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.
35	And they remembered that God was their rock, and El-Elyon their Redeemer.	They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.	They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.
36	And they deceived Him with their mouth, and with their tongue they lied to Him.	But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.	But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;
37	And their heart was not established with Him, and they were not faithful to His covenant.	Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.	their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.
38	And He, the compassionate One, forgave the iniquity and did not destroy them; and He often restrained His anger, and He did not stir up all His wrath.	Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.	Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.
39	And He remembered that they were flesh, a breath going by that does not return.	He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.	He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.
40	How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!	How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!	How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!
41	And they turned back and tested God, and they pained the Holy One of Israel.	They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.	Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.
42	They have not remembered His hand, the day when He ransomed them from the adversary,	They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,	They did not remember his power— the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,
43	when He worked His signs in Egypt, and His wonders in the field of Zoan.	when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.	the day he displayed his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan.
44	And He turned their rivers into blood, and from their streams they could not drink.	He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.	He turned their river into blood; they could not drink from their streams.
45	He sent among them the swarm, and it consumed them, and the frog, and it destroyed them.	He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.	He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.
46	And He gave to the ravager their produce, and their labor to the locust.	He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust.	He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust.
47	He destroyed with hail their vines, and their sycamore trees with frost.	He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost.	He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48	And He gave up to the hail their cattle, and their flocks to the firebolts.	He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts.	He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.
49	He sent against them the burning of His anger—fury, and rage, and distress, a discharge of messengers of evils.	He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels.	He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility— a band of destroying angels.
50	He made level a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, and He gave over their life to the pestilence.	He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague.	He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague.
51	He even struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the first of the vigour in the tents of Ham.	He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.	He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.
52	And His people He made go forth like sheep, and He guided them like a flock in the wilderness.	Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.	But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53	And He led them to safety, and they did not dread, and the sea covered their enemies.	He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.	He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.
54	And He brought them to the border of His holiness, this mountain His right hand had acquired.	And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.	And so he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken.
55	And He drove out the nations before their face, and caused them to fall in the line of inheritance, and the tribes of Israel He settled in their tents.	He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.	He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56	And they tested and provoked El-Elyon, and His testimonies they did not keep.	Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies,	But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.
57	And they turned back and were treacherous like their fathers; they were turned like a bow of deceit.	but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow.	Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.
58	And they provoked Him to anger with their high places, and with their carved images they made Him jealous.	For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols.	They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.
59	God heard and boiled over, and exceedingly He rejected Israel;	When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel.	When God heard them, he was furious; he rejected Israel completely.
60	and He left behind the dwelling place of Shiloh, the tent He had pitched among men,	He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind,	He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among humans.
61	and He delivered His strength to captivity, and His splendor to the hand of the adversary.	and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe.	He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62	And He delivered up His people to the sword, and on His inheritance He boiled over.	He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage.	He gave his people over to the sword; he was furious with his inheritance.
63	Fire consumed His young men, and His virgins have not been praised.	Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song.	Fire consumed their young men, and their young women had no wedding songs;
64	His priests fell by the sword, and the widows could not weep.	Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.	their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep.
65	And the Lord awoke as a sleeper, as a mighty one overcome by wine.	Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine.	Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66	And He beat his adversaries back; a reproach forever He gave to them.	And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame.	He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.
67	And He rejected the tent of Joseph, and the tribe of Ephraim He would not choose.	He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,	Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;
68	And He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.	but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves.	but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.

72	And he tended them with the integrity of his heart, and by the skillfulness of his hands he guided them.	With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.	And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
