1	And He went forth from there, and came to His own country, and His disciples follow Him,	He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.	Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
2	and Sabbath having come, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing were astonished, saying, “From where [did] this One [hear] these things? And what [is] the wisdom that was given to Him, that also such mighty works are done through His hands?	And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands?	When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
3	Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?” And they were being stumbled at Him.	Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.	Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
4	And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his relatives, and in his own house”;	And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.”	Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”
5	and He was not able to do any mighty work there, except having put hands on a few sick, He healed [them];	And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.	He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
6	and He wondered because of their unbelief. And He was going around the villages, in a circle, teaching,	And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.	He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.
7	and He calls near the Twelve, and He began to send them forth two by two, and He was giving them power over the unclean spirits,	And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.	Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
8	and He commanded them that they may take nothing for the way, except a staff only—no leather pouch, no bread, no brass in the girdle,	He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts—	These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.
9	but having been shod with sandals, and you may not put on two coats.	but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.	Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.
10	And He said to them, “Whenever you may enter into a house, remain there until you may depart from there,	And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there.	Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.
11	and as many as may not receive you nor hear you, going out from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony to them; [[truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah in [the] day of judgment than for that city.”]]	And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”	And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”
12	And having gone forth they were preaching that [men] might convert,	So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent.	They went out and preached that people should repent.
13	and they were casting out many demons, and they were anointing many sick with oil, and they were healing [them].	And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.	They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
14	And King Herod heard (for His Name became public), and he said, “John the Immerser was raised out of the dead, and because of this the mighty powers are working in him.”	King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”	King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
15	Others said, “It is Elijah,” and others said, “It is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.”	But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”	Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”
16	And Herod having heard, said, “He whom I beheaded—John—this is he; he was raised out of the dead.”	But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”	But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”
17	For Herod himself, having sent forth, laid hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he married her,	For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.	For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.
18	for John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother”;	For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”	For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
19	and Herodias was having a quarrel with him, and was willing to kill him, and was not able,	And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not,	So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,
20	for Herod was fearing John, knowing him [to be] a righteous and holy man, and was keeping watch over him, and having heard him, was doing many things, and hearing him gladly.	for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.	because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.
21	And a seasonable day having come when Herod on his birthday was making a banquet to his great men, and to the chiefs of thousands, and to the first men of Galilee,	But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.	Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
22	and the daughter of that Herodias having come in, and having danced, and having pleased Herod and those dining with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you will, and I will give to you,”	For when Herodias’s daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”	When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”
23	and he swore to her, “Whatever you may ask me, I will give to you—to the half of my kingdom.”	And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”	And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
24	And she, having gone forth, said to her mother, “What will I ask for myself?” And she said, “The head of John the Immerser”;	And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.”	She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25	and having come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying, “I will that you may immediately give me the head of John the Immerser on a plate.”	And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”	At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26	And the king, made very sorrowful because of the oaths and of those reclining with him, would not put her away,	And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.	The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.
27	and immediately the king having sent a guardsman, commanded his head to be brought,	And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison	So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,
28	and he having gone, beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a plate, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother;	and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.	and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.
29	and having heard, his disciples came and took up his corpse, and laid it in the tomb.	When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.	On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
30	And the apostles are gathered together to Jesus, and they told Him all, and how many things they did, and how many things they taught,	The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.	The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.
31	and He said to them, “Come yourselves apart to a desolate place, and rest a little,” for those coming and those going were many, and not even to eat had they opportunity,	And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.	Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32	and they went away to a desolate place, in the boat, by themselves.	And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.	So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
33	And the multitudes saw them going away, and many recognized Him, and they ran there by land from all the cities, and went before them, and came together to Him,	Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.	But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.
34	and having come forth, Jesus saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion on them, that they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and He began to teach many things.	When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.	When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
35	And now the hour being advanced, His disciples having come near to Him, say, “The place is desolate, and the hour is now advanced,	And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late.	By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late.
36	let them away, that having gone away into the surrounding fields and villages, they may buy loaves for themselves, for they do not have what they may eat.”	Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”	Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37	And He answering said to them, “You give them to eat,” and they say to Him, “Having gone away, may we buy two hundred denarii worth of loaves, and give to them to eat?”	But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”	But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”
38	And He says to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see”; and having known, they say, “Five, and two fishes.”	And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”	“How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
39	And He commanded them to make all recline in companies on the green grass,	Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.	Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
40	and they sat down in squares, by hundreds, and by fifties.	So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.	So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
41	And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the sky, He blessed, and broke the loaves, and was giving [them] to His disciples, that they may set [them] before them, and the two fishes He divided to all,	And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all.	Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
42	and they all ate, and were filled,	And they all ate and were satisfied.	They all ate and were satisfied,
43	and they took up of broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full, and of the fishes,	And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish.	and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
44	and those eating of the loaves were about five thousand men.	And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.	The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
45	And immediately He constrained His disciples to go into the boat, and to go before [Him] to the other side, to Bethsaida, until He may let the multitude away,	Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.	Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
46	and having taken leave of them, He went away to the mountain to pray.	And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.	After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
47	And evening having come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and He alone on the land;	And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.	Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.
48	and He saw them harassed in the rowing, for the wind was against them, and about the fourth watch of the night He comes to them walking on the sea, and wished to pass by them.	And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them,	He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,
49	And they having seen Him walking on the sea, thought [it] to be an apparition, and cried out,	but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out,	but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,
50	for they all saw Him, and were troubled, and immediately He spoke with them, and says to them, “Take courage! I AM; do not be afraid.”	for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”	because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
51	And He went up to them into the boat, and the wind stilled, and greatly out of measure they were amazed in themselves, and were wondering,	And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,	Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,
52	for they did not understand concerning the loaves, for their heart has been hard.	for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.	for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
53	And having passed over, they came on the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore,	When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore.	When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.
54	and they having come forth out of the boat, immediately having recognized Him,	And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him	As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.
55	they ran around through all that surrounding region, and they began to carry around on the pallets those being ill, where they were hearing that He is,	and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was.	They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
56	and wherever He was going, to villages, or cities, or fields, in the marketplaces they were laying the ailing, and were calling on Him, that they may touch if it were but the fringe of His garment, and as many as were touching Him were saved.	And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.	And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
