1 And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gadarenes, They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 and He having come forth out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 who had his dwelling in the tombs, and not even with chains was anyone able to bind him, He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 because that many times he had been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been pulled in pieces by him, and the shackles broken in pieces, and none was able to tame him, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 and always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 And having seen Jesus from afar, he ran and prostrated to Him, And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 and having called with a loud voice, he said, “What [regards] me and You, Jesus, Son of God the Most High? I adjure You by God, may You not afflict me!” And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 For He said to him, “Come forth, unclean spirit, out of the man!” For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 And He was questioning him, “What [is] your name?” And he answered, saying, “Legion [is] my name, because we are many”; And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 and he was calling on Him much, that He may not send them out of the region. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 And there was there, near the mountains, a great herd of pigs feeding, Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 and all the demons called on Him, saying, “Send us to the pigs, that into them we may enter”; and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 and immediately Jesus gave them leave, and having come forth, the unclean spirits entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep place to the sea—and they were about two thousand—and they were choked in the sea. So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 And those feeding the pigs fled, and told in the city, and in the fields, and they came forth to see what it is that has been done; The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 and they come to Jesus, and see the demoniac, sitting, and clothed, and right-minded—him having had the legion—and they were afraid; And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 and those having seen [it], declared to them how it had come to pass to the demoniac, and about the pigs; And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 and they began to call on Him to go away from their borders. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 And He having gone into the boat, the demoniac was calling on Him that he may be with Him, As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 and Jesus did not permit him, but says to him, “Go away to your house, to your own [friends], and tell them how the LORD did great things to you, and dealt kindly with you”; And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 and he went away, and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how Jesus did great things to him, and all were wondering. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
21 And Jesus having passed over in the boat again to the other side, there was gathered a great multitude to Him, and He was near the sea, And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
22 and behold, there comes one of the chiefs of the synagogue, by name Jairus, and having seen Him, he falls at His feet, Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
23 and he was calling on Him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the last extremity—that having come, You may lay on her [Your] hands, so that she may be saved, and she will live”; and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
24 and He went away with him. And there was following Him a great multitude, and they were thronging Him, And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 and a certain woman, being with a flow of blood [for] twelve years, And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 and having suffered many things under many physicians, and having spent all that she had, and having profited nothing, but rather having come to the worse, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 having heard about Jesus, having come in the multitude behind, she touched His garment, She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 for she said, “If I may even touch His garments, I will be saved”; For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 and immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she knew in the body that she has been healed of the plague. And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 And immediately Jesus having known in Himself that power had gone forth out of Him, having turned in the multitude, said, “Who touched My garments?” And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me!” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ “
32 And He was looking around to see her who did this, And he looked around to see who had done it. But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 and the woman, having been afraid, and trembling, knowing what was done on her, came, and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth, But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 and He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go away in peace, and be whole from your plague.” And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
35 As He is yet speaking, there come from the chief of the synagogue’s [house, certain], saying, “Your daughter died, why do you still harass the Teacher?” While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 And Jesus immediately, having heard the word that is spoken, says to the chief of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 And He did not permit anyone to follow with Him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James; And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 and He comes into the house of the chief of the synagogue, and sees a tumult, much weeping and wailing; They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
39 and having gone in He says to them, “Why do you make a tumult, and weep? The child did not die, but sleeps”; And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
40 and they were laughing at Him. And He, having put all forth, takes the father of the child, and the mother, and those with Him, and goes in where the child is lying, And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 and having taken the hand of the child, He says to her, “Talitha cumi”; which is, being interpreted, “Girl (I say to you), arise.” Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 And immediately the girl arose, and was walking, for she was twelve years [old]; and they were amazed with a great amazement, And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 and He charged them much, that no one may know this thing, and He said that there be given to her to eat. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
