10 Jesus answered her, |If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, 'Give me some water to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.| Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
11 |Sir,| the woman said to him, |you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water? The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
12 Surely you're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.| Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus replied, |Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again. Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
14 But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.| but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him, |Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.| The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He said to her, |Go call your husband and come back here.| Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 The woman replied, |I have no husband.| Jesus said to her, |Right you are when you said, 'I have no husband,' The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.
18 for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!| for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 The woman said to him, |Sir, I see that you are a prophet. The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.| Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 Jesus said to her, |Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22 You people worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23 But a time is coming--and now is here--when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24 God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.| God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said to him, |I know that Messiah is coming| (the one called Christ); |whenever he comes, he will tell us everything.| The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Jesus said to her, |I, the one speaking to you, am he.| Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
27 Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, |What do you want?| or |Why are you speaking with her?| Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people, So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
29 |Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can't be the Messiah, can he?| “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
30 So they left the town and began coming to him. They went out of the town and were coming to him. They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, |Rabbi, eat something.| Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”

33 So the disciples began to say to one another, |No one brought him anything to eat, did they?| So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34 Jesus said to them, |My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work. Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
35 Don't you say, 'There are four more months and then comes the harvest?' I tell you, look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest! Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
36 The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
37 For in this instance the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.' For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
38 I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.| I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
39 Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, |He told me everything I ever did.| Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”

48 So Jesus said to him, |Unless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!| So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49 |Sir,| the official said to him, |come down before my child dies.| The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 Jesus told him, |Go home; your son will live.| The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home. Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
51 While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him that his son was going to live. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
52 So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and they told him, |Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon the fever left him.| So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53 Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, |Your son will live,| and he himself believed along with his entire household. The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.
54 Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee. This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
