3	and returned into Galilee.	he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.	So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
4	but being obliged to pass through Samaria,	And he had to pass through Samaria.	Now he had to go through Samaria.
5	he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the piece of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 8	for his disciples were gone away to the city to buy provisions.	(For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.)	(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
9	but the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you who are a Jew, ask drink of me, who am a Samaritan? (for the Jews have no friendly intercourse with the Samaritans.)	The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)	The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10	Jesus answered her, if you knew the dispensation of God, and who it is that says to you, give me to drink; you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water.	Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”	Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
11	sir, said the woman, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then can you get that living water?	The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?	“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
12	are you wiser than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, as well as his children, and cattle?	Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”	Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13	Jesus answered her, they that drink of this water, will be thirsty again:	Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,	Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
14	but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst: for the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a fountain springing up to everlasting life.	but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”	but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15	sir, replied the woman, give me this water, that I may never be adry, nor come hither to draw more.	The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”	The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16	go, call your husband, said Jesus, and come again.	Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”	He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17	the woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus replied, you were in the right to say you have no husband:	The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;	“I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.
18	for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have, is not your husband: in that you said true.	for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”	The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19	the woman said to him, sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.	The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.	“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
20	our fathers worshipped upon this mountain; and you say, that Jerusalem is the place where we ought to perform our worship.	Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”	Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21	Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, the time is coming when it shall be neither on this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem that ye shall worship the father.	Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.	“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22	ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is from the Jews.	You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.	You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23	but the time is coming, nay, is very nigh, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for they are the worshippers which he requires.	But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.	Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24	God is a spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.	God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”	God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25	then said the woman to him, I know that the Messias (that is to say the Christ) is to come, and when he is come, he will tell us all things.	The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”	The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26	Jesus said to her, I that am talking with you am he.	Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”	Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
27	Upon this his disciples came, and were surpriz'd at his conversing with the woman: yet none of them said, what did you ask her? or, why do you talk with her?	Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”	Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28	the woman then left her water-pot, and went away into the city, and said to the people, come,	So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,	Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
29	see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ?	“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”	“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
30	so they went out of the city, and came to him.	They went out of the town and were coming to him.	They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31	In the mean while his disciples invited him, saying, pray master, eat.	Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”	Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32	but he answered them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of:	But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”	But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
33	upon which the disciples said one to another, hath any man brought him any thing to eat?	So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”	Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34	Jesus said to them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.	Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.	“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
35	is it not a common saying, "t'other four months, and then comes harvest?" lift up your eyes now, I say, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.	Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.	Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
36	he that reapeth, receiveth wages, by gathering fruit unto life eternal: that the sower, and the reaper, may both rejoice together.	Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.	Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
37	upon this occasion, that saying is verified, "one soweth, and another reapeth."	For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’	Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
38	I sent you to reap where you bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and you are entred into their labours.	I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”	I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
39	Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, for that testimony which the woman gave him, "he told me all that ever I did."	Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”	Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
40	so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days. 41	and many more believed, for having heard him speak himself: and said to the woman,	And many more believed because of his word.	And because of his words many more became believers.
42	now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.	They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”	They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
43	Two days after, he departed thence, and went into Galilee:	After the two days he departed for Galilee.	After the two days he left for Galilee.
44	(tho' Jesus himself had declared, that a prophet is not honoured in his own country.)	(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)	(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
45	when he was come into Galilee, he was well received by the Galileans, who had seen all that he did at Jerusalem during the feast: for they likewise went to the feast.	So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.	When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.
46	Jesus went therefore a second time to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine, now a certain nobleman was there, whose son was sick at Capernaum.	So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill.	Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
47	who having heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went there to desire him to come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.	When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.	When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48	but Jesus said to him, except you see signs and miracles, you will not believe.	So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”	“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49	the nobleman said to him, sir, pray come down before my child be dead.	The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”	The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50	go thy way, said Jesus: thy son is well, and the man believed what Jesus had said to him, and went his way.	Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.	“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
51	as he was upon the road, his servants met him, and acquainted him, that his son was well.	As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.	While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
52	then he enquired of them the hour when he began to mend: and they answered, yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.	So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”	When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53	so the father knew that it was at the very same hour, at which Jesus said to him, thy son is well, and he himself believed, and all his family.	The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.	Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.
54	Jesus did this second miracle when he return'd from Judea to Galilee.	This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.	This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
