4	He had to go through Samaritan territory.	And he had to pass through Samaria.	Now he had to go through Samaria.
5	Then he came to a Samaritan city, called Sychar, near the field which Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 9	The Samaritan woman said to him, How is it? You are a Jew, and yet you ask me for a drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no social intercourse with Samaritans.	The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)	The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10	Jesus answered and said to her, If you only knew the gift of God, and who is the man who said to you, Give me a drink; you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.	Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”	Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
11	The woman said to him, My lord, you have no leather bucket, and no deep well; where do you get the living water?	The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?	“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
12	Why, are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well, and he himself drank from it, and his sons and his sheep?	Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”	Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13	Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;	Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,	Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
14	But whoever drinks of the water which I give him, shall never thirst; but the same water which I give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to life everlasting.	but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”	but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15	The woman said to him, My lord, give me of this water, so that I may not thirst again, and need not come and draw from here.	The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”	The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16	Jesus said to her, Go and call your husband, and come here.	Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”	He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17	She said to him, I have no husband; Jesus said to her, You said well, I have no husband;	The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;	“I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.
18	For you have had five husbands; and the one you now have is not your husband; what you said is true.	for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”	The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19	Then the woman said to him, My lord, I see that you are a prophet.	The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.	“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
20	Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain; and you say the place where men must worship is in Jerusalem.	Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”	Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21	Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the time is coming, when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem they will worship the Father.	Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.	“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22	You worship what you do not know; but we worship what we do know; for salvation is from the Jews.	You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.	You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23	But the time is coming, and it is here, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father also desires worshippers such as these.	But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.	Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24	For God is Spirit; and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.	God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”	God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25	The woman said to him, I know that the Messiah (Christ) is coming; when he is come, he will teach us everything.	The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”	The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26	Jesus said to her, I am he, who is speaking to you.	Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”	Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
27	While he was talking, his disciples came, and they were surprised that he was talking with a married woman; but no one said to him, What do you want? or, What are you talking with her?	Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”	Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28	The woman then left her water jar, and went to the city and said to the men,	So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,	Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
29	Come and see a man who told me everything which I have done; why, is he the Christ?	“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”	“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?”
30	And the men went out of the city, and came to him.	They went out of the town and were coming to him.	They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31	During the interval his disciples begged him, saying, Teacher, eat.	Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”	Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32	But he said to them, I have food to eat, of which you do not know.	But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”	But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
33	The disciples said among themselves, Why, did any man bring him something to eat?	So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”	Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34	Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work.	Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.	“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
35	Do you not say that after four months comes the harvest? behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and look at the fields, which have turned white and have long been ready for the harvest.	Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.	Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
36	And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruits to life everlasting; so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.	Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.	Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
37	For in this case the saying is true, One sows and another reaps.	For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’	Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
38	I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; for others labored, and you have entered into their labor.	I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”	I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
39	A great many Samaritans of that city believed in him, because of the word of that woman, who testified, He told me everything which I have done.	Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”	Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
40	So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them; and he stayed with them two days. 41	And a great many believed in him because of his word;	And many more believed because of his word.	And because of his words many more became believers.

They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”	They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
43	Two days later, Jesus departed thence and went to Galilee.	After the two days he departed for Galilee.	After the two days he left for Galilee.
44	For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet is not honored in his own city.	(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)	(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
45	When he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, for they had seen all the wonders he did at Jerusalem during the feast; for they also had come to the feast.	So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.	When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, for they also had been there.
46	Then Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was at Capernaum a servant of a king, whose son was sick.	So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill.	Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
47	This man heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee; so he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son; for he was near death.	When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.	When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48	Jesus said to him, Unless you see miracles and wonders, you will not believe.	So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”	“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49	The king’s servant said to him, My Lord, come down before the boy is dead.	The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”	The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50	Jesus said to him, Go, your son is healed. And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him and went away.	Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.	“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
51	And as he was going down, his servants met him and brought him good news, saying, Your son is healed.	As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.	While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
52	And he asked them, At what time was he healed? They said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.	So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”	When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53	And his father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus told him, Your son is healed; so he himself believed and his whole household.	The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.	Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.
54	This is again the second miracle which Jesus did, after he came from Judaea to Galilee.	This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.	This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
