ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι Κύριε ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ | So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” | So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” |
Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Αὕτη ἡ ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ’ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δι’ αὐτῆς | But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” | When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” |
Ἠγάπα δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον | Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. | Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. |

Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Ῥαββί νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ | The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” | “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?” |
Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὐχὶ δώδεκα ὧραί εἰσιν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ οὐ προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει | Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. |
ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ | But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” | It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.” |
Ταῦτα εἶπεν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν | After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” | After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” |
Εἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται | The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” | His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” |
εἰρήκει δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει | Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. | Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. |
Τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν | Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, | So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, |
καὶ χαίρω δι’ ὑμᾶς ἵνα πιστεύσητε ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν | and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” | and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” |
Εἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ | So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” | Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” |
Ἐλθὼν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εὗρεν αὐτὸν τέσσαρας ἤδη ἡμέρας ἔχοντα ἐν τῷ μνημείῳ | Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. | On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. |
ἦν δὲ ‹ἡ› Βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε | Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, | Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, |
πολλοὶ δὲ ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐληλύθεισαν πρὸς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ Μαριὰμ ἵνα παραμυθήσωνται αὐτὰς περὶ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ | and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. | and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. |
ἡ οὖν Μάρθα ὡς ἤκουσεν ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἔρχεται ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ Μαριὰμ δὲ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἐκαθέζετο | So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. | When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. |

[ἀλλὰ] καὶ νῦν οἶδα ὅτι ὅσα ἂν αἰτήσῃ τὸν Θεὸν δώσει σοι ὁ Θεός | But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” | But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” |
