1 וַ֭יַּעַן אֱלִיפַ֥ז הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 הֶֽחָכָ֗ם יַעֲנֶ֥ה דַֽעַת־ ר֑וּחַ וִֽימַלֵּ֖א קָדִ֣ים בִּטְנֽוֹ׃ “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? “Would a wise person answer with empty notions or fill their belly with the hot east wind?
3 הוֹכֵ֣חַ בְּ֭דָבָר לֹ֣א יִסְכּ֑וֹן וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים לֹא־ יוֹעִ֥יל בָּֽם׃ Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good? Would they argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value?
4 אַף־ אַ֭תָּה תָּפֵ֣ר יִרְאָ֑ה וְתִגְרַ֥ע שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה לִפְנֵי־ אֵֽל׃ But you are doing away with the fear of God and hindering meditation before God. But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God.
5 כִּ֤י יְאַלֵּ֣ף עֲוֺנְךָ֣ פִ֑יךָ וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר לְשׁ֣וֹן עֲרוּמִֽים׃ For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty.
6 יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־ אָ֑נִי וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־ בָֽךְ׃ Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you. Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you.
7 הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן אָ֭דָם תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃ “Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills? “Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?
8 הַבְס֣וֹד אֱל֣וֹהַ תִּשְׁמָ֑ע וְתִגְרַ֖ע אֵלֶ֣יךָ חָכְמָֽה׃ Have you listened in the council of God? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? Do you listen in on God’s council? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?
9 מַה־ יָּ֭דַעְתָּ וְלֹ֣א נֵדָ֑ע תָּ֝בִ֗ין וְֽלֹא־ עִמָּ֥נוּ הֽוּא׃ What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have?
10 גַּם־ שָׂ֣ב גַּם־ יָשִׁ֣ישׁ בָּ֑נוּ כַּבִּ֖יר מֵאָבִ֣יךָ יָמִֽים׃ Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father. The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father.
11 הַמְעַ֣ט מִ֭מְּךָ תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת אֵ֑ל וְ֝דָבָ֗ר לָאַ֥ט עִמָּֽךְ׃ Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you? Are God’s consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you?
12 מַה־ יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ לִבֶּ֑ךָ וּֽמַה־ יִּרְזְמ֥וּן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash, Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,
13 כִּֽי־ תָשִׁ֣יב אֶל־ אֵ֣ל רוּחֶ֑ךָ וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ מִפִּ֣יךָ מִלִּֽין׃ that you turn your spirit against God and bring such words out of your mouth? so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth?
14 מָֽה־ אֱנ֥וֹשׁ כִּֽי־ יִזְכֶּ֑ה וְכִֽי־ יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃ What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous? “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?
15 הֵ֣ן [בקדשו] (בִּ֭קְדֹשָׁיו) לֹ֣א יַאֲמִ֑ין וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם לֹא־ זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃ Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight; If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,
16 אַ֭ף כִּֽי־ נִתְעָ֥ב וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח אִישׁ־ שֹׁתֶ֖ה כַמַּ֣יִם עַוְלָֽה׃ how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water! how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water!
17 אֲחַוְךָ֥ שְֽׁמַֽע־ לִ֑י וְזֶֽה־ חָ֝זִ֗יתִי וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃ “I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare “Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen,
18 אֲשֶׁר־ חֲכָמִ֥ים יַגִּ֑ידוּ וְלֹ֥א כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃ (what wise men have told, without hiding it from their fathers, what the wise have declared, hiding nothing received from their ancestors
19 לָהֶ֣ם לְ֭בַדָּם נִתְּנָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ וְלֹא־ עָ֖בַר זָ֣ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them). (to whom alone the land was given when no foreigners moved among them):
20 כָּל־ יְמֵ֣י רָ֭שָׁע ה֣וּא מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל וּמִסְפַּ֥ר שָׁ֝נִ֗ים לֶעָרִֽיץ׃ The wicked man writhes in pain all his days, through all the years that are laid up for the ruthless. All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.
21 קוֹל־ פְּחָדִ֥ים בְּאָזְנָ֑יו בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם שׁוֹדֵ֥ד יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃ Dreadful sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him. Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him.
22 לֹא־ יַאֲמִ֣ין שׁ֭וּב מִנִּי־ חֹ֑שֶׁךְ [וצפו] (וְצָפ֖וּי) ה֣וּא אֱלֵי־ חָֽרֶב׃ He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword. He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness; he is marked for the sword.
23 נֹ֘דֵ֤ד ה֣וּא לַלֶּ֣חֶם אַיֵּ֑ה יָדַ֓ע ׀ כִּֽי־ נָכ֖וֹן בְּיָד֣וֹ יֽוֹם־ חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand; He wanders about for food like a vulture; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24 יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ צַ֣ר וּמְצוּקָ֑ה תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ ׀ עָתִ֬יד לַכִּידֽוֹר׃ distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle. Distress and anguish fill him with terror; troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,
25 כִּֽי־ נָטָ֣ה אֶל־ אֵ֣ל יָד֑וֹ וְאֶל־ שַׁ֝דַּ֗י יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃ Because he has stretched out his hand against God and defies the Almighty, because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty,
26 יָר֣וּץ אֵלָ֣יו בְּצַוָּ֑אר בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י גַּבֵּ֥י מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃ running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield; defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.
27 כִּֽי־ כִסָּ֣ה פָנָ֣יו בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ פִּימָ֣ה עֲלֵי־ כָֽסֶל׃ because he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat upon his waist “Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,
28 וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן ׀ עָ֘רִ֤ים נִכְחָד֗וֹת בָּ֭תִּים לֹא־ יֵ֣שְׁבוּ לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ לְגַלִּֽים׃ and has lived in desolate cities, in houses that none should inhabit, which were ready to become heaps of ruins; he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble.
29 לֹֽא־ יֶ֭עְשַׁר וְלֹא־ יָק֣וּם חֵיל֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־ יִטֶּ֖ה לָאָ֣רֶץ מִנְלָֽם׃ he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the earth; He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land.
30 לֹֽא־ יָס֨וּר ׀ מִנִּי־ חֹ֗שֶׁךְ יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת וְ֝יָס֗וּר בְּר֣וּחַ פִּֽיו׃ he will not depart from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and by the breath of his mouth he will depart. He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
31 אַל־ יַאֲמֵ֣ן [בשו] (בַּשָּׁ֣יו) נִתְעָ֑ה כִּי־ שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃ Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment. Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return.
32 בְּֽלֹא־ י֭וֹמוֹ תִּמָּלֵ֑א וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רַעֲנָֽנָה׃ It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green. Before his time he will wither, and his branches will not flourish.
33 יַחְמֹ֣ס כַּגֶּ֣פֶן בִּסְר֑וֹ וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת נִצָּתֽוֹ׃ He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine, and cast off his blossom like the olive tree. He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.
34 כִּֽי־ עֲדַ֣ת חָנֵ֣ף גַּלְמ֑וּד וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ אָכְלָ֥ה אָֽהֳלֵי־ שֹֽׁחַד׃ For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery. For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.
35 הָרֹ֣ה עָ֭מָל וְיָ֣לֹד אָ֑וֶן וּ֝בִטְנָ֗ם תָּכִ֥ין מִרְמָֽה׃ ס They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.” They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.”
