1 Πᾶς γὰρ ἀρχιερεὺς ἐξ ἀνθρώπων λαμβανόμενος ὑπὲρ ἀνθρώπων καθίσταται τὰ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν ἵνα προσφέρῃ δῶρά τε καὶ θυσίας ὑπὲρ ἁμαρτιῶν For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
2 μετριοπαθεῖν δυνάμενος τοῖς ἀγνοοῦσιν καὶ πλανωμένοις ἐπεὶ καὶ αὐτὸς περίκειται ἀσθένειαν He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.
3 καὶ δι’ αὐτὴν ὀφείλει καθὼς περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ οὕτως καὶ περὶ αὑτοῦ* προσφέρειν περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.
4 Καὶ οὐχ ἑαυτῷ τις λαμβάνει τὴν τιμήν ἀλλὰ καλούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ καθώσπερ καὶ Ἀαρών And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.
5 Οὕτως καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς οὐχ ἑαυτὸν ἐδόξασεν γενηθῆναι ἀρχιερέα ἀλλ’ ὁ λαλήσας πρὸς αὐτόν Υἱός μου εἶ σύ ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”
6 Καθὼς καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ λέγει Σὺ ἱερεὺς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
7 Ὃς ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ δεήσεις τε καὶ ἱκετηρίας πρὸς τὸν δυνάμενον σῴζειν αὐτὸν ἐκ θανάτου μετὰ κραυγῆς ἰσχυρᾶς καὶ δακρύων προσενέγκας καὶ εἰσακουσθεὶς ἀπὸ τῆς εὐλαβείας In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
8 καίπερ ὢν Υἱός ἔμαθεν ἀφ’ ὧν ἔπαθεν τὴν ὑπακοήν Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered
9 καὶ τελειωθεὶς ἐγένετο πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ αἴτιος σωτηρίας αἰωνίου And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him
10 προσαγορευθεὶς ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀρχιερεὺς κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
11 Περὶ οὗ πολὺς ἡμῖν ὁ λόγος καὶ δυσερμήνευτος λέγειν ἐπεὶ νωθροὶ γεγόνατε ταῖς ἀκοαῖς About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.
12 καὶ γὰρ ὀφείλοντες εἶναι διδάσκαλοι διὰ τὸν χρόνον πάλιν χρείαν ἔχετε τοῦ διδάσκειν ὑμᾶς τινα τὰ στοιχεῖα τῆς ἀρχῆς τῶν λογίων τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ γεγόνατε χρείαν ἔχοντες γάλακτος [καὶ] οὐ στερεᾶς τροφῆς For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
13 πᾶς γὰρ ὁ μετέχων γάλακτος ἄπειρος λόγου δικαιοσύνης νήπιος γάρ ἐστιν for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14 τελείων δέ ἐστιν ἡ στερεὰ τροφή τῶν διὰ τὴν ἕξιν τὰ αἰσθητήρια γεγυμνασμένα ἐχόντων πρὸς διάκρισιν καλοῦ τε καὶ κακοῦ But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
